oh ok, so since i recall we had this query before, i'm curious as to if jelly (uk) equals jello (usa). jello here is gelatin, jiggles a lot, dessert kind of thing. jelly is stuff you put on toast or on a sandwich with peanut butter. so what's the equivalent for you?

... while i was at the supermarket today i decided to do some detective work.. living in Oman we get a variety of food from england and america ...so heres my conclusions ..

jelly (uk) = jello (but we knew that already) biggrin

jelly (us) = nothing like what we have in england .. its totally not jam ..more maybe a preserve ... and i would just like to thank the genius that put peanut butter and grape jelly in the same jar biggrin it look all prety and swirly and tastes good too.. jelly (us) seems to be very artificial

not made by a torturously long process with sugar and fruit!

and as for jam = i couldnt find and american equivilant but you guys probably just call it jelly!! ..you butcher the english language you really do!! what those pilgrims were thinking i just dont know!! rolleyes wink biggrin

*bow* i thankyou *carry on* wink

Strangely enough, jam is called "jam" in the united states. Hi-end jam is called "preserves". Jam is definitely thicker than (american) jelly and usually has chunks of fruit (and seeds if it is strawberry, rasberry, blackberry, or similar). Often times, preserves will have less sugar than jam.

And Narr is quite right about jelly being more artificial. I think it is basically gelatin with either fruit juice or flavoring and sugar. Jam sets because of the pectin naturally in the fruit reacting with being boiled and having surgar added. Perhaps Jelly is similar, but it is like strained jam that has been thinned out with geltin. It is basicaly a step between jam and jello (like Jello with WAY more sugar). I know you can get stuff that is just like american jelly in South Africa, but they still call it jam.

generally the only time I like (american) jelly is with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. for some reason they don't seem correct with jam.

Jello is called "jello" in the states because "Jello brand gelitin" is the leading, and pretty much only brand available.

Now, what I want to know is why citrus jam is called marmalade.
