Well I guess I'm new... wouldn't really be posted this if i wasn't
. I've been lingering a bit but finally decided it was time to join in the fun. My name is Elisabeth, I'm 18 years old and from Illinois, USA. I am also very very new to poi. I've done colorguard for 6 years now, but I graduate this year so I started looking for something to fill that space up. Which is how I came into beginning poi. Since I've been spinning six foot flag poles for six years, I would love to get into some staff work. But as of yet, I have only just started with the swinging poi. I guess that's all for now but feel free to ask me some questions.

Which bit of Illinois are you from? And what show did you do this year? Have you ever used the butterfly flags? How about those 10ft flags? Those are fun...Colorguard definitely rocks! Oooh! How about pinwheel flags?

I'm from the mid-western part of Illinois. And yes I am a bandie! I play and do colorguard (just not both for marching season)
Unfortunitly, our funding is so bad. So we didn't have a whole lotta types of equipment. we had our regular flags, which were 6 foot, and we had the old ones, which were fiberglass, and the new ones which were aluminum. I love the weight of the fiberglass ones but I can get so much more height and rotations in my tosses with the aluminum ones. The other problem with fiberglass... i once had the stopper pop off of my pole I was using and the bottom had shattered. Fiberglass splinters all across my palm, at the beginning of the show. Ouchy... but it's a marching season wound I'll always carry with me... ahh the memories. We also had two types of flags for them, curved ones (less air drag) and rectangular ones (more air drag). we also had 12 foot long ribbons, which were loads of fun. and these really weird hoops with gold streamer things on them. Really odd to use, but they looked cool on the field. We also did a lot of dance in our shows. The only time I really got to use other equipment was at camps and friends from other schools that are in colorguard as well. I would have loved to have sabres and rifles but we just didn't have the funding. Another odd thing about our shows: we had a different one for every game. Our band director's pyscho, but who's isn't. so we usually had 6 new shows and 3 parades each season. So we got good at the art of power learning. Sometimes we only had one week to learn a new show, and we only had practice after school, but it was still fun. And I got to make a lot of the rountiens which I really loved. And now I'm babbling... hehe, ok, I'll go now for a bit

Well... I am really partial to blue myself. But my best friend's favorite is pink, so I find myself surrounded by it quite often. It is a rather lovely color though
I'm sorry! I forgot it's probably only an American thing. Colorguard is a sport that combines dance and props like flags, rifles, sabres, and a other varies items. We perform at the pregame and halftime shows for football games, also during parades. There is also colorguard competitions as well. The group doing colorguard is a lot of the time accompanied by a marching band and mixed into the formations and all that. Hopfully that helped clear it up a bit.

I guess i should say a little bit more about me eh? I've been in the SCA (The Society for Creative Anachronism) for about 11 years now. It's a midieval reinactment group. That's loads of fun. Is anyone here in that as well? I also belly dance... which is loads of fun as well.

aww I thought at first your "colorguard" was what I did. I guess I was hoping to find somebody else who has done my type of colorguard.
My colorguard was for ROTC program in my high school. We too performed before football games and went and competed at drill meets. But there was only 4 of us on the colorguard. Two guards and two flag people. I was the American guard. We did fun stuff with our M-1's and the TX flag and American flag. We weren't allowed to twirl the flags though
Our high school had a flag team (colorguard), pep squad and the cheerleaders. We also had a STOMP team also.

Sorries... I know what you're talking about now. I forgot that what you did is also called a colorguard in some areas. So sorry for the confussion. But very cool for you, I've seen those groups and that's very cool.
At school I'm a band/choir/drama gal. So pretty much anything to do with music, I'm there. (except orchestra that is) Outside of school, I do medieval reinactments a lot. So there's a lotta things in there. I'm basically a gypsy bar wench. Or an entertainer as I prefer to be called. But i've also earned the title of lady, so i have to be good every once in a while but never too good... In that I do European and Middle Eastern dancing, basically your traditional and your belly dancing. Both fun but I do the belly dancing outside of the reinactments as well, so that's a big part of me. I'm hoping to do a belly dance/poi combination some day.

hehe... work... baaaaaa. I've actually been working since I was 15. But it's at our own business so it's not that bad. except in the summer, cuz it's like 11-13 hour days. But since I'm in school right now I only work 4 hours on the weekdays, more on the weekends. But I'm looking for a second job actually, because I have to pay for college myself. So I'm going to the community college first, which a lot cheaper.
That's a really really good question. I think the only answer is that I don't sleep very much. I have school, work, and dance (4 times a week) but luckily our dance studio is in an old school. So I've been going over there early and taking over the gym because the ceilings are sooo high, and I've got tons of space. When I'm not there I've been practicing late at night in my house, but my dad keeps yelling at me for hitting the ceiling fans. The funny thing is we're remodeling and when we're done the attic will be set up as an apartment which I'm taking over til I'm done with college, and my only request was to keep the high ceilings.
