'lo, am new and somewhat unco-ordinated.
A lovely friend is doing their best ot teach me but I'm a slow study.. they are very patient.
Any suggestions on how not to wrap poi round wrists when going behind head are always wlecome as are how to learn to do things above head when you have very stiff shoulders...

It could boil down to your grip, or just brushing up technique. Regarding grip, I often wrap the poi around my hand or index and middle fingers, gripping the string/chain/sock with my index and thumbs. Doesn't tangle as often I find.. unless you want them too of course..

Welcome to HoP Crystal. Ry's got it down when he says it's all in the grip. It really is a personal thing though, my lead has to be coming from my nuckels (normally my middle finger) to make sure my planes are correct.
Just keep on practicing and you'll find the sweet spot where everything works correctly.
