Let us begin...Hi, my name is Chris. I am 25 year old male in decent shape with no understanding of poi outside of a few fringe friends. I have moved from the USA to a small island in China and decided after some reflecting that I want to try fire poi. I KNOW... you do not go straight to fire... that is just my end goal. I want to perform in the parks. I met some people that maybe could help me, but I am sure you can tell by use of all the conditionals that I am incredulous. Luckily there is a strong community here and plenty of information available via web. So, I want to reach out and ask... can anybody help me get started or show me to good videos. I am having a hard time filtering and am getting overwhelmed. I am sure I can do it all DIY style. I am motivated and have done so with similar arts. But I want the most exposure and practice possible. I am not getting younger and have so much free time. Let's make this happen! I don't know if I can add my email address on here or if that is considered spam, so send a reply and we go from there! Thanks and look forward to hearing back!

welcome to the site, man!

props for having the foresight to take some time before jumping to fire. different people take different times bumping up to fire. i actually was in china last year, funny enough, so decided to hold off on buying fire gear until i made it back to the states. in all i was spinning for about a year before i started spinning fire. not to say you have to wait a year, but i'd really encourage you to enjoy the learning process before you jump into fire gear and then miss out on some of the stuff you can learn and develop along the way. anyway...

this site really is the best resource for learning. have you checked out the "learning" part of the site yet? there are loads of tutorials to keep you busy for a very long time. just click the "learn" tab at the top of the page and head to the poi section. there's also a pretty hefty "make your own gear" section that should be very helpful in the DIY department.

youtube obviously has some as well, but a lot of them are more confusing than helpful in my experience. but if the tutorials here leave you with the occasional question, drexfactor and playpoi (nick is my hero!) are both excellent resources, particularly as you get a little more advanced. and if you find your self still wanting more, DVDs! i'm not typically one to go for buying DVDs, but i can personally recommend "encyclopoidia 2" from the start, and "scales of poi" for when you've got your basics down. both are excellent and really are worth the money if you're serious about improving your craft.

welcome again to the site! i'm jealous that you get to be in china, i miss it something awful. enjoy, and i'll see you around the forums.

Fluidity.
