So, when i first starting spinning last summer i was a tad lazy with learning left and right backwards forwards versions of moves. I learn't alot quite fast untill i felt happy that I could spin at atleast a vauge decent level. So I was thinking I need to go back and learn what i didn't learn..learn to do everything backwards and not just some things backwards ect.

I figured this would be relatively easy. haha..was i wrong

I just spent an hour in the garden trying to do hip reals..yes hip reals redface ubblol I perfected them one way very early on and i only realised when i tryed to whilst spinning the other day that I couldn't the other way. I mean..its a hip real. ubblol How hard can it be. I know how to do it... each hand seperatly fine...but together....i just..can not..do a simple hip real... ubblol

Its annoying when your hands just don't go where your brain is sure its telling them too isn't it?

haha...the joy

It can be a real pain in the ass I know, essentially relearning a move you thought you knew, but it will pay off in the long run when you DON'T find yourself transitioning into a move then immediately thinking..aw crap..I can't do this move in this direction....bail out.

Today the price is frustration, but tomorrow you'll be enjoying the benefits of freely moving with your poi smile smile

Yep... if you want to move, or dance with your poi at all, you have to be able to the move in all directions... for the symmetry.

Start again, doing each basic move well... and it feels so much better.

It'll take you Much longer to get onto the tricks... but that's ok, because at least the basics will be good smile

Getting to the other side smile

*raises hand* I feel the Pain, I've just started at the basics and my brain tells my hands one thing, they do another, the result is me being hit somewhere painful.

At least you can do hip reels one way ubblol I can't do them at all! (.....yet biggrin)

I did something very simalar.. hug

I learnt many techy moves cause I found reels and stuff boring.

I then watched some people spin non-technicly but with beautiful flow and realised I had some learning to do..

I spent the next 6 months practicing all the basic stuff I've missed. I also found reels quite hard to begin with....

but in the end I found alot of the techy stuff easier after all that basic practice

But it's worth the effort.. biggrin

I still do basic practices sometimes. and a while back meg pointed out some deficinecys in my left hand which I'm trying to rectify.... frown

... ok so i haven't done poi in a year and a half or so.

I went to a jugglers meet in the city on Saturday night and picked up my poi for the first time.

It didn't take me no longer than 30 minutes of playing around to find my planes and toy about with some basic moves.

I was playing with offsets too....

Right there were some italians from g.org there doing poi also... basically trying isolations and stuff, nothing basic other than a 3 beat weave is what i saw... seems that every one did a garthy here too and learnt techy stuff before the basics.

However my point... is that i'm going through and relearning basics too, and it's fun... i keep finding more stuff that i didn't quite fully understand before.

ubbrollsmile keep your chin up!

ahhhh i have the same problem. I can spin all the moves i learnt to a 't', but only forwards, or one way. Like the 3 beat weave. I cant do it backwards!

Ive only just managed to squeeze out a BTB Butterfly!! And I still conk myself in the head once in a while lol!

I guess I'll have to go back to basics too!

I never bothered learning reels either. Other stuff seemed more fun at the time. I'm considering banning myself from doing anything else for a while, and really exploring reels properly, because they're so important for transitions. And keeping your planes straight - something else I can't do rolleyes

I'm pretty sure that's exactly why I've never bothered learning them - too annoying!

I know the feeling, but it pays off for sure. I've spent the last three months without really learning any new tricks, just learning transitions and freedom of movement (reels!). I thought it hadn't changed my spinning much, but I came home from uni and all my Brummie spinning mates told me how much better I'd got. I also just find poi more fun now - I can dance and create moves much more easily
