You would think in this day and age when even the most "civilised" governments censor thought and expression, that one ould be able to express anything freely at a place like this ( This forum) ...but even the most "open minded" locations are censored.

Q: Is it fair that someone edits anothers expression just because they deem it unsuitable?

I suppose it depends. One persons freedom will invariably curb another persons freedom. I am not a fan of censorship at all, but the problem is that most people don't realize (or don't care to realize) that freedom comes with risk. It requires personal sacrifice, personal accountability, common sense, and most importantly understanding. Sadly many people have little or none of these. They want things their way and they never want to be offended. It seems that people have lost the ability to shut off their computers and their televisions, so now when something offensive comes up they are apparently somehow forced to look at it It's like people don't realize that they can die just walking across the street. IF it happens it gets made up to be this huge societal menace that must be eraticated. Like our country didn't survive for two hundered years with people just looking both ways before crossing the road. People are so touchy and easily offended these days. It seems that if you're not PC you're some kind of antichrist. It's really f*cking weak if you ask me. Every thinks that the world owes them something, and so the American way has become to whine and bitch and moan and sue everyone untill you get your way... whether you're right or not.

But as far as this board is concerned Malcom, as far as I know, wants to keep this a family friendly site. A lot of kids who are just getting into spinning have their parents look at this site to understand what it is all about. And in that vein I don't think Malcom or the mods want the first things you see when you visit this site to be a string of profanity or links to porn sites or something. I have had a couple of my posts pulled for contentent myself. But I realize that this is not my web site. It is Malcom's. I don't pay for the band width, I don't make the dicisions of how this site should run. And being as how Malcom is so very nice to let me (and all the rest of us) use it for free I try to respect this and keep my posts at least PG-13 (though I do slip sometimes).

If you have a problem with one of the mods editing your post I'm shure they will be happy to discuss it like rational adults.

cheers

I agree with censorship of any pornographic material, and also agree with censoring profanity. I guess then that moderators censoring personal attacks is also acceptable...
I was not really referring to anything specific, just questioning the moderation...it is just like the government sometimes, one wonders why these people are in power. At least here I suppose those in power are not fascists, just normal people with good hearts, tryin to keep it all clean. Keep it up!

How about because this isn't a place of the people, for the people, and by the people, but rather a place of the spinners, for the spinners, and by Malcolm?

This isn't a government, it's MalcolmWorld. And Malcolm, being the amazing dude that he is, is kind enough to allow us to play here.

I haven't seen the moderators do much censorship (other than C@ntus rewriting a post of mine so that I called myself crazy...)

I know exactly what you are speaking about Fire_Emanator.... and I have no doubt as to whether I did the right thing or not. Do you honestly believe that what I edited in your post was nothing other than a personal attack that would have caused hurt and resulted in unnecessary tension?? Feel free to discuss this with me. EDIT: I have just been made aware that the situation actually developed beyond my inital input.... You should have PM'd the person in question, rather than attack like that on an open forum. No hard feelings from me though.

Please note that the only reason I am discussing this with F_E here on this thread is because I want people to understand that the thread was started as a reaction to something, not just unprovoked "concern".

The other mods and myself generally prefer NOT to censor things. This I can guarantee. But, if something of an innappropriate nature has been posted, then we have to

1. Keep the peace
2. Ensure no one feels victimised as best we can

Although we mods all have our personalities and opinions, I feel that we generally do a great job of moderation, particularly when we put personal feelings/bias aside all for the good of the Home of Poi community.

This is privet property, owned by Malcolm. Look at it this way, this is his country, he is king. What he says goes. We do not have the right to post here, he can deleate posts and edit posts at his whim.

If he intrusts mods to do the job so that he doesnt have to be on here 24-7 then thats his choice as king.

If I could interject a little of my philospohy about the site here.

What I want HoP to be, at all times, 24-7, for the rest of time itself, is friendly, open and inviting and safe.

Safe means if someone puts instructions for making a home-made bomb, it will get deleted.

What I will do in that situation, is copy the post, and email it to the person who posted it. I would then say that the post was not suitable for HoP, but you are welcome to email it to others or do whatever you like without.

Your freedom of speech would not be affected, merely the medium it was originally put on.

I love this board, and can truly say it seems to be the onyl one I've ever seen where people are, on average, nice and pleasant to each other.

It would be nice to keep it this way.
