Upwardly gothic

Its what we have been saying for years although i would tend to agree with the statemnt that we are more class less than middle class....

the thing is though do you think anyone will actually listen? I get more than fed up with being labeled as the drop outs who amount to nothing as is my Son. and the shock on peoples faces they find out i used to alot of work with social services!!!

Thanks Pen for showing me this hug hug

I read an article in the paper about this the other day. And also I read in a magazine's agony aunt column that a worried mother had writted in about her son using her eye-liner and turning Goth!
The agony aunt replied that she should be pleased, because stats show he'll be better at school, think deeply, and be interested in the arts!
hurrah! Better than finding him with a burberry cap, hey?! tongue

From Wikipedia:

Chav is a slang term which has been in wide use throughout the United Kingdom since 2004. It refers to a subcultural stereotype of a person with fashions such as flashy "bling" jewellery and counterfeit designer clothes or sportswear, an uneducated, uncultured, impoverished background, a tendency to congregate around places such as fast-food outlets, bus stops, or other shopping areas, and a culture of antisocial behavior.

It's always about labels in today's society and that exactly why I dress the way I do, I don't want to fit into other people's stereotypes

erm, you dress like every other goth because you're trying to be different? confused

I would have thought that research in to any sub-culture will show that they "are likely to grow up to be doctors, lawyers or architects".

I'm not in any saying i don't like goths or anything - I just don't see that this is news at all. Goths are "quite a peaceful lot"? Well so is everyone really, arn't they?

perhaps that Goth does dress like that so they don't fit in with how they are supposed to look.... ie in the way of the fashions and how the media and marketiers say they should.

go out on a friday and saturday night and you can be sure the trouble doesn't come from the alternative clubs and pubs.... unless others have come into the place to cause trouble. which they do.
for Years 'Chavs' have been seen as the 'norm' of how people are supposed to look, act, even down to the places they go its all laid out.
it just makes a change not being labeled as social drop outs, or those who are going to amount to nothing just because we do not to fit in and hopefuly people will listen to the study and make them think in a different way.
hell even if it just makes some of them think it will be a bonus. there are tonnes of kids out there who at the mention of buying Black their parents go into a state of shock .... this may actually make a case for them in making an educated argument against their narrow minded parents who know no different

that made me laugh out loud.

As far as I'm concerned everyone is the sum of their influences. I am influenced by Steve Vai and have some pretty weird outfits and guitars to match. Add to that my love of RPGs and various other geeky things and I'd say I'm a rather unique dresser but I still get lumped into the goth catagory. Meh, such is life

I'm going to offend some people. Sorry.

I haven't read the article. but i get the general gist of what it says, and i'm going to agree with Sym partially, but i'm not going to be nice about it...

Goth's sh*t me.

They're not any less likely, or any more likely for that matter to grow up to be doctors and lawyers than anyone else. Though i will conceede most of them are more artsy than other people.

They haven't been picked on any more or any less than anyone else has in school, kids are cruel.

Generally, i find that goths lack self confidence and have this delusion that they're oh-so-differant and that the world is against them. For some reason sitting in the dark wearing black and with very unflattering black makeup seems to make them feel worse about them selves which in some sick way makes them feel better.

I'm sorry, but you can rebel all you want, there isn't any way you're "supposed to look" and everyone doesn't hate you, you're not that important, and you don't know everyone anyway. Most people that see you in the street will just think "wow s/he looks silly" and go about their business, they don't care how you want to dress, as long as you think you look good, do what you want.

I have the self confidence to wear what i think looks good, wether it's fashionalbe or not, if people don't like it that's their business, and if they do, good for them too. What does it matter?

But don't beat me up over my uneducated view, i was a goth once too.

Foxy doxy,
I think this is a bit wrong:

The goths I know are confident, really fun and outgoing! My friend Chelle does kickboxing and is probably the funniest person I know, she's studying to become a psychologist and is in no way thinking she is "different" or that the world is against her.
I think you're getting confused with little emo kids who go about with their black eyeliner sulking.
The goths i know kick ass.
biggrin

i think it's more of a teenage angst thing than a goth thing. chav teenagers take it out by hitting stuff, goths do it by wearing black.

most of us had a spot of teenage blues and (most of us!) grew out of it. i wear what i like even now, which sometimes involves dressing like a goth, mostly cause i just feel like it.

people are really quick to label, but often, strangely, quicker to label themselves. goths as much or little as anyone are trying to fit in to a box and be accepted by the world. by which i mean.. 'you are all individualds!' ('yes, we are all individuals...)'. well, that's my opinion anyway.

I had a dream that my friend had a
strong-bad pop up book,
it was the book of my dreams.

i'm not getting goths and emo kids confused, though they take similar attitudes... emo kids are usually the trendies who don't really have a problem with anything they just think it's cool to cry and sulk, don't even get me started on those little tw*ts ruining the punk scene.

I guenuinely think your friend's exception to the rule, cuz i still have friends who're goth and you'd think by 23 they'd get over it... in small doses they're genuinely nice people but their "everyone hates me and the world owes me" attitude really gets up me alot of the time...

EDIT: anyway, i don't want to argue. I was just stating that in my experiance goths are mainly just people who have this skewed vision of the world where they think that people actually give a toss, and that it doesn't in the least surprise me that they're just as likely to grow up "normal" as everyone else, despite the fact that they think wearing black will solve all their problems.

I must be in the minority there then... I'll look at most goths and go "wow, that's hot!" unless it's one of those people who well... I'd hope to never see again. But 9.5 times out of 10 I'll pass a goth and have to have a second look... or 3.
As for the females, even most of them look pretty good, if not hot (in a completely heterosexual way)

Must say though, that some people annoy me so much. For some reason I've been called a goth many times, because I like darker clothing. I'm not goth.

Then there's a girl who hangs out with my group of friends who was bagging goths the other day, about how they're so stupid and retarded (yuck I hate that word) to wear black, especially in the heat of summer, and just cut shreds throught them, I tried not to retaliate, simply saying to one of my friends "gee, wonder if that makes me stupid?" She annoyed us both so much though, and this other friend of mine is used to people like that and their views apparently.. but then, she is really good mates with Kermit

well ok, whatever you think they look like, it doesn't make you care about their issues any does it? like i said as long as you think you look good, do what you want, i know i do. It's just this attitude that they think they're differant that's the issue beng brought up here.

There's this article here going "hey wow, people who think dressing in black leather, lace and velvet and wearing black lipstick is cool/ makes them differant/ will make people take any notice of whatever issues they have are just as likely to grow up and have jobs as that "normal" chick over there in the sneakers jeans and t-shirt with a donkey on it, what're the odds of that?"

and i'm just saying "pretty good actually, who cares?"

Like Tao said people have angst and grow out of it... i'm just talking about the ones that don't that annoy me. if you grow out of your angsty attitude and still wanna wear velvet and lace fine, but chances are once you've grown out of the attitude you'll probably (though not definately) lose the makeup and introduce a bit of colour and maybe stop wearing stockings on your arms even if you keep the basic style the same (cuz you can only wear black for so long before you start feeling like a poser tongue) clothes are just clothes.

yeah i don't even know if that made sence... ok Summary:

Goths are just people, wearing black and being angsty doesn't make them any differant to other kids, and thus i am not at all suprised that they're gonna grow up to be just as employable as any other kid. (presuming they don't go to job interviews dressed like that, cuz that will probably make them come accross as immature and angsty.)

The End.

Oh... and i did tell you i was gonna offend people and that i was sorry for that, And (capital for emphasis) that it wasn't an uneducated opinion. It is however my opinion. And only an opinion, thus it can't be "wrong" as such, Jo... nor does it make it right. It's just an opinion. I've defended it, and i shall say no more on the topic... probably.

Thing is, what issues do they have exactly? they're normal people, are their issues any different to everyone else's?

Do all goths think they are any different to anyone else? Most people think they are different and better than everyone else.

I never said I agreed with the odds that goths are likely to grow up to be any better than anyone else, because they are normal people.

I was only talking about the line that you said about them all looking silly.

Maybe I read into that wrong, I don't know
