This one is for all the geeky and anal people like me out there who love making completely meaningless lists of stuff they like. I reckon you can tell a lot about a persons personality from the type of stuff they like. I love being obsessive about details and getting really involved in in-depth discussions about minor details in movies (don't even get me started on lord of the rings) wink

The best part is, if we spot a post by someone with a similar list that has a film that we haven't seen, it's a fair bet we'll like it. But think carefully: there are a lot of films. Choose the ones that have affected you, influenced you or touched you the most over the years. And if it's a film no-one will ever have heard of, give a very brief outline!

Thread #2 will be albums, #3 will be sexual positions wink

So without further ado, here are my top 10 movies.

1. A Flight of Dragons (animation from 1982 feat. James Earl Jones. As a kid, I loved it as a magical adventure. As an adult, it's fascinating allegory on science vs. religion, and how ultimately they're two sides of the same coin)

2. Lord of the Rings trilogy. (Blinding soundtrack, amazing visuals, totally nailed Tolkiens world. Geek alert!)

3. Pi (Again, great soundtrack feat Aphex Twin etc, great cinematography, fantastic concept about patterns emerging in nature)

4. Evil Dead 2 (Bruce Campbell's best ever performance, so funny but so ingenious at the same time)

5. Shawshank redemption (One of the most uplifting films ever made. An inspiration, and one of the best demonstrations of why never to let go of hope I've ever seen)

6. Donnie Darko (As a mood piece this works like no other film I've ever seen. Brilliantly ambiguous, Jake Gylenhall is blinding as donnie)

7. Akira (Best anime ever. Full stop. Needs repeated viewings, but the denoument is mind-blowing if you understand what happened!)

8. Aliens (One of the great action movies. The Alien queen fight at the end is absolute cinema legend)

9. Hero (purely for the artistry that went into the cinematography and choreograhpy, especially the scene where the two heros are fighting over the lake. Easily the most beautiful film I've seen, and I loved the concept of even the bad guy is trying to do something good)

10. City of God (pure realism. One of the most authentic films I've seen in ages, and incredibly shocking and moving. Great film)

I may edit this list at some point when I think of movies I've missed that should have been there.

Feel free to rip the censored out of me for being sad. I'm just interested in what other people like, I might learn something....

I liked Kill Bill Volume One, volume two though I thought was a little boring. The only problem I had with volume one was the fight between Black Momba and O-Ren. I thought they concentrated far too much on the fight in the tea house and sacrifised the better fight between Uma and Lucy Lu, I mean the audiance is going to be routing more for a fight between a liked actress than 40 or so random extras

As in the guy from Third Rock From The Sun?

I'm laughing because I've always quite fancied him, and when i met Burning Dan thought they looked alike... ubblol

Small world indeed! rolleyes ubblol

*----------More Spoilers Follow for those who haven't seen Kill Bill-------------------------*

I agree the first one is better than the second. O-Ren is a powerful character, and the scenes in Japan are all good. The slice of anime is good too.

Maybe I was a bit harsh on it.

My main problem was I found the inconsistency unsettling. In between jokey Stock Characters like Pai-Mei (who is definitely a bonus) and film references like the hand punching out of the grave in a reference to the Zombie Genre were serious scenes such as the reunion of the Bride and her daughter.

In short I found the mixture of action, comedy and drama hard to swallow.

What was that film called where a frenchman gets chased by a swat team, and has to help get a girl out of the way and gets totoally messed up doing it? for some reason I used to think it was called Amelie, lol i know now im quite clearly wrong.

I saw the second half of Dangerous Liaisons a few days ago and loved it. Thats allways been my favourite genre of film, Lords, Ladys, frilly shirts, velvet coats, snide insults and deliciously malicious banter!

If you watch it it hasnt aged at all, it was done in 1988 but you wouldnt notice. It even had to my surprise a very young Uma Therman in it.

Let's just say that I'm no stranger to girls who are maybe a little rough around the edges. Chicks who are carrying a good few ounces around the tummy and rear end have also been known to catch my eye. Perhaps not "questionable" as such, but it can bring out the sneering comedian in a lot of people.

My ideal partner would be someone who is prepared to do all of the ironing and clothes washing. I would quite happily do all the cooking and cleaning. Hairy arms are acceptable. Hairy legs not so.

I haven't seen Shallow Hal - like I said, I usually prefer old films. Spaghetti westerns, Marx brothers comedies, Hitchcock. Of course, there are newer films which simply have to be seen; I like Tarantino stuff and I quite liked the "Passion of the Christ".

Watched "A Scanner Darkly" the other day. WOW. eek Absolutely amazing movie, I loved the way it's filmed using real people, then cell shaded to make it look like animation. I thought it would come across as pretentious, but given the subject matter of the film (an undercover cop's progressive decline into paranoid delusion ubbloco) I think it manages to create a tangible atmosphere of detachment from reality that really enhances the story. Twists all over the place, and the ending is great as well. Anyone else seen it?

Also, has anyone seen Pan's Labyrinth yet? I really wanna see that, it looks lush...

The term is 'Rotoscoping' - animation tracing over live-action. Cell-shaing is colouring a 3-D Polygon character or object in a way to make it look like a 2-D character (like Jet-Set Radio the game). tongue

As long as you know it's less fantasy-based than the marketing would have you believe. It's more 80% Reality 20% Fantasy. And VERY brutal...

ouch, 2 of my votes for some of the worst films ever (starship troopers 2, and once upon a time in mexico) have hit peoples big list...

some favourites of mine, no particular order (might come back and write more of a description of why later) :

Akira,

Alien,

Zatôichi (the 2003 Takeshi Kitano version),

The Blade (Tsui Hark remake of one armed swordsman),

Once Upon a time in China,

American Beauty,

Seven Samurai,

Mibu gishi den,

Perfect Blue (very disturbing, also really interesting as to quite how much it made me forget it's animation and just be totally engrossed in the tale, despite being the huge anime fan I am I found it more noticeable in this than any other).

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is lovely

Hero is absolutely beautifully done too.

Battle Royal ('directors cut' with additions near the end spoils it, and sequel sucked hard though).

Tampopo.

Escaflowne (series is better, most psycho baddie ever smile)

Pretty much anything by Studio Ghibli is utterly awesome, I've seen their official movie productions except the new Tales of Earthsea.

Arg, I've hit the point I've really started to just blank out, and my collection is 100 miles away to remind me frown

I'm afraid I really didn't think much to kill bill, and the sequel somehow managed to bore me to tears and really annoy me at the same time. I've seen way too many of the originals Tarantino was attempting to mimic, and didn't take to his version at all, as much as he threw glossy production at it.

Ichi the killer is just utterly, utterly horrible.

Yeah Kill Bill 2 was dull as hell... But with Vol. 1 I think I unconsiously adhere to the 'idolising kick-ass chicks' stereotype of most gay men... tongue

Stuff like Crouching Tiger and Hero I was raised on as a wee nipper so didn't really grab my attention like it did with most western auidences...

One recent film I've seen was a film called 'Hellbent' a gay slasher film which I was expecting to be cheap, trashy and appauling turned out to be (whilst still being cheap) surprisingly well written and acted and had more character development and tragedy than most str-8 slasher films!

I stand corrected! smile

I heard Pan's Labyrinth was dark, so I wasn't expecting David Bowie with horns or anything! wink It has brilliant reviews and it sounds like the sort of thing I usually go for.

Watched "Crank" the other day, can't decide if it was completely braindead shite or actually a work of genius. Or both. There is a very fine line between genius and insanity sometimes. wink
