I have just finished Year 12. Done my last exam. Sat in my last classroom. I have been wishing for this day for so many years but now that it is here, i feel a great anti-climax. The first few hours were weird, i didnt feel any different. Then i felt happy and light knowing that i had put so much time into this and i really did finish it. I thought that once year 12 was over i would have answers to many questions. But the truth is, i dont and im more scared about everything than i couldve imagined. I have been sitting up at night thinking. Many questions running through my mind:

- What am i meant to be doing?

Is there something that i should be doing with my life. Is it possible to actually screw up your own life by making one decision like 'what i want to do after i finish skool?'

- What is the meaning of life?

This question seems really deep but im sure at one point you must sit and ponder the answers available. Is there actually something that each of us are meant to achieve in our lifes? Or are we meant to wander aimlessly through our lives not understanding why we are actually here. Now this is not a depressing question, although sometimes it can pose that problem.

- Why are we sooo compelled to 'act'?

I see many people that 'act'......meaning they just play along with other people, not actually being ourselves. I see myself do it aswell and i cant help but question my own motives behind that. Are we so insecure as a society that we must 'act' a certain way so other people might like us or that one person will notice us more? I dont notice I'm actually doing it until afterwards when i look back and say 'that was not how i really am'. I like to think that most of the time i am completly honest and without guards. But again, not always.

These questions have been playing in my mind recently like a broken record. I know, many people would think, 'dont worry about all that stuff, just have fun'. I say that to others and myself alot of the time. But i cant help but think about it.

Sometimes i feel like i am looking for an answer where there are none. And other times i feel like i know the answer but its the question that i dont know.

I love reading and i am always looking out for books that offer different thoughts. Like the Celestein Prophercy. I read that last year and for a short time it changed my life. I read it again recently and i find myself contemplating life alot more. Does anyone know any good books or thesis's that are available? I would love to read them.

I believe that i, as many other people do, have the burden of knowledge. As a child, 5-10 years old, i really didnt know anything about life and think those were the happiest days of my life. Everything was a mystery to me. Now I have found answers to alot of the questions that i never knew as a kid. Now i think about it more, i will never get that mystery back, but while i am still asking questions i should find some more answers.

If this doesnt really make sense, i apologise. My mind is so scattered these days. It is speeding through the short highway that is life.

So many questions, some with answers some without.
So many answers, some with questions some without.

Any comments on anything above?

comments? yes.

it'll be a year to the day this thrusday when i finished year 12, and i still feel like that shrug.

believe it or not a few weeks ago i absentmindedly wondered if i had any homework to do, then realised i hadnt been at school for nearly a year. i think i'll enjoy studying after having a years break. my advice to you in terms of what to do next year is if you're unsure of your future intentions (which you seem to be) is to just kick back, take a break and smell the roses. when i finished school i spent the first 6 months being unemployed and i can tell you, although you might wonder why we have a compulsion to act, sitting around thinking about why that is for six months gets really bloody monotonous, and it was actually a relief to find a job just so i'd stop asking cyclic questions of myself. then i got a job with really cool people working 20 hours a week. still relaxing and the hours enables me to enjoy doing whatever i want while making some money. now i'm moving to launceston next year for uni and cant wait for a new change, new faces and new oppertunities.

did any of the questions you asked get answered for me over this year? no, but i'm hopeful they might be oneday. and at least i know that i dont want to sit around waiting for the answers to come to me.

funny now: when in school, all we wanted is to get out.

when we were finished, all we wanted was to go back in.

washing your own socks is a mayor step in life...

- the meaning of life? umm you're not asking others to tell YOU, what the meaning of YOUR life is, now do ya?

if you're looking for a readymade answer, join scientology, the krishna movement or other spiritual communities, the army or any organisation... I'm certain they will be able to help you out eek footinmouth help wink

- You don't have to do anything, really. You can sit around all day and see what is happening around you. Go India, cover it up as meditation and after a couple of days people might start bringing you food... In Australia it's not quite as accepted... you can sit there a very long time without anyone paying attention.

hummmmmmm.... once in a while try to stop, sit back, "smell the roses" so the answers might actually be able to catch up with you one dazy day.. wink

Jai, you have read the Celestine prophecy - isn't everything in there already? What more do you need?

Isn't it like: show me Matrix IV "The Resurrection" wink

You obviously have a very ponderous nature and while I doubt you'll ever find a rock solid answer to these questions, it's still good to think about them all the same because they broaden your perspective smile.

You don't find the answer to this until you are doing it and it feels so right. Experiment and investigate, challenge your weaknesses and build on your strengths. Many people can tell you different values you should hold, two I hold important are acting authentically and with ideals.

- What is the meaning of life?

Mmmh. Rhetorical question which wastes more time than its worth (check out the Hitch Hikers Guide for a great take on this). Life is greater and beyond concepts of meaning.

- Why are we so compelled to 'act'?

Or to use the phrase from The Catcher in the Rye (which you should also read): why are people phoneys? Phoneys are the saddest cases; those who don't act true to themselves, to their feelings, intelligence and compassion. Generally people are phoneys because they are lazy; its easier to act like everyone else. But definitely aspects of society has a role in generating phoneys.

I think Eric Idle said it best

Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad,
Other things just make you swear and curse,
When you're chewing life's gristle,
Don't grumble,
Give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
Always look on the light side of life.

If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten,
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps.
Just purse your lips and whistle.
That's the thing.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
Always look on the right side of life,

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin.
Give the audience a grin.
Enjoy it. It's your last chance, anyhow.
So,...

Always look on the bright side of death,
Just before you draw your terminal breath.

Life's a piece of [censored],
When you look at it.
Life's a laugh and death's a joke it's true.
You'll see it's all a show.
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
Always look on the right side of life.

Always look on the bright side of life!(x7)

My motto is "If life were easy it wouldn't be so fun", the old proverbs are the best i'd say "if life gives you lemons, make lemonade" etc. etc. etc. Basically what im trying to say is everyone has a hard time, everyone struggles, but its not what happens in your life that makes it rubbish, its what you do when the bad things happen that holds the balance on happiness!

Don't just live in the past, don't just live for today, and don't just live for the future, do all 3, learn from mistakes, enjoy life, and plan for the future

Jo - your right about that. I do think alot and i really shouldnt.

Im not asking these questions as a pessimist, im asking them for other peoples feedback. I love hearing what other people think. The more i know, the more knowledge i have to make the right decisions and be less afraid of making them.

Im going to buy those books next pay day Ickle Matt. Thank u for the references. I love reading.

Bills Hicks's take:
"The world is like a ride in an amusement park and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and around and around and it has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud. And it's fun - for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question; is this real? Or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, and they say, "Hey, don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because... this is just a ride."

Like reading? If you're getting too caught up in self-analysis, I'd recommend having a read of The Diceman by Luke Reindhardt (may have mis-spelled his surname), it's funny and dark and offers a great take on psychology gone mad... also about the ways people 'act' and if it can be used to break down barriers.

Yes Jo, it is wonderfully wierd and dark! I've got a couple of friends who occasionally live 'by the dice' at weekends, some of the stuff they get up to scares me a little but then they do have really active, adventurous weekends.

I thought it was kind of relevant to this thread, especially what Jai was saying about people 'acting' and taking on various roles in life.

Also remember the situation you find yourself in is always by choice. If youfeel something, it is because youchoose to feel it, and you cand choose to feel different, and do different. As Spanner said, some decisions are harder than others, but that doesn't mean that the easiest option is the right one. There is no definitive 'right' or 'wrong. I finished studying 6 years ago, and although I am in a profession at the moment I am pretty sure I'm not cut out for,in a country I am not too sure yet that I belong (I moved from South Africa to the UK 5 years ago) I am aware that at anytime I can change it.I am here through choice. I currently work a job I dislike to fund a much needed decision inviting change a year ago.

Remember too, that your choices are half chance too. biggrin

Good luck kiddo.

Working in summer camps in the USA. They work you hard but you get to meet other camp leaders. Some are better than others, less exploitative, better activities and kids. Try getting into French Woods Festival of the Arts camp in New York state. It is brilliant: hasa fantastic circus program and love Aussies. My boy, Knoxious, went there when he was 18. It was one of the things that led to him having a successful career as a perfomer, including FlameOz. That is probably a recommendation. wink

A few brief thoughts...

The most important thing to remember in life is that it's totally unlike school. There's no curriculum, no marking scheme, no final assesment and no resits. To clarify a little bit:

No curriculum:
The only person who can decide what the meaning of your life is -- or even whether it has one -- is you, so there are no set goals you have to fulfil if you don't want to.

No marking scheme:
Because of this, the only person who can look back at your life and decide whether it's going ok is you -- noone else knows your likes, dislikes, goals or what your decisions were based on, so noone else's opinion matters unless you decide it does. Bear in mind, though, that you will remember everything you do, so try to impress your future self wink.

No final assesment and no resits:
Probably the hardest thing to accept about life is that you'll never know which decisions were the right ones. More importantly, you don;t get to go back and try again. You just have to do your best with the knowledge you have to hand then move on to work with the outcomes whether they're good, bad or unclear. For example, would I be happier if I'd moved to Nottingham instead of London? Maybe, maybe not -- I'll never know, so I'm focusing on enjoying myself here biggrin.

...of course you shouldn't necessarily take my advice! This outlook works well for me (at the moment I'm doing exactly what I want and am learning to love the rather ugly city I find myself in), but perhaps there's something better for you out there. Life is trial and error, especially just after leaving school. All I can suggest is to try new things, meet new people and see what sticks. All aspects of life (including the job market!) are much more flexible than people seem to expect, so don't be afraid to explore before picking your next direction.

I like this thread-brings back memories of graduating high school. As well, those same feelings come up again when you finish university-which seems like an abyss-something you'll never get out of. I'm finishing up grad school now after having worked a few years after uni, and am still evaluating life. I see nothing wrong with questioning life and yourself. Although, I feel like I'm always in one of two places. Either I'm bored and irritated with my situation, thus I start thinking of ways to get out of that... OR I do something about it, but then start stressing about life because I'm so busy I can never do things for me. I struggle with balance in life. I know I like to be challenged, but sometimes I put too much on my plate (ie. working full-time, going to teacher's college full-time, owning 5 pets, taking a correspondence course etc...).

I'm really interested in Into The Wild right now-I've seen the movie, and am reading the book. What a fellow that Alex Supertramp was.
