ok, I am still fairly new to poi, and pretty much spin mostly with my practice tennis ball jobs :-p

I do so on a very regular basis, 2-6 times a day normally, from 15 min to 2 hours depending on what else I have to do and how I am feeling. That is until recently.

My left shoulder has begun hurting and I can't attribute it to anything else as I haven't been doing anything else actively! There is pain in the joint and a lump just above the collar bone (feels like it is in the trapezeus muscle) that is hard and shoots pain from where its at in the front in a line to the lower back part of my shoulder affecting the lat on my left side as well.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this sort of thing, and if so, what I should do about it. I am a fairly poor student, so if I can avoid the docs I would like to, but I have rested it for three days now, and it has not diminished. I have asked some friends who played football in HS and what not, they said possibly a pulled or strained muscle in that region? I don't know, one day the pain was there, and it just kinda grew.

I guess I was hoping someone here would have experienced something similar, and knows what to do about it, because I really don't like being seperated from the poi.

But anyhow, Thanks for reading, I know I can be long winded at times and I apologise for that.
Catch you guys later.
Always,
Brian

I got something similar sounding in my forearm when I'd only been spinning (staff) for a few months.

I had to stop using that arm, to spin, entirely for quite a while. Not saying that that's the case with you.

I can't recall what the doctors specifically called my ailment (nearly two years ago now). But it was a kind of tendonitis due to repeated pressure/strain being put on the tendons in my arm.

I'm just rambling - feel free to ignore me.

Someone much cleverer than me will be along to help you soon enough I'm sure.....

if it is tendonitis, (which i have had on numerous occasions, and it sounds like the right kinda pain) you should ice it for a couple of days, then apply heat as often as you can, and when you cant put deep heat on it, something like dencorub or tiger balm. also rest until you cant feel the pain when you are still, then gradually (and i MEAN gradually) start to stretch the joint again, over a few days. then you should be right!! this whole process can take anywhere from 4 days to 2 weeks, depending on the severity, so just stick it out!!! and if its not tendonitis.....dont ask me!

THank you very much adrenaline, any suggestions on how often, for how long, what intervals to apply heat and cold?

in all honesty, not generally, no.

I usually don't get loose till about fifteen minutes into the session, so I don't go real hard fast ya know? I don't do btb stuff very well till I have been spinning just to warm up in that way for about five to ten min.

THere are lots of stretches though, nothing has ever been reccomended to me, I don't know what kind of stretches you would do though, perhaps some wrist and shoulder ones?

with ice its usually ten minutes on ten minutes off for about half an hour. they say the same with heat but it heals quicker if heat is as constant as you can get it. with warming up, maybe just circle your wrists/elbows/shoulders a few times before getting right into it. hope all is going well!!!

Ok, I don't normally do this on the boards, but speaking as a medical student, what you are talking about sounds like you have damaged a nerve. The lump is especially disturbing since you may have ruptured a blood vessel. You need to see a doctor so that you can stop the damage and allow for recovery.

If you persist in spinning without seeking medical attention, you could cause permanent damage to the nerve, which could result in local paralysis. Please see a doctor.

THank you both very much,

Some people have said that that could have been it, I haven't been doing much at all, and have suspended all spinning activities for over a week now. I mostly have been just sleeping and that sort of thing. I will get it checked out though as soon as possible. Thank you again.

Bumping up a waaaay old thread, but practicing flowers has left me with a rather painful left shoulder. I'm getting a stabbing/burning pain on the front of the joint, just above the armpit, which has just been twinging rather badly when I picked up my bass to play, very worrying! I can either rest on poi or bass, losing both will cause immediate insanity!

So, anyone got a more specific idea of what's wrong (guessing something tendony) and can maybe suggest a way to speed the healing and/or support it, as I have to work with it, and I do a fair amount of heavy lifting...

Have you ever dislocated it? Did it feel out of place?

You you have trouble lifting it out to 90 degrees or higher next to your body?

It could be many things... if you want a real diagnosis see a doctor.. :P

If it persists into this week I shall have to I think, but no problem raising it or anything, and no dislocation or anything. Just occurred to me that if this is indeed poi-induced other people may be able to offer some advice from experience! smile

why dont you try one of this creams with parancetamol is what they do with sports people... try to massage it gently while applying and dont lift things for a couple of days.

I had to beat him to death with his own shoes... but that's another story all together.

Getting injury advice off the 'net isn't the best thing you could do. Go talk to a doctor if you're that worried smile

well, the above basically excludes impingment and dislocation, which are the surgical problems, so it may just be rest and relaxation thats needed.

non, it could be underlying tumour on the spine or brain creating referred pain. smile
