I just started poi, and I wanted to know, what length would be good for me, I am about 6'1'' and I ordered medium for my first poi so far, because I assumed that it would be better having them a little too short than too long. For practice at least. Also, I was wondering, is it normal to be able to do a 7 beat weave in your first week of poi, because I can do it and my German exchange student can't and he's been doing poi for 4 years. Also, what beginner-low intermediate moves would be good to know for putting on a good show with the glow poi I ordered?

The only luck is bad luck.

your intro doesn't say much about your self but to anwer your questions.
No it isn't normal to do 7 beat weave so early but, good on you:). I know of one guy you just so happened to be freakily gifted at adding extra beats early on.
good moves to learn are hip and soulder reel, 3 (or 7 ) beat wave backwards, windmill so that you can do a fountain.
peaple like to see buterflys

peformance tips. have fun.
engage with the audiance
look and smile at the audiance.
vary your moves and how you do them
learn plane control so that the sudiance sees the best aspects of the move that your doing.
these are just some basics
buzzsaw is also good.
get the scales of poi as soon as you can cos it shows you the ways you can spin without showing you moves and by developing skills this way u can become a happier and more felxible spinner.
It is the same comcept as learning scales in music only more helpfull in my opinion

I would have gone longer rather than short, because you can always shorten them.

7 beat weaves in a weak is a bit unusual. That said, I have never felt any real desire to learn it, but good on yer anyway.

Good moves are any that you are comfortable with. Look in the library part of this site for beginner moves and such. Should find something. smile

And welcome.

Yeah, I hope it's the right length. But even if it isn't, it's only a couple inches. I actually figured out I could do a 7 beat on accident because I was practicing getting out of the habit of 3 beat and I twisted my arms and i got it over to the other side. I was like whoa. And after learning a ton of stuff like I'm starting to get the hang of antispin flowers and I just was able to do a low turn. I think I'm learning in and odd order, but it's pretty cool learning all of these things, then I learned 1 thing, and all of the sudden I got a flow and was all over the place. It was the first time I really got that into it, it was like a drug.

The only luck is bad luck.

Ty very much, about more info on me, I am 6'1'' and very lanky, I have moderately long arms and legs and am very flexible and a quick learner. But what was wierd is that I could just do a backwards 2 and 3 beat after a 7 beat. and i did just learn the fountain and i love it grin. I also just learned how to do the butterfly behind my back and I had fun with that. And ty very much again for your info, I'll look up on those moves. Also it you want to know what i like to dance with them to, my favorite song to do Poi to is Unbesiegt by Equilibrium.
Edit: What do you mean by the scales of poi?

Scales of Poi is a DVD by Nick Woolsey. Quite highly rated by most. wink

My suggestion would be get your planes reasonably solid. Otherwise, just play and see what happens.

It just depends on the person really. I've been spinning a few years (starting with glowsticks and moving up to heavier LEDs) and I think I'm about ready. But for some it can take just a few weeks and sometimes less. You just have to be sure you are completely comfortable with what you know before you light up. Hope that helps.

i will argue in favour of shorter poi.
u can do more moves and use more of the spaces around ur body.
buzzsaw and buzzsaw flowers
weave varients.
but longer one can be shortend mid spin by letting it wrap round ur hand and can produce biger sweeping movements. either way it is win win

Try looking in the tech section. It should have something on hyperloops. I can not actually teach them or anything, since I have not broken them down properly.

There's a huge discussion on poi length if you want to jump deeper into the forums, and I'm sure if you are learning so quickly, you might want to. I think slightly shorter poi give you more control and let you feel whats on the end of your arm better. My girlfriend and I started spinning at the same time, she used poi that go from figer tip to mid-sternum. Poi is an object thethered to something and swung by you. The rest is symantics.

Don't mind me, just passing through.

personally I go by a rough guide of arm length, though it's fun to try longer and shorter as you like. It mainly depends on the tricks you do.

Yeah, the usual way I've heard to size them if you're holding your arm out to your side, and are holding the poi however you hold it, it should not quite reach your armpit. Longer ones are good for big twirly motions, shorter ones are good for very fast movements close to one's body, but the armpit measure should be good and versatile.

Weighted knee socks are nice for exploring what you like to spin. Cheap, very long by default, can be made as short as you want them.

Guess what, they're in!!! grin And it turns out that Medium perfectly reaches from where my thumb starts to my shoulder, it just barely skims it when I measure. I also got the LED glow Poi in on the same day! grin And they're the same way. I love it because i can immediately switch from weaves to buzzsaws and have it just barely not hit me. I already have pics and put them on Facebook. I'm so happy with them. Also, I can do a spiral wrap with the practice poi, but not the ball and string glow poi. Any tips on that? And will my hands eventually calace up? Because I already got like three blisters on my left hand.

Hi*:. Welcome smile

i was just about to post in your thread about manly v girly (fire or non-fire) ...but it's been locked coz people were getting defencive and also a lil bit mean smile

i just wanted to say, yeah totally! smile but i don't think it's about girliness and manliness so much as guys and girls both looking HOT when they have fire (no pun intended) .... fire is a very flattering light! haha ... it's all about the lighting! hehe particularlly when you are talking about an adiance of people who have never seen it before smile it dose just simply look really lovely when someone has fire light on their skin ... warm glowing light is a bit yum smile ...that's not to say that sock poi can't look sexy too ... i'm just saying something magic happens with the lighting when you have that yummy natural fire light smile

also, everything about spinning and fire and all this stuff (as well as just growing up and stuff) *has* made me more confident also ... i'm *still* shy ... but a little *less* shy than i was before i started playing with fire and spinning things and making friends with like minded people... as well as being prowd of what i'm doing and my achievements ... so i totally get what you where saying there with that too smile {hugs} ... i've also come a little out of my shell sinse taking up twirly whirly firey spinny arts (as well as other things) so i get what you are saying smile and YAY for you feeling more confident {hugs}

Also... i'm a girl and like sticks more than poi... dose that make me a manly girl? *shrug* hehe!

i think fire is YUM regardless of gender... and i also think really good skill is YUM regardless of fire ....

just my 2 cents!!!

anywho... sorry to drag a whole other thread into your intro ...but i just wanted to say that i got what you were saying smile

yay! WELCOME!

I wish I could find a nice YUM girl that spins fire, but I'm all alone here frown

And I've gotten a girfriend since that thread and she also thinks that the fire spinning is WOAH!, scary, crazy, and YUM as you amazingly put it.

I'm glad you saw what I was trying to get at with that thread. I can't wait for track to start and I can do it at a track party. Damn that would get my name out there.

I myself am goin to try those sticks as I can really see myself doing those. And YAY I got contacts about 4 days ago and I'm gonna love how I can spin outside and be able to see grin Because My glasses always come off or get hit off, then the lenses come out and it's a pain in the ass to find.

I can't wait for the warm weather! I realized I actually forgot what warm weather is like. I hate when that happens, when I literally can't imagine it being warm outside.
