So, i posted this over on tribe but had no response frown not quite sure why, i was sure it was interesting.... tongue (mmmmm ego)

basically, i know that this has been partly covered in a few threads, but i think its worth a new one -

what sort of numbers and styles are there in each country? I've only done ones i've been to, and visited the scene a little. please feel free to add, comment, tell me i'm stupid, laugh, etc...

Scotland: maybe 400 who can spin more than a few things. maybe 10-20,000 altogether who've picked it up more than a couple of times....?
general style - some ubergeek, some total pagan hippy.

England: maybe 10-15,000 in cat A, 100,000 in catB
GS - london primarily static, leaning to juggling. several other major centres - bristol, guildford, leeds, manchester, southampton. Spinning meets in most smaller cities and lots of larger towns.

Wales: no spinning, only sheep and leeks wink

France: no idea on numbers. probably a little less than in England
Lots of fire breathers. very pattern based staff manipulation. lots of fluidity in both staff and poi (had danae to inspire, all those years ago)

Austria: similar number to scotland (simlar populations, but spinners more spread between cities)
Style - Ubergeek to Ubercheese. any country that can produce fenfire, Infire, Tirasaru, Solar and so many other performance troupes is slightly mental, if you ask me.

Spain - ????
never met any technical spinners from spain - all have been dreadlocked hippies enjoying their tool ubblol wink

Italy - ??????
similar, except i know 4 or five who definitely aren't (dreaddy hippies)

Germany - funnily enough i spent nearly a month in germany, at festivals, and met about 3 german spinners. i know loads of german jugglers though, and a few did come to uber, but not many....
syle? josh and entheogen are smooooooooth. Andy house is legendary. Max is a robot. Olivier is french wink anya is a goddess.

Ireland - growing number of spinners. similar to scotland, again
ronan/andy house spinning is very popular. lots of newbies so picking up internet style.

Australia- loads of spinners. probably approaching england numbers, i'd say
style? very, very dancy, really into fire, not so tricks based. more tricksy people with more internet use (i.e. recently) big meets in all major cities (sydney a bit slack). kyle is a style unto himself. nutter.

NZ - well, a bit different - not including maori? similar to Scotland numbers. including maori and people taught poi at school? wow. huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge.
style? maori poi is incredible. and not in any way like what we call poi. as for general spinners? not highly technical, quite fluid. like australia lite wink lots of transient poi spinners - spherculist matt is there at the moment, which instantly puts their tech level up to 11, but lowers dancing to about 1.2 wink

where else have i been...

Finland - small spinning population
style - quite techy - lot of Antti and Tommi clones, lot of quite tribal spinning. well cool.

Poland - small spinning population relative to size, when compared to old 'western' europe countries.
not very technical, lots of 'ooooh fire' if you know what i mean. this could be out of date now, i haven't been there for 4 years.

switzerland: 5 spinners, and i think i can name them all...
stlye - clockwork, of course wink (aaaah. till, we love you)

right. i think i'm done. I won't comment on the US.... cause i'll get lynched ;o)

smiles

Rob

Syntax error... confused Dunno where you go with this...

Munich:

- Andy the "Poibox"

- Jalaanaa (about 5 performers)

- Goetterfunken (2)

- Sonnenflammen (5)

- Sternenkinder (up to 10)

- myself (on the endangered species list)

So Munich alone has more than 20 (semi/ professional) spinners... "boxtalk"? umm tongue wink hug

Is this taking a similar direction as martial arts "schools"? I have had the chance to see the G's from their early years on and I reckon they still have their Thai roots as we speak shrug *scratches head*

Where are you going with this, Rob?

May I announce to have been the first one (I know) who did a "head-helicopter"... Already three years ago shrug do I get a decoration now? Or could I run around Burning Man with big black sideburns and a fat gut, yelling for beer and freedom fries? wink

help no offense meant footinmouth but we all are just very tiny drops in the Pacific, ready to evaporate.

I have my own style, martial arts and dance. No advanced geekery, little contact... so call me "short haired hippie too busy with other things to practice enough" if you like... hug hug wink wink wink hug hug

interesting topic:)

in Slovakia, we have about 10 really good poi spinners & about the same number of really good staff people and 3 serious contact jugglers.. half of these people live abroad..

the rest is half hippies and half historical fencers.. hippies absolutely against spinning for money and thus hardly being able to spin more than a few weave and bt tricks.. and fencers all spinning only for money without any regard for the fun part of spinning and thus hardly being able to spin more than a few weave and bt tricks.. the more visible part of our spinning scene is terrible smile

but there are luckily more and more people that want to advance beyond the usual lame fencer/lame hippie style..

Smile.. It confuses people..:)

The spinning community in israel is about 200+ people, i'd guess about 50 of them are kinda technical.
i personally know about 20 technical spinners.
as far as i can tell there isn't really a specific local style here, it really depends on which vids we're learning from. my style is mostly influenced from rob's videos and oli and ros's videos. some of my friends are more influenced by nick woolsey and yuta. and others just have their own style.

Pondered more...

What it comes down to - IMO - is a mix

1. predespositions
1.1 gender
1.2 ethnical
1.3 national
2. line of teachers/ role models
3. initial toys
4. personality

So I guess you really do have a valid point here, Rob.

examples:

1.1 guys tend to go more into the martial side of dance whilst gals are more into the fluidity and grace (genes)
1.2 Asians have a different attitude towards performance than Europeans - "no smile policy" and "dancing is for gals only"
1.3 Germans (as you may realize by this post ubblol are generally technicians, whilst French have a more graceful approach
2. Looking at certain moves (initial kick-up of Poi for example) I trace them back to ppl/ teachers where I have seen them first ("Art" of Chiang Mai). I am aware that they might have gotten the move from others (which I can't verify, as I feel ridiculous asking someone about the origins of each and every move) and then there is the "100 munky syndrom" along with the "morphogenetic field" theory.
3. I'd say the initial toy one mocks with leaves an imprint. If one comes from the juggling side (balls and clubs) he's more likely to let go of t/his staff or poi, than the one who comes from the martial art alley. Same applies to initial firetoys... and having said this it is all
4. (depending on) individual personality...

Some are more comfortable in just imitating others, some have a stronger individuality and will only stick to what comes out of themselves... Some imitate moves over and over and crystalize their own style, some are just lucky when discovering a new move (which doesn't necessarily mean they are geeks in all the others)... bluargh I'm geeking ubblol footinmouth

yes it's true, level in italy is very poor, but slowly something is changing, (i hope...).
In my city, naples, one of the bigger of south, there are 3-4 spinners that know a little bit more than waves, butterfly and TTN, but thera are a lot of people that use kiwido for fun sometime or in the parties. But, i repete, level is very low. The good thing is that whit a little bit of isolation, hyperloops, tossing, flowers etc you can begane a moster for the other guys! lol

I, in the boring midlands, learnt initially from my ladyfriend, then discovered HOP and internet videos to steal ideas from. I've met a few other technical poi spinners round here (Hyperlight, polarity, yakumo) mainly in Malvern, but I've found one other staffer who seems to take it as seriously as I do. As regards my own style, I'm not overly techy, or dancey, but I try and do things cleanly and smoothly, rather than fasterwithlesscontrol or overly flash and poncey.

I have been learning poi from various ravers in Denver when not being confined to the military academy I am at now in a small po-dunk town in the middle of nowhere in Missouri. It's fun practicing poi at a military academy peace especially when you have a tattoo of a peace sign and all the people you live with are future army officers... Anyways, my syle has formed into very much an extension of my true self, a little whacky and odd, but definately techy combined with dancey, taking the wholistic approach to it all. So I'm a hippy who learned from ravers (arguably the new-age hippies) and already have a ticket for this years burning man (my first one!).

I feel blessed. I picked poi up while living in Guatemala, from watching all the turistas who floated through from England, Sweden, France, Germany, Australia, and the States.

I can definitely see a difference between the looser, free-flowing style of the tribal dancers, the techno-ravers who prefer more fast-paced dancing, and the concentrated focus that the truly technical aficionados practiced.

Unfortunately, Atlanta seems a tad devoid of this scene. My own style is heavily influenced by the original techno-tribe spinning. However, now (being on my own) Im relegated to learning my technical skills via internet. I wish there were more people here that could help me perfect my planes though. With that, I might be able to improve my transitions and blend the technical moves with the more raw, primitive dance of tribal beats and rhythms.

Squid, Atlanta does have some very skilled spinners! I can think of 5 or 6 right off the top of my head. When I taught a workshop down there in March the spinners that attended were some of the better ones that I've encountered in all my travels along the Eastern Seaboard. Oh and all of them were really great people too. I can't wait to go back in July for another round of workshops just to hang with them again.

Do you go to the land trust? There's a huge drum circle and fire jam there. It's the first and third Saturday of every month in little Five Points. If you need more info on it send me a PM, because your def missing out if you've never gone.

Sorry if this was bit off topic. redface

It's no problem. I know how much it sucks to be an isolated spinner though it does have it's perks. It most certainly forces you into creating your own style, that's for sure.

The first true spinner I ever met was a super nice lady from Sweden. Its hard to think back and analyze her technical skills. I was simply blown away by it all.

Do the Swedes tend to go for the dancey, flow thing, or are they more skill-based tricked out kind of things? I can see looking at your pics that those are some very bendy things you've got going with the buzzsaw there. smile

You remember the girls name? I think (maybe taking water over my head) that I know most of the spinners in sweden that actually have spinning as a true interest.

Nowdays people are more for the flowythingy and less techy stuff but we still got some spinners that are so techy that it blows my mind.Talking about stuff like tanglethrows with whipcatches betwen the legs and stuff like that :-/

Im more of a soft spinning dude, sometimes tending to be a little techy. Ask Durps, Newgabe, JC Firetricks, Meenik or someone that have seen me spin, can`t talk about my own spinning in a third person perspective biggrin

But in the end I would say that Sweden is comming up strong amond all spinning nations :P

new zealand has some amazing ubertech spinners. we keep it under wraps, though (no pun intended).

lots of wraps and stalls and throws and wibbles and contacts galore.

many hippies/jungle folk inhabit the realm of dance-more-tech-less.

is it a theme to have ubergeek spinners choosing to spin socks (/material/"practise poi") over spinnng fire?

i generally spin when and where noone else sees me.. i know i should share my stuff, but... i enter a different place when i spin by myself, than when i spin where there are others watching...

anyway! there are lots of really good spinners in nz, we just keep quiet. you have to hunt us down (but wont, which is how we like it).

What. Moonfest is no more?! But why?!

//Thomas

Indeed, it was a wonderful gathering, eh and we all miss it heaps. It was stopped for a few reasons:

*The council decided to close/redevelop that part of the park

*Too many sightseers were bringing booze = not nice things as silly pissed people left afterwards

*Huge drum circle going on too late, disturbing neighbours (though really it was not loud up the top of the cliffs.)

*new people doing dumb stuff like firebreathing, spinning next to little kids and lighting up elsewhere than the sand (so us oldies were spending too much mental energy being safety and rubbish police rather than just having a spin with our mates)

*as it was getting so big, and on *their* land, the council was making noises about insurance. As Moon ubblove Pixie was known to be the organiser, this was starting to look like her responsibility

* as Moon ubblove Pixie had been devoting every full moon for something like 9 years to being there, she was ready to read the signs and free herself for other possibilities.

There is discussion about it [Old link]

Just in case you might think Bender has gone mad (now why on earth would you think that?) I would hasten to point out that he is in fact a master of cultural juxtaposition. Just look at his avatar eek

More ontopic, I don't have much to add, as I've been stuck on this island for too long. I'll come poke around Europe very soon and then give my two cents worth.

Contact without dance is like sex without wiggling.
A) it does feel as good
