Posted: Hi, so I joined this forum to ask this question. I am so confused about the names of weaves. In many online tutorials they seemed to have a blanket statement that when one hand is on top the whole time that is a 2 beat weave and when they switch that is a 3 beat weave. But it seems to me that that just doenst make any sense, as I can do a 2 beat weave with swtiching the hands on top, or I can do a 3 beat weave keeping the same hand on top. When I simply count the beat of the motion then it makes sense to me whether or not its a 2 beat or 3 beat. But where does that misinformation come from? or am I doing something that people arent discussing? I also get confsued as to which is actually a reverse weave but I highly doubt that can be explained to me only in words. I just seem to be doing all this stuff but cant logically wrap my head around what its "called" or what the technical terminology is. Then it seems like there isnt always a set basis, I see people posting videos for "2 beat weaves" thats really just a crossover... so I think this willy-nilliness of people posting moves and calling it whatever leads to my confusion. Then I see a popular tutorial video that is describing the 3 beat weave but to me it looks like its only 2 beats!! unless I'm just doing way more advanced things and dont realize it? the thing is I cannot really follow a tutorial and do something, I need to sort of just play with the poi and feel momentum and figure something out, so thats why its difficult for me to then know what it is called that actually doing.and with reverse. It almost seems to me like you can do a 3 beat weave vs. reverse 3 beat weave, but then it seems like you can do another option which is a backwards 3 beat weave (as if reverse and backwards are something DIFFERENT) but I dont know how else to explain it. And then it seems like you can do a 2 beat weave with hands crossing over or NOT and then a 3 beat weave with hands crossing over or not. But nowhere else seems to explain this but to me, with what I am doing thats all that makes sense to me. Can anyone please help me figure this out logically/mentally?! its driving me insane not know!! thanks!

Posted: its a load of jargon that may change from person to person and group to group. heres what most people commonly refer to stuff as (guys, correct me if im wrong anywhere)
beats are full circles made by each poi; you can do 1/2/3/4/5/6/7 (dont think its possible to get better than 7 without tying a knot) and as long as the poi follows along the right planes then you will do whatever trick it is: eg weaves are across the body in a figure of 8 but theres a load of techniques, eg for 5 beat weave on my left side i bend my right hand up in an awkward looking way but for my right side i let the chains do all the work which looks neater (though non-spinners probably dont notice the difference between 3 and 5 beat in the neater method)
poi spinning direction is simple enough; forwards is poi spinning up your back and down your front, backwards/reverse is up your front and down your back. think of them like wheels that if they were touching the ground could propel you forwards/backwards and which direction they would be going for that to happen where you might be getting confused is that some of the jargon (eg backwards/reverse) can be used interchangeably but some people/groups may demand that they have specific places to use them
HoP and Flowtoys tutorials are usually the basis for the majority of terminology, but if you hear something new then ask whoever is using it exactly what that means as some people are similar to yourself when it comes to learning and may come up with their own names for a trick/method which may have different name(s) elsewhere
[edit] also note that when teaching, teachers will dumb it down a bit to avoid technicalities or exceptions. eg i just reread what i said and i ignored the half and quarter beat stuff in order to keep it simple and easier to learn. as you get better you will discover these exceptions which can open up a whole new way of spinning for you EDITED_BY: ABOBer92 (1463054900)
I dont want to be called 'the greatest' or 'one of the greats'; let other guys claim to be the best. I just want to be known as a clown, to me thats the height of my profession. It means you can do everything-sing, dance, and above all, make people laugh
