Currently, when looking through the main forum index, where the lastest post in each section is shown, i've noticed that some threads are not displaying the correct title.

For example, a thread titled as 'CoL 2005: what do you think?' (appropriately so,since the thread is about opinions of COL); is currently showing in the main index as

'Re: Vegemite ROCKS!'

this is not the only thread where this seems to be happening; does anyone know what's going on here?

It is a forum guideline that all thread titles be meaningful and relevant, so it would be good if this could be sorted out as, anyone clicking on those particular thread title is going to be dissapointed as to its content.

It happened in a thread in SD as well.

Methinks a vegemite fanatic is running around changing the Re: line to £Vegemite ROCKS" (poor deluded fool wink )

Guys, that kinda thing is really reserved fo social chat... It just makes things unhelpful anywhere else.

The existance of flamethrowers says that someone, somewhere, at sometime said "I need to set that thing on fire, but it's too far away."

It's the post subject thread that the latest person in the thread is adding to his/her post that shows up, not the thread's title. Or at least that's what showing up on the thing I'm looking at. It's a problem with the software (I think), not the users of it.

The way to change it is to preview a new post, then re-edit it. This changes the title displayed on the main index (as the latest post in each forum section) and at the top of every new page.

To be honest, its no real biggie, it just means that people will get confused slightly at the index shrug

It's no littlie either smile

- to intentionally change a thread title in that way seems to me to be out-of-order as-

1. it's in clear breach of the forum guidelines that ask members to use meaningful and relevant titles for threads

2. it's disrespectful to those who start the thread and do go to the trouble of following those guidelines by choosing a meaningful title

3. it's common here on HOP to jump on newbies who ask questions on colouring fire etc, by, sometimes rudely, telling them to do a search (I personally disagree with that kind of rudeness), so I don't see why it should be acceptable to change meaningful thread titles into something confusing and irrelevant

4. in this particular case, the thread is about HOPs new COL DVD, and the content is very complimentary about that DVD- quite conceivably the original thread title could draw interest from people wandering into the HOP forum title page, possibly leading to some extra sales that will provide needed funds both to the HOP board and future COLs: the fact that the original title has been replaced with a nonsensical comment about vegemite means that no newbie interested in COL is going to click on it

As FRD says, this kind of stuff is perhaps appropriate in 'chat', eslewhere it's not wanted.

I completely agree Dave.

I find it especially frustrating when I'm at internet cafes and pressed for time or paying by the minute.

Pointless and frustrating. But whilst it's comeup, is vegemite in any way similar to marmite?

That is an astonishingly full and accurate description of the history and uses of Vegemite, however it fails to mention its association with avocado, particularly on toast. Personally I prefer my avocado and toast with Promite.

People who like Vegemite usually find Marmite too sweet and lacking bite. Mimsy goo.

erm I may be wrong but...

I thought that the thread in question was originally in social chat, and im also thinking someone moved it. So im guessing that the title was changed when the thread was in social chat.

No, the thread I'm talking about is the one created recently about COL 2005, and titled 'CoL 2005: what do you think?'.

It is still titled that, however, apparently the title can be hacked by messing around with the 'preview' reply function, and so now it's appearing in the main forum as something about vegemite.

The original vegemite thread is a completely different one.

One in social, and on in the COL forum?

[edit]

Ok that didn't work.

I thought you could post into a thread and then press edit and it came up with your reply but also a box at the top that said "re:whatever the title is" that you could amend. I'm sure I've been able to do this before...maybe it was only in threads I started. Let me go away and try that. I'll report back.

[edit for a 2nd time]

Ok I managed it. If you press the edit button and then allow it to preview you your changes before you post it there is a box with the word "subject" in it that you can change. It won't change the subject on the thread within the forum but it will show up as the title in the over view of the thread on the main page of threads...... did that make sense?

I always knew you could do that and never quite understood why.

Can we just stop that possibility? If we're asking for nonchat threads to stay 'on topic' then there's no reason for the topic to change ... right?

Well, shall we go?

I see how, onewheeldave, that if one were under the impression that the 'last post' text was meant to be the 'last thread' would sometimes be disappointed, frustrated. I have compassion for that. I'd give u a hug but u don't like graemlins, so here's a text hug:

Yes, i agree with youse - if we the purpose of the main index is for convenience, then it would benefit from including too the topic title of the last post. (perhaps it was removed since 99.1337%+ of posts keep the auto generated 're: Staff throws' type subjects)

i miss the feature in the last forum where the day's latest threads are listed chronologcally, now *that* was a time saver!! !! S M I L E S !!
