So I was thinking.

When I was 16 (which, amazingly, was 10 years ago) was a very different person. I was a very stiff, straight-laced, golden-boy. I had never touched drugs, tobacco, or alcoho (and thought they were evil), I had had sex once or twice (well, I was trying to have sex with girls, which was part of the problem), I was on the swim team at school, president of the Spanish club, member of the National Honor Society, and an Eagle Scout. I'd never been to a rave, I'd never spun poi, and I loved to eat meat.

Yet, in many ways, I was the same guy. I had this awe and wonder at the universe around me. I loved to read books by Carl Sagan about the universe. I read voraciously about science in general, in fact. I was wonderstruck by how it all worked. And I did not believe that any being as simple as a god could have put it all together.

That summer (1994), my parents took me to New Zealand. We rented a car in Auckland and drove all the way down to Duneden and then back up to Christchurch. (Too bad it would be 7 more years before I would first find out about a wonderful man named Malcolm Crawshay who lived there, but that's neither here nor there.)

At one point, we were staying in a bed-and-breakfast that was outside of some small town of less than 1,000 people. It's the sort of town where basically all the lights turn off after about 10PM. And we were miles away from it on a huge farm out in the middle of nowhere. So that night, I went for a walk.

It was a cloudless, moonless night. There was no light pollution anywhere. It was just me and my flashlight. And at some point, it occurred to me that I might be able to do some stargazing, so I turned off my flashlight, stared at the blackness that was the ground for a minute and then looked up.

For the first time in my life, I saw the stars! There were so many more than I'd ever seen before! They were different colors, some were brighter than others, there was the haze of the Milky Way, and it was obvious to me that some were closer than others.

I must have stood there with my neck craned at the sky for an hour, not moving, just tripping my brain out. At once I felt enormous and tiny. I realized that I was not just looking at the sky, but I was suspended in the sky, just a resident of a planet circling one of those stars. And that I wasn't just looking up, I was looking out. And I was looking backwards in time. I realized that the universe was above me, below me, and on all sides and that there is no boundary between Earth and Sky because we are all suspended in the heavens on our world. I realized that I was made of the same stuff as the rocks under my feet, the stars in space, and the worlds and their occupants that circle those stars.

Here I was, looking at this universe and yet I was a part of it. And I wanted to go out there, to explore the stars, to see who else might have been staring back at me, to see wonders yet undreamed!

That was the first night I truly experienced awe. That night changed me.

Hmmm.. someones never been to burningman obviously.

Nothing you plan to do ever actually happens out there. something more intersting always hijacks it. and personal conversations just fall out of the sky at the oddest moments, but one you mean to have will never get said.

At regional burns, connecting with someone you mean to connect to is much easier.

*smiles* I've had a moment like that. I was a bit older when it truly hit me...

I was on a geology field trip to death valley. We stayed in a small town, but it got really dark at night as there were no street lights.

Off to the east, I could see the glow from Las Vegas, about an hour or so away, but overhead held an even better light show.

I felt truly small in that moment when I made the connection you made, Lightening. Small, and humble, but incredibly greatful.

Solitude sometimes speaks to you, and you should listen.

heh, i had a moment like that while at death valley too, but mine happened on top of a sand dune, sitting by myself watching the wind brush lightly against the sand.

actually i've had millions of those moments you've talked about lightning. i think i tend to have eyes like a child, always looking at things like i've never seen them before, with a sense of bewilderment and awe. those are the moments that keep me living, truly living.

Or we could just meet up somewhere random some weekend. ^^ Pick a state, any state! Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, where none of us have ever been.

I remember when I first saw the milky way... I was 16 and in Israel. I was with a youth group, and we'd just spent the day hiking through the Negev, and we spent the night in Bedouin tents.. I, along with two guys named Matt, dragged a mattress away from the lights and lay on our backs to stare at the stars... just silence, and their noise in the distance, and one of the Matts chanting "I once dated a girl named Moesha"

E pluribus unum, baby.

I think that these conversations never are planned. They have to come from somewhere in the natural flow of a conversation. There needs to be segue into it and then it flows. Forced conversations don't happen.

And, Van...if we're in the same camp... umm

I'd like that very much, Van. I'd like it very much.

You too, pounce, and Regyt. hug

And it's happened since then. The first time I ever held a test tube full of DNA. The first time I smoked pot. The first time I tripped on shrooms. The first time I ever saw a protein structure in 3D. The first time I ever learned about electron transfer in enzyme active sites. The first time I ever dissected a human body. The first time I ever saw an operation. The first time I delivered a baby. The other night when I watched that man die.

But the craziest one was the time I was at our medical school's memorial service for the cadavers and I swear I ran into my cadaver's daughter (the families were invited). I saw her from a distance and I thought "I have seen that face before." She was the right age, right ethnicity (Asian), and she was there. It must have been her daughter.

And the thoughts about life and death and the linearity and simultaneous circularity of it all started flooding in. It all hit me so hard and so fast that I actually saw double and had to grab a nearby tree for support.

I live for these moments, but they're never scheduled. They happen at the strangest times.

But when they do (and I don't mean this lightly), they're far better than sex.

Yup, even if you are in the same camp...people's schedules can be very different and when you are in the mood to talk to one campmate doesn't mean they are home, or in a state to have any sort of discussion...Strange, but true...

It does mean you will probably see each other at meal times if you are doing any sort of communal food though.

Of course, this is just about burningman. The regional burns are much smaller and it is much easier to have a conversation with someone in particular.
