Hello everyone, I am fairly new to poi. My family and I saw someone spinning at the beach and we asked about it. After some online searching we made our own with tennis balls. What we have learned so far has been from this website. I have six kids and they all have their own poi so we can all spin together. Just this week my husband bought fire poi for us. It is awesome. I can't believe how loud it is, I wasn't expecting that. so thanks to everyone on here that has helped us to learn what we have so far. wave

Hello wave

I know what you mean about the fire, even after watching a few fire performers I was still amazed by how noisey they are when they fly past your head and how much wind resistance the flames have.

I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

We are in FL we mostly practice at home, but there are a few drum circles that we go to .We only bought 2 sets of fire poi, the kids have tennis balls on rope .I have told them that once they can do the basic moves for a couple of months with no major mishaps then i will let them try fire with close supervision. My husband doesn't really want them to, but as long as we are safe and very careful I don't see that it will be a problem. Does anyone have an opinion on what age is ok for fire? Our 9 and 10 yr old daughters are the most interested. The boys get too frustrated. We mostly listen to techno but the old man likes something a little slower. I am also starting to become interested in staff .

Good for you!

I honestly don't think that 10 yrs. would be too young to spin fire as long as your children knew that it was only something they were allowed to do with your supervision and they were only allowed to do so once you thought their skill level warranted it. I would also let them know that they were not to try any new tricks while they were spinning fire.

What you should be concerned about would be how they would react if something did happen while they were on fire, i.e. if they got their chains tangled would they freak out and possibly cause themselves some harm, or how would they react if they did manage to get a little bit of fire on themselves. I will say that even adults can react poorly in those types of situations and only you can know your children and know if they are strong enough to deal with such a situation.

What part of FL are you from? My parents just moved back to TX from there, but saw snow and are now planning on moving to Ocala.

We are in the Pinellas county in the largo area. I don't think the kids would freak or anything. as soon as my husband and i got our fire poi, we went over lots of safety with the kids. even though we don't let them spin fire yet they want to watch us so i thought we should go over safety issues. they all help us when we spin and are real quick to spot stray fire . they also know how to operate the fire extinguishers . It's not like i would say ok go play with fire now see ya later. I mean I would be right there with them and make sure they felt comfortable with what they were doing.

Yes I ate the other 43 and they were mighty tastey too! ubblol

Hiya Psych...what Spritie said plus....maybe get them some smaller wicks? The little two inchers may be more suitable for them and not over power their arm-strength. Try a light amount of fuel to start with as well so they won't burn for too long so they can work their way up to full burn times.

As for the young spinning fire issue....I don't think there's a problem if the parents/guardians are happy with their skill level and all safety aspects are taken care of. Recomend a fire blanket if you don't have one...not just for folks catching fire but also so you can put the wicks down safely should you need to cut a routine short.

Happy spinning and send us some pics...I wanna see a family spinning-bee! weavesmiley

Psycho, first I think it's really cool that you are planning to supervise your kids. Do make sure to read the safety articles. Also, make sure you're up on your First Aid before letting this happen.

If your husband likes it slower, many Beethoven Allegros (my favorite is the third movement of his 1st Symphony) are nice slow spinning.

Hello again everyone! Just thought I would post an update. I still won't let the kids spin poi on fire. Some of them have kinda lost interest in poi, but only because as we spend time with other fire people with different toys the kids are finding new fire interests. My youngest son is really into staff. He has used it on fire (pic in gallery). My girls are into fans. I let them light up those too. I feel better with the fixed fire it seems a little safer for now. We have recently made hula hoops that we hope to equip for fire at a later date but for now what fun. We get some really strange looks as people drive by and see all 8 of us hooping in front of our house.
