I just received my first wicks (!!!). I held them in my hands for what seemed like hours till finally I put them on my chains unlit and twirled them, so as to be intimate with them and know how they react. My "first burn" is this friday, and I am overjoyed, and scared as hell. I've arranged a safety, I've taken the pre-cautions...but I'm still nervous. I've never posted on the forums before, so, I suppose I should introduce myself.

I started poi six months ago. Practicing dillengently for several hours each night. I started out with a home-made set bought from Ace Hardware parts with glow-sticks attached to the ends. I bought a proper poi set from HOP, and now I have wicks. I saw poi on the Discovery Channel, and went so far as to put it on my TiVo. I watched it for hours on end, till I finally said - "I HAVE to do that". With my poi set, I got the C.O.L DVD, and I still watch it several times. The moves of many of you on there have inspired me, and I hope to eventually be as POIsed as you.

The hindus have Yoga, the Chinese have tai-chi and we have poi. On a deeper level...poi has changed me since I first saw it on the Discovery Channel. I used to be a raging alchoholic, suicidal and thinking life held nothing for me. Depression had overcome, and poi saved me. Two years of therapy couldn't do with six months with this art has done and...well...I'M READY TO BURN!!!

This has been a spiritual and personal journey. Some of you I've e-mailed, I thank-you for your guidance. To the rest of you, I humbly ask your guidance over the next several days. Any final tidbits, any final pieces of advice? Share your "first burn" stories as well!!!

I totally know what you're saying, poi is very uplifting, so is staff, but I get annoyed with staff as i tend to drop it- alot!

Welcome! wave
My first burn is still fresh in my head. I advise you practice lots with your virgin fire heads, shortening them if you feel the need, til you're comfortable with them. wear natural fibres then it dont matter if you hit your clothing now and then!

Always use "so's your face" and "only on Tuesdays" in as many conversations possible
