Hey y'all,

We're about to update our pitifully poor video selection on our website (a 5MB .mov and a 6MB mp4).

Our designer is pushing to use a flash based player she has developed (as the rest of the site is in flash it seems to make sense).

Ideally I would like to have Flash version to stream as well as a large and a small version of each video to dowload as .avi's. What size is good? I was thinking about 10MB and 30MB? Do I need to have 2 versions of the streamable version also?

I was just wondering if any of you had any advice or opinions about this?

Cheers

Dave

you might as well use bigger videos, because everyone has broadband nowadays..

just some thoughts?!

maybe use an mpeg instead of an avi to cut your file size?

decide on your vieo frame size, and then that will tell you what size you are going to have as a download

I'd disagree that most people have broadband these days, but I would say that the people you want to be downloading the videos probably do (agents, companies, people at work etc)

Your sizes are about right - although for "large" I'd happily go up to 50mb (maybe more if the video justified it) - maybe add a "super large" option if your bandwidth allows it smile

I'm not a fan of mpeg's, so personally would stick with avi's. They also seem to compress well...

YAY! New flameoz videos!

And double YAY for downloadable versions. I hate bloody small windows that pop up with "You haven't got the appropriate plugin for this movie" messages in them, they're nowhere near as good as a downloadable movie.

You probably will need two versions of the streamable. I would say either one for modems and one for broadband, or one for 2meg broadband and one for 8 meg broadband.

onfact hell yes to avi's but can you use an mpeg audio codec in them, then they will work universally

Are you paying for bandwidth? It's great to have high res videos up there, but if they constantly get pulled down by hobbiests then it will start to cost you $$$..! Don't know if that's a problem for you, but it might be wise to put the high res avi's in a "secret" directory that you only give out yourselves...

Also consider WMV, which worked really well as a compression for us as some of our source video was pretty cr@ppy and was torn to shreds at the equivallent MPEG file size.

I also agree -- not everyone has broadband! You'll make more hassles for yourself in the long run if you run with that assumption!

Good luck! smile

Hey thanks chaps...

No we don't pay for bandwith... so no problems there smile

I'll see what I can do about the mpeg codec for audio...is that a definite that they'll then play universally?

I'min the same boat as Durbs...not everyone will have broadband but the people we are ultimatly trying to reach do. Also that cuts down on the hobbyists downloads I guess??

thanks again....no screaming fits so I guess we're on the right track...

thanks again!

knox, the mpec codec ofr the audio, will mean taht you are not using a PCM or a windows conversion codec, and as most systems will play mp3's then you will have less compatability issues

when you are encoding teh vid, just switch to the audio section of the settings, and tell it what to use as a codec

i also agree about the bw, as your site is all flash anyways, if you are surfing it, they are comminted to a high brain site anyways

just plase dont have large files to wtach on the site, streaming large files is a pain in eth arse!

*sulk* am having real video problems, i have one mpeg that is 47.7 Mb, but i can't get it on my website, (don't know why, it keeps failing...) and i can't go back to the project to reencode it because the source files got deleted...(see the DivX thread too...) does this mean people generally wouldn't mind downloading that much...? I also have a dvd quality VOB file now... that i don't know what to do with... i don't want to stream, but i'm not sure i know how to make it download... besides just sticking it on my website.... this is my first vid, but it would be useful to know for an extended website project that i'm working on for something else, so if anyone can help, please PM me with advice, it'd make me very happy... i'm banging my head against the wall, and the computer keeps crashing on me as well... damn and blast. frown

you could get somethiing like virtualdub, and use that to reencose the mpeg to an avi, this will allow you to change size, and audio quality to make it much smaller
