This is why I trained as a secondary teacher..... not much help is it.

You have a supervisor don't you? Do they have any ideas. I guess it wouldn't be hard to just keep the little folk entertained, but you probarbly need some educational value in there. I find that lots of shorter tasks and activities will work best. Makes it harder for you in the planning, but it may just save your sanity.

Good luck.

Howdy
I used to be a child care techer so here are heaps of ideas that I used to play with the Kids and some songs too...
SONGS

"little peter rabbit has a fly upon his nose"
"alice the camel"
"five fat sausages" this is a cool one, use your hand to count down the sausages as they "sizzle sizzle sizzle and then BANG!!!" (clap your hands together)
So it goes "five fat sausages sizzling in the pan, one went sizzle sizzle sizzle and then it went BANG!!!" (clap hands together) they love that one.
Hows about "I knew an old lady, who swallowed a fly"
then there is this one (holding up your hands)
"open, shut them, open, shut them, give a little clap! Open, shut them, open, shut them , lay them in your lap. Creep them, creep them, creep them, creep them, Right up to your chin. Open wide your little mouth ..BUT DO NOT LET THEM IN! Shake them, shake them, shake them, shake them, shake them, just like this. Roll them in a little ball.... then blow a little kiss, MUAH!!!!"
(just do the hand actions as the song says)
GAMES
"duck, duck, duck, goose!" ( kids sit in a circle and then one child is chosen as the one that walks around the circle patting each child on the head and allocating wheter or not they are a duck or a goose. When the child chooses a goose, the goose jumps up and chases the other child around the circle until they reach the empty spot in the circle where the first child sits down.) YAY!
"chinese whispers" ( i think most kids have played that game)
"Heads down tails up" (There are 5 different children that stand at the front and the rest crough down and hide thefaces while puttin a little finger up in the air. The five kids then goe aroung the group very quietly and choose someone then they touch the little finger that is being held up. Then the little finger is put down, and then everyone sits up. The ones that were chosen have to try to guess which of the five children picked them. If they are right then they get a turn up they front if they are not they have to sit back down again!!)
Hope that helps. If you have any q's just pm me and Ill help you as much as I can...
PS... IM JUST A BIG KID AT HEART

TAJ "boat mummy." VALURA "yes sweetie you went on a boat, was daddy there with you?" TAJ "no, but monkey on boat" VALURA "well then sweetie, Daddy WAS there with you"

Read them "Where the Wild Things Are" then make monster costumes out of egg cartons.

Try some of the following messy activities:

Finger paintingplay doughCalculusmaking potato stamps
More Games

duck duck goosestuck in the mudI spyBingo
Songs & Dances

Hokey Pokeythe birdy dancethe wheels on the bus
I just wish the people I teach now were as easy to entertain and control

It was a day for screaming at inanimate objects.

What this calls for is a special mix of psychology and extreme violence...

some good game things i know of are:

Nose on red: to start the game you say nose on red and every one has to find something red and put there nose on it then you make up other combinations like foot on blue of hand on pink, if you thik that the kids can deal with it you eliminate the person who get there last so at the end there is a winner.

pirate pete; in this one you make up actions for piraty words and call them out and the kids have to quicly do them and tri not to get confused.
for example:
climb the rigging: pretend to climb up a ladder
scrub the deck: pretend to scrub the floor
captins coming: stand to attention.
dead rats: lie on you back and kick your legs
the next ones are a bit confusing
port: run to one sid of the room
starbourt: run to the other side of the room

parachute games go down well with the kids to

missie

I {Heart} hand me downs and spinning in the snow.

I haven't had much experience with young children (8 and under) but i have worked with some extremely challenging children, learning difficulties, literacy problems, foster children, etc. I found being yourself and going with the flow was the best practice, learn about each childs character. Each child will have likes and dislikes, find the creative, intro/extroverted ones and let them feed off each other. They are small people. remember that. (not to patronise!) Think about your old teachers or role models. What did they say/do that made you happy or sad?
Thjink will they remember you when they are older, you can always tell a good teacher from that. AND ALWAYS SMILE!

Hope that was some use.

Enjoy what you have achieved already and never forget why you chose to do it in the first place. (unless it was the money)

ok, if you're willing to take the risk of going absolutely insane i suggest you watch that all-time american fave 'grandpas magical toys' if after having done so you still have the mental capacity to hang out with little children you will have enriched your song/game/etc. knowledge to the point of no return...
another good thing are all thos little drama warmups. all four-year-olds i know love improv games even if they totally mess them up every time.
toilet humor actually involving toilets will always get a screech and a laugh, though most of the screeches will be from mothers...

It aint broke...It just lacks large amounts of duct-tape!
