hey all
just posting to see if i can get any help/advice. I'm working on the corkscrew and within 20 minutes i pretty much got the movement worked out. My only problem is that i keep hitting myself in the stomach with the ball/tail when im bringing them in front of me after going over my head.
Any tips? or am i just doing it completely wrong?

Btw corkscrew = windmill (but done on a horizontal plane as opposed to vertical)

how long are the chains of your poi when you do the corkscrew?
perhaps you just have to wrap the chains a few times around some of your fingers so that they will be shorter.....thats how i do the corkscrew!
when you swop to a different move you can let the chains get long again and keep on spinning!
hope your back is straight and think about the lenght of your poi/chains!

Yup yup.. arch enough that you get as much extension as possible, then shorten chains until you can pass your chest/stomach without hitting it. Go even shorter if you want a more verticle stance.

erm.. your back shoudnt be straight in a corkscrew.

So far as I understand it, your stance doesn't matter, it's the plane that the poi are spinning. Horizontal(ish) is corkscrew, verticle is windmill. Of course, I'm just a newb, so I wouldn't doubt if I was wrong (I hate poi terminology in general anyway, it's all just spinning :P).

actually, it depends on the length of the poi. if your leash is short enough, you can do the whole move with a straight back. the way most people seem to do it though, back is bent for the bottom half, but straight for the top half.

Exactly. The angle of the back is not what determines the move.
Most glowstringers do it with really short strings and their posture is much better.

Humm. I have no problem doing a corkscrew Standing with a straight back when i use my pois "thay go from fingertips to my armpit. If thay where loger i whould proberbly need to bend forward.

You are totally right.
Im getting the idea of how I learnt it which was by sticking my bum out so the poi didnt hit me.
Then my back started hurting so I stood up from that day onwards.

Corkscrews - great - this is my favourite poi move of all time. Have you got it going both ways yet? If so try leg wrapping each poi round each leg to come spinning the alternative way. I personally like air wrapping from a corkscrew (mainly because its the only air wrap I can do
). From a corkscrew airwrap I like to let go of one poi so the handle spins round back to the hand I relased it from. And I like to combine the leg wrap to this move so that after one leg wrap I wrap the other way and then air wrap through my legs let go of one handle to catch it again. Also air wrapping and then leg wrapping whilst still in the air wrap is fun especially when you manage to unwrap the poi from the leg wrap but air wrapping the alternative way. Ahhhhhh - corkscrews - probably the only move I do in actual fact

@ucof: the straight back was more about not getting aches in the back as you should consider your way of standing as well when playing poi....ask arashi!!! I didnt mean to say that the angle of your back determines the move!
apart from that just shorten your poi! ...and please dont stick your bum out it wont improve your poi playing!!!

It's probably just me... but is it not easier to move around and dance with corkscrews if you are slightly bent at the waist?
Standing straight doesn't give the same scope for movement? Or I could be totally wrong

Sinner... there's nothing wrong with sticking your bum out... just make sure to move with the poi and don't stand in the one place

I can't go directly from corkscrew to windmill since I can't alter the orbit that drastically w/out the poi smacking me. However, I usually go from corkscrew to quick wheel plane to windmill..

cork to windmill in 3 easy steps..
1- do the bottom of the cork
2- do the top of the cork
3- do the back of a windmill
windmill to cork
1- back of windmill
2- front of windmill
3- bottom of cork.
you end up with a windmill that is going a different direction than your cork was, but it works all the same or vice versa..

I didn't mean not to move at all, I like dancing and moving with poi, but I just thought when you're a newbie and want to learn a new move....isn't it better to concentrate on the move first, to play it proper before starting to dance or to integrate dance moves in your play?

I thought that too... I spent the first year and a half learning moves standing totally still - before someone told me it was a dance (and I saw how much better they looked).
I basically had to relearn what I knew, only with movement (cos when you move, it's harder
).A year and a half later, at Uberpoi, I met Drew and have to relearn those things all over again
Maybe it's better to move right from the beginning

How do you not move when spinning poi? It's not just a dance, it's a kinetic energy! I tend to feel awkward when standing still and spinning (except for butterfly).

i've been working on moving while doing tricks.. its a hell of a lot harder, lol.
got a copuple of bruises from trying to spin around while doing 3bt weave
i'll get there eventually..
while i got ur attention anyone got any groovy ways to move between tricks cos i keep having to stop and start from the begining to do tricks like weave to butterfly... etc.

When you get moving around while spinning down, it gets easier. But, start taking advantage of wraps and stalls and changing the path of the poi. There's various discussions on such things around these forums, but best bet is to hit the vid forums and watch and watch and learn...
