start with glowsticks and strings...use the 6" ones...and follow the directions on the site about the length of the strings...You dont want it too long, cuz then you need too much room and you need a lot more force/speed in order to get it moving. You dont want it too short cuz then its just friggin hard...

Honestly bud I started with glow sticks but I would recomend if you dont want to spend much money shoe strings and tennis balls. But HOP does have a lovly starter set for sale in the store. I would recomend getting comfertable with moves then gradgamicate (I went to public schools) to fire. If you just grab a can of gas and some poi with no one to teach you or no knowlege of moves then your just a guy(gal) with a ball of fire at the end of some chain.

id reccomend somehting like a hacky sack (or footsack, depending where in the globle youre from) on the end of some string to start off with. its got weight, so its easy to spin, its not too heavy, so its easier to spin, and it doesnt hurt much when you hit yourself....

what you can do is make one.... get some old socks and fill em up with rice to the size or a little smaller than a tennis ball, tie them up, and attach some string, or a shoelace. The standard length is from the base of your finger to the base of your armpit, including the wik (or socks in your case)..

then OFF YOU GO, on the road to happiness!

I got a pair of light fire poi and started swinging them (not lit, of course).

However, I do recommend the tennis ball and nylon rope tactic. But if you are male, I highly recommend that you invest in a cup.

You WILL bang the pois together and they WILL hit you in the nads. This isn't a "might" thing. Nobody learns without having it happen at least once. So get a cup.

I built myself some scary ass double ended chains with tennis balls heads when I first started. Since then I have managed to amass another 3 pairs.

Electroglo poi are as close as I would ever go to glowsticks....

I started using non lit fire poi to practice with - figured if that's what I was going to eventually light up with, I should start practicing with them.

I do have a set of tennis ball ones, but don't really use them. They sit, largely neglected.

Which is easiest? I think that depends on the individual.

Take a set of socks. Fill the toe with beans (lima, pinto, whatever) to create a ball. Tie the sock in a knot. Lace a shoelace through the knot in the sock and tie it off so it doesn't slip through. Make a knot or loop in the other end of the shoestring for a handle. There you go. Instant, cheap and more importantly painless poi.

Personally I think you should learn poi first. It takes a bit more co-ordination between the hands than single staff, and it helps when you want to venture into double staff.
I learned poi first and found it a bit easy to pick up single staff. My friend started on staff and has deemd poi impossible.
Or, try one for a week, then the other (use a broom handle for the staff..but without the business end) and see which you like best and work from there.
Good luck!

I started with flags, actually. I had no intention of becoming a fire spinner at the time. When someone saw me doing that at a rave and handed me glowsticks on strings, I realized that yes, I could spin poi. I already had the corkscrew, two-beat weave, and windmill.

Flags are great to learn with because they don't nearly hurt as much when you smack yourself.

my flags are strange... they don't have a swivel so I can't do anything other than a lot of turns, the half weave (2 beat weave), butterfly to BTH butterfly, and corkscrew's.

I find my flags are harder to work with... but that's me and I'm strange

Soft toys on strings are fun! and they don't hurt at all!

I found staff easier to learn 'cause you can slow it right down and even stop when you need to without being hit in the.... everywhere like with poi... 'cause poi can't be slowed down that much, and it tangles and hits ya more (speaking from expirience ) But then it's easier to get poi going and it's easier to make it look "good" and fast (if that's what you want to achieve) than staff....

I love them both

Some people swear by staff and some by poi
I think it's personal preferance

So grab a pair of socks and tennis balls/soft toys/glowsticks/whatever and a broomstick and just go for it! See which one feels best for you.

funny moonpixie, even if i don't hit myself more with staff qunatitativly it sure does more damage! i still have a bruise from three moneth ago, altho it's almost gone (was once a cut too). and i have a bruise from three weeks ago too that's still noticeable. and keep in mind taht most of my staffs now have tennis balls on teh end ans are thus very hard to injure urself with. welllllll...... at least harder.

why not learn staff and poi both at the same time?

they is fairly different, but transferable.
