would it physically be possible to paraglide down from the top of mount everest?

A reason it might not be possible is lack of air density to make the wings function. Whether that is or isn't the case I'm not sure.

It would suck if it wasn't though.

"Whee, I'm hanggliding!"
"Something's not right here."
"Okay, what's going on?"
"OH CRAP! AHHHHHHhhhhhhhh"
>BAM< "Gaaah!"
"Right, let's not try that again"

i dont think so.

as i understand it, the reason paragliding or hang gliding works is because there are sufficient updrafts of warm air that keep the hang glider or paraglider afloat and stop the passenger from descending too quickly.

As Mount Everest is incredibly high up and well below zero temperatures, I would suggest that there are unlikely to be enough warm air updrafts to support the weight of a paraglider.

Sorry Jon.

Currently on the right side up of the world.

i'm with the sheep on this one.

air density would be fine and as long as you had a shallower glide path than the slope of everest (and i hear its pretty steep near the top...) you wouldn't need to take advantage of thermals.

i reckon you'd need a chopper to get you up there with one though so you might as well just sky dive from above everest and parachute down next to it.

well i thought that once you hit hot air you would not be able to go down, you may just spend forever wafting through time on a thermal current, although it all goes down near the equator or somewthing doesnt it? either that or you would descend too fast and get that thing that divers get when they go up too fast, or very sore popping ears.

Yea, easy!!!!

An American dude, Vern Tejas did it in ‘88-89 I think, and a French couple Claire Bernier Roche and Zebulon did it in tandem from the summit directly to Base Camp in 2001. I’ll have a go if you want to be the third!!

Most winter mountaineering accidents happen on the decent when your knackered and you’ve already peaked (you know, having a smoke and thinking about your next climb) – so it’s probably a really good way to do it.

i'm afraid you can't get the bends that way dude.
otherwise skydivers would be randomly bursting all over the sky.

first of all, the external air-pressure increases as you lose altitude and secondly, there would be no excess nitrogen in your blood stream to form the bubbles anyway.

the sore ear popping thing (or sore ears from not popping thing, as is usually the case) could happen though. ouch!
