flail around a lot and duck!

if you search you will find lots of advice about metiors, including the above jem.

to make a metior strach out, hold the metior further toward the front (the bit coming from your thumb/finger should be shorter) and make figure 8 movments, and it should streach out.

in other words, flail and duck.

I'd have to agree with Nx here.
I've been doing meteor for about a month now, I'm getting alright but the first two weeks you will feel like your getting nothing but bruises! Stick with it and you'll love it.

The meteors I mean not the bruises.

Unless your into that sorta thing which is fine.

It's just I'm not.

Flail and duck.

I haven't gotten hit much... I just made mine out of two thick strings and two marbles... it's not the massed produced kind, but it still works. It's a bit short, though...

I just remade my meteor. It's almost as tall as me! (5'4"ish)
Well, I need to know some basic tricks, because I want to be able to understand everyone else when they talk about butterflys and helicopters and buttercopters and heliflies...

a butterfly is when the two ends are spinning on a paralell plane to your body in front. when on fire the two heads cross each other and it simply looks like a butterfly beating its wings up and down.

a helicopter is when its spinning above you like helicopter blades

Is it the Truth?
Is it Fair to all concerned?
Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

i take it you can already poi? i found the best way to start is with poi moves. eventualy you get it so it sits strait, n then you just let go with one hand. i started on a weave. but, [Nx?] is rite. it basicly comes to flail and duck. poticularly the duck. i forgot that bit once. it hurt. although im not as worried about my face as i am about other areas. sometimes, instead of duck, u have to jump. peace

get some poi first i should think. it'll help improve your co-ordination and learn the feeling.

Check out the free poi lessons on this site. Meteor is fun, I am not sure quite how they manage to be more painful than poi (perhaps it is because mine are made of rope with monkey fists on which are prolly harder than my poi, or perhaps it's the speed) but they are, and I wouldn't recommend them unless you are already pretty handy with poi, staff or both.

Well, i won't need to buy a pair of poi... I made my meteor with two different strings. they have fishing weights tied to the end with dental floss... biggrin now, if only i could find my meteor. HEEEEEEERE METEOR METEOR..... oh, that won't work.

I recently started meteor myself, and already I can understand the wisdom behind 'flail and duck'.

Doing poi beforehand helps a lot, both are extremely similar yet different - i find that the meteor is restricted in various BtB (behind the back) moves, but much more fun for things like whirls where the extra kinetic energy helps out a lot.

When learning any new trick, even if you can do it awkwardly but still get the gist of it you'll be fine, just do it over and over. Eventually your body'll learn how to do it and you'll slip into it.

Basically, I'm gonna experiment a lot with meteor, you should too - however any help would be awesome!

I've done it, I've found a way to throw the meteor and catch it! After much trial and error (and even more 'flail and ducking'(particularly the ducking) I have done done it, joy, rapture, bouncing around on my head hehe
Start with a high butterfly (i.e. around head height), get some good speed up on it and when the ends meet up at the top, launch it into the air! Warning! Some common sense may be required to catch it ubbloco

Same here, i started meteor recently after about a year of poi, The flail and duck advice advice is good, but the best way to learn (from my poi mentor Shawnie) is to just be born with it.

Start with some poi moves, and if that doesn't work cuz ya don't do poi, just try spinning with them under control, and move them around once your comfortable with it.

Take it slow at first, the faster they spin, the more they hurt when they hit you.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

Anyplace can be a fireplace, you just need to be persistant enough.
