I watched a program last night about apple trees and the life style that has grown up around these trees. There was a bit about wassailing at the end of the program and it got me wondering if any of you do this. It looked like great fun and as winter is so long and has a habit of making me feel really down I wondered if any of you have any apple orchards that you wouldn't mind us arranging a wassailing meet in. Kind of a way of having something to look forward to in an otherwise dark and miserable January.

It would involve drinking lots of cider too biggrin

I've sung some Brillian Wassailing songs in times gone by- never actually on doorsteps, but in concerts and the like. All very jovial and spirited biggrin

I do, if I can I tend to hold a wassail party in January. If I don't have an apple tree to hand we drink wassail (basically mulled cider) and put some on whatever fruit tree/veggie patch happens to be handy.

Cool idea Kach, maybe I'll have to have my own wassailing party. We could lead people by tourch light to a local allotment or something and do the fertility blessing with cider there biggrin

I thought Wassailing was meant to happen on the 12th night (jan 6th or 17th Jan depending on which calender you follow)

Ah, I only just read this bit: In cider-producing areas of England, such as the West Country, wassailing also referred to drinking (and singing) the health of trees in the hopes that they might better thrive. Sounds great (with no hesitation)

Ok So I haven't found an orchard we can Wassail in, but I am thinking about planting a couple of trees in my now cleared garden... an apple and something else. We could have a small bonfire and a bit of a wassailing do to wish them well and encourage them to be fruitful.

Which weekend is best for people Jan 6-7 or the 13-14?
