What happens if you put a pack of Mentos mints into a bottle of Diet Coke?

biggrin

Apparently Coke are quite angry about it because it doesn't suit their company concept ubblol

Now exactly how many hours do you think this gentleman spent on this before he got the whole thing right?

I'm thinking at least 100.

dunno, Doc, surely Coke can't complain about them if they buy that much material to play with?

at first i thought it was going to be a vat of 200 litres of coke, with the 500 mentos thrown in, but that could be a little too explosive

RR, I'm not sure it would work that well. Mentos aren't a reactant in a reaction, they're a catalyst. And that's important in this case, although NYC could explain it better.

See, in a sealed bottle of soda there's an equilibrium between the CO2 dissolved in the soda and the CO2 pressure in the air inside the bottle. That is to say that CO2 molecules dissolved in the soda are in about as much a hurry to bubble out as CO2 molecules floating in the air in the bottle are eager to dissolve. When you open the bottle, the CO2 in the air rushes out and that means that less CO2 in the air is trying to get in, while the same amount of CO2 is getting out, which results in a spectacularly rapid release of bubbles.

Mentos, whether they act as a surfactant or a nucleation site, are catalysts. They can't force the reaction in one direction or the other, but they can speed the rate at which the reaction reaches equilibrium. So if you sealed the bottle, you wouldn't have a bomb.

I guess "Search" doesn't work in the video threads. (No seriously, I tried it... it doesn't.)

I posted that vid... and then UCOF posted this one...

I'm sure I could explain it better. And perhaps even correctly.

The menthos are absolutely, positively not a catalyst.

OK, one more paragraph on just how wrong Lightning is and then I promise I'll explain what is actually happening.

ubbangel

Right... Firstly and foremost, there is no chemical reaction occuring. It is a physical reaction, in this case, a phase change. Much like melting ice is a physical reaction, H2O (s) ==> H2O (l) any reaction resulting in the same chemicals as you started would not be a chemical reaction. Since it's not a chemical reaction the term 'catalyst' would be inappropriate.

You've actually got an equilibrium in a sealed bottle of soda.

CO2 (aq) <==> CO2 (g)
(the dissolved CO2) <==> (the gaseous CO2 at the top of the bottle)

So that sits at a happy equilibrium until some meany opens the bottle. Now you've destroyed the equilibrium since you no longer have a closed system. Since the pressure is reduced the equilibrium will slowly shift to the right, the side with more gas. [Insert lesson on Le Chatlier's Principle here.]

OK, now while this slow shift to the right is occuring some geek decides to add a menthos... or any solute. The menthos dissolve which essentially makes it impossible for the reaction to go backwards (since the solution can't dissolve the gas because it's already dissolving the menthos.) In any case, the dissolving menthos forces the dissolved CO2 out of the bottle.

Swoooooooch!

You can try this on a much smaller level by dropping a grain of salt into your cup of soda. The grain will dissolve leaving what looks like a meteor trail to the bottom of the glass as the CO2 around it is forced from solution.

Oh, and there's a really easy way to see if something is a catalyst.... If it's used up AT ALL in the reaction, it is NOT a catalyst. Theoretically (and almost practically) most catalysts will end up with the same amount of stuff at the end of a reaction.

In the human body, catalysts are called "enzymes" and they are certainly not used up with each reaction. Maybe Lightning's High School Biology teacher will cover that next week. wink

NYC, very nice indeed.

But your explanation says that the mentos make it impossible for the phase change to proceed to the left. Isn't that illegal under LeChatlier?

Say hi to LeChatlier for me on your way back to the books, K?

Never said it was impossible. I said it was "essentially" impossible. [Of course some will be able to go backwards but we actual scientists say that the equilbrium "shifts to the right" even though the left reaction still works well.] I used the word "essentially" to dumb it down to your level. Sorry that it confused you. Most of my explanation was dumbed down, that's why you understood it.
