"Ohio Student Dies During [Firechair] Truck Stunt" & Other Kids Set Their Friends On Fire
(title edited by FireMike)
by AP, published on CNN.com

TIFFIN, Ohio (AP) - A college freshman died after falling from a moving pickup truck in a stunt possibly inspired by the television show ``Jackass,'' authorities said.

Adam Ports, 18, and three fellow students at Tiffin University set a chair on fire and threw it from the back of a moving truck Tuesday night while friends photographed the stunt. Ports then jumped or fell from the truck as it sped away on a country road, officials said.

He died Wednesday from head injuries.

``They were trying to create some type of stunt like they have on the TV show 'Jackass,''' Seneca County sheriff's Sgt. Brian Hescht wrote in a report. The now-defunct MTV show of crude stunts was made into a movie that debuted last month.

MTV/Paramount spokeswoman Marnie Malter denied that the show was to blame.

``The police report that was filed makes it clear that this incident has no connection to any stunts performed on the 'Jackass' television show or film,'' Malter said.

``Jackass'' has drawn criticism in the past for allegedly encouraging dangerous behavior.

After one show showed a man in a fireproof suit being set ablaze on a grill, a few imitators were burned trying to perform their own variations.

A New Hampshire boy said he was inspired by ``Jackass'' to ignite lamp oil on a 12-year-old friend, who suffered burns over 30 percent of his body last year. Last week, a 15-year-boy in Seattle suffered severe burns after he and his friends soaked his T-shirt in alcohol and lit it on fire. Officers said they were attempting a ``Jackass'' stunt.

hmmmmm

That`s a terrible thing but I think people are far too quick to blame T.V shows/music for such tragedies these days.
P.S. Do any UK people have any views on the current firefighter strike?

I guess its just easier for most people to blame TV/movies/music for the stupid stunts that kids pull, rather than the parents of these kids who never sat their children down to say that its wrong to set people on fire.

People are nuts.

Stupid is as stupid does. They don't need a TV show to make them dumb. Inspire them, maybe, but not to make them dumb. They'd have gotten themselves killed another way without "Jackass."

This is real flesh, this is real fire, this is real stupid??

I think those kids got what they deserved, stupid is as stupid does.

There is a difference between a fire accident and what those guys did.

i got some.........****in ass holes like i pay enough taxes to keep those cheeky *******s in a job, why be greedy and as for such a big pay rise that makes me sick.
Yesterday i got a call from my troupe to see if i could fill in for a performer. having made the split second decission to go i was well up for it, so off we went to the hippodrome @ leicester Sq London. Well motorway signs are all flashing firefighter strikes drive with extra care. erm remember seeing these before. so gets to the club and sets every thing up we need for the night. And were sat there re working the fire shows to fit me in but also we have to tone it down because of this strike... understandably i might add...so me no gets to fire breathe. oh well next week maybe. spent half the show laughing at the bouncers stood there with extinguishers poor blokes.. we stil made 2 nice fire shows even if there wasnt much of it...oh well
point to this thats just how it affected us last night.. but my personal feelings, i dont agree with such a big pay rise! end off.

sorry for change in topic!

A slightly different viewpoint form most (as usual).

Is it the 3 year olds fault that she pulled the jug of boiling water down and burned herself into a monster? Was she just being stupid?

I think most people will say she "didn't know any better, she's just kid".

Well, at what stage have people grown out of this "didn't know any better" stage? Some people never grow out of it.

I blame both. The TV show itself because human beings love to mimic. Why else do grown men and women repeat phrases out of movies, or get inspired by extreme videos to start snowboarding or white-water rafting?

There's not much difference between someone who doens't know anythin about snowboarding and someone who doesn't know anything about fire.

The only difference is, when a snow boarder falls off a cliff because he didn't know how to stop it is called an accident, and when someone else sets themself on fire it is called stupid.

I don't like to admit it, but the chances are that if that show wasn't made, some people may be alive today who aren't.

I think that TV shows that show dangerous stunts need to include as much information as possible in the show so that people have a higher chance of being informed.

Like explaining what's involved in the cost and mehtod of making the firesuit, how the guy is to breathe, how long it will last and fuels that should NOT be used.

There is no way to stop people being "stupid", but the more info they have, the more chance they will understand the dangers and not attempt it, or get injured less seriously.

I dont remember the words exactly but Eminem said something along the lines of... can music make you load a gun and cock it too, so next time you shoot someone blame me and I'll get sued.

Anyhow, people may be dumb enough to copy what they do on TV or in music but the show and the music will never make anyone do anything.

I disagree Raymund.

I agree that that show is unlikely to make you or I or most people on this board go out and do something.

However, there are those in the world, and there are more of them than you think, who do copy what they see on music videos, TV and the movies.

Copycat criminals, especially the snipers and murderers are a perfect example. They have happened in the past and they will happen again.

I think every fire-performer on this site saw someone spinning fire around them at some point and thought "Hey, I want to do that!".

Most people in the world would call spinning fire around your body just as stupid as trying to set yourself alight.

so, suddenly, the pastime of most of us here on HoP fits into the definition of "stupid" but most people.

Sometimes it's hard to see that just because WE wouldn't be affected by something, that doesn't mean NO-ONE else will be affected...

I don't want this thread to turn into a slanging match, but I would like poeple to understand that everyone is affected by things in different ways...

True, seeing people do some interesting things on TV does lead to people doing like things.

I mean I worked on doing inline extream skating for quite some time, fueld by seeing things like the X Games. Now when I fell and irked my neck real bad, did I blame the people on TV? No! It isnt their fault that I went out had a ton of fun and ended up hurting myself, even though I was wearing protective gear.

Just like you cant blame the NFL for all the highschool football injuries that happen every year.

Couple of weeks ago, after partying all nite, too many drugs.. All sketched out, went to see the JackAss movie with a group of 5 people. I'm 24 years old, and I was the youngest in the group. The oldest being 30+.

Upon exiting the movie the oldest guy in the group barreled across the street and tried to jump over a garbage can, tripping and then landing on his head.

After recovering he decided to use a large PVC tube to try to pole-vault into a garbage dumpster.

After recovering we went back to the apartment, where he decided to slide down the stairs on a sheet of metal.

After recovering and cleaning some of the blood off they decided to drop pumpkins onto his back from 2 stories up.

After recovering they decided to try the sliding down the stairs stunt again only to fly even farther and into the ground.

After recovering they finally came upstairs, after I persuaded them into joining me for a spliff. After a short discussion about breakdancing they decided to see if one of them could do a headspin by tying his legs to the ceiling fan (which for some reason was okay with the owner of the apartment).

Regardless of whether this was an isolated incident or an indication of things to come, I must say that in my opinion JackAss inspires stupidity in a way that no other movie has ever done before.

The competition for the Darwin Awards will be quite steep this year.

I think most people will say she "didn't know any better, she's just kid".

Well, at what stage have people grown out of this "didn't know any better" stage? Some people never grow out of it.

Charles, part of it is standard mental development. For example, show a small child two containers with equal volumes of liquid in them and the child will claim that the taller, skinnier container holds more fluid, even if she sees you poor the contents of one container into the other.

I expect that at age 8 or 9, most human beings can figure out that it's probably not a terribly swift idea to soak your shirt in something flammable and light it.

Similarly, at age 18 (or 12 or 13 for that matter), I expect a human being to be able figure out that standing in the open bed of a pick-up truck at speed while holding a flaming chair is not the world's sharpest idea, either.

Before the advent of lawyers and the "blessings" of civilization, childhood foolishness was balanced by parental attentiveness. The balance was that parental attentiveness fell off with the age of the child, such that older children were naturally assumed to require less attention than younger children because older children had better judgement. If a parent was too under-attentive, the parent's offspring would be more likely to get killed, thus reducing the parent's reproductive success. Similarly, if a child failed to mature in such a manner as to match the expectations of the parent, the child was more likely to get killed, again weeding that behavior out of the gene pool.

Darwin is a tough bastard.

Such variations still happen today. But rather than accepting that this person was simply too stupid, we try to blame it on a TV show.

It's like that southern-comedian skit: "Here's your sign." He feels that stupid people should wear a sign saying so.
"I pulled into a service station with a flat tire. The attendant asked me if my tire went flat. I replied, Nope, those other three just swelled right up on me. Here's your sign."

Stupid people are the reason that there are warning labels on products.
Preparation H: Do not eat.
Can you see the letter to that company? "Dear Preparation H. I ate this whole tube and it did nothing for my hemeroids."

I would think that at the age of 12 one knows that fire hurts and you'll get burned. I remember knowing this. I didn't know that my BMX couldn't go 30 MPH down a hill. But I knew that soaking myself in fuel and lighting it would probably kill me.
BTW, the BMX wasn't designed to go racing down a big hill. It went out of control and I got some road rash on my arms and one leg.

The people that do these stunts aren't accidentally doing them. They take time to set them up. Getting fuel, etc.
The snow boarder probably didn't know that there was a cliff there. If he said, I could survive that fall, that'd be a stupid move.

FYI: I am not Pele. If you wish to reply to me and use a short version of my name, use: PWB.
