This may just be me having a brain fart but I was laying in bed last night listening to my phone doing a death knell bing bong that tells me I need to charge it and it got me to thinking about how to recharge things in a more environmentally friendly way.

That led me on to thinking about solar power, wind power and then dynamos. It struck me that when we spin things we exert a lot of energy. Could we in some way harness that energy to recharge stuff? You get lights on bikes that are run on pedal power, how about charging batteries whilst you play with a staff or poi? I used to have a self winding watch that used the movement of your arm to rewind the spring. There are wind up clocks, why not self winding glow toys? Could that not work in hoops, poi, staff......?

Probably a crazy idea, but you know what it's like when your head refuses to turn off and let you sleep. It comes up with all kinds of silly stuff. Well mine does. ubblol

One possibly idea, although this wouldn't generate much power, would be to insert smallish (~5mm diam) holes into the sides of poi, which are over a small windmilll, allowing air to move through the poi during spinning, turning the windmill. Tiny dynamos.

That's stupid, huh?

didn't we have this idea down in clapham?

magnets for one.

better, dynamos at the handles, so the circle of the poi makes the dynamo turn, which has wires running up to the poi head, which charges the batteries / leds / mp3s etc.

Ide buy into that, it would at least make the batterys last longer wouldnt it?

Hmmm...well, the way i spin i wouldn't actually get the dynamo to spin/charge because i don't spin the poi whilst holding my hand statically so the poi would 'spin' the dyno...my hands flow with the poi more so it's more my wrists acting as the pivot rather than the poi handle and the rest of the poi...

nice idea though! biggrin

actually, it might be possible to use flywheels within the poi to convert & store some of the energy from spinning. though a problem with that i can think of is that the flywheels would produce some sort of gyroscopic effect that would have the potential to mess with the poi spinning...
