ASTONISHING, said Death. REALLY ASTONISHING. LET ME PUT FORWARD ANOTHER SUGGESTION: THAT YOU ARE NOTHING MORE THAN A LUCKY SPECIES OF APE THAT IS TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE COMPLEXITIES OF CREATION VIA A LANGUAGE THAT EVOLVED IN ORDER TO TELL ONE ANOTHER WHERE THE RIPE FRUIT WAS?

I rather like that line.

Actually reminds me of something that I've been thinking of for a while. After I die i would like to be buried under a tree, maybe even chuck some flowers around. My body's just going to rot so it may as well be put to some good and nourish a tree.

So, a few questions to anyone that knows or feels like answering:

How would I actually arrange for this? I'm vaguely aware that you can't just bury a dead body anywhere.

Would it actually work? Is there any risk that I'd end up poisoning the tree or something?

Does anyone else want something unusual done with them after they die?

Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand and I can beat the world into submission.

it's what i think i'll end up wanting
my uncle was an interesting man, and when he went to plan his funeral (he had warning-cancer) he picked out a plain pine box. that, he decided, was to be his casket.
the sales person argued that they used those for cremations, and they could not be used for actual burials. it was a long drawn out battle, but my uncle, they didn't realize, had incredible stubbornness.
after he died, they tried to convince the family to chose something a bit more becoming, we did not want uncle bud haunting us, so we stayed with his wishes smile
it was so simple, especially with the flag draped over it (he was a korean POW)...i think i shall go through that battle with the funeral people and me a pine box

There was a sigh from Death. Space he thought. That was the trouble. It was never like this on worlds with everlastingly cloudy skies. But once humans saw all that space, their brains expanded to try and fill it up.

"No answer, eh?" said the dying philosopher. "Feel a bit old-fashioned, do we?"

.... I was almost expecting him to pull the chainsaw... wink

... errm, next is:

looking at the light, hearing the smooth voice go:

"Come on step into the light..."

- Stepping into the light

"Well done now: name, age, address, social security number! Where have you been that one day nobody remembers?!"...

... no serious, next is the answer to the big question, the last (unsolved) mystery, the jackpot or "dough, missed it (again)!", it's the "last quest" and something everybody has to figure out for themselves... biggrin

Oh that story is brilliant, I read it a while ago, Death is definately my favourite of all the Terry Pratchett characters!

Speed of Dark: As yet unmeasured, but believed to be faster than light owing to its ability to move so quickly out of light's way. -- Terry Pratchett

Hey- Domino- i think the only place where you can legally do that in the UK is in certain areas of the highlands in scotland....now im not sure of that so check it! it would be a nice way though, ive often thought it seems logical just to be left to decompose in a forest where your bodily nutrients can be easily reintegrated etc....... but then again im full of all sorts of hippie nonsense ubbloco

You can have a "green" funeral in New Zealand:

and in the UK https://www.naturaldeath.org.uk/

As for being buried standing up - I heard Japan's famous sword saint Musashi was buried standing up in his armour guarding the main road in his area. Other than that it's a long way to dig down!

I have several large jars of the stuff. I actually like it... a little. And don't tell anyone I admitted to it.
