I"ve actually been there, and I have to say that story is quite idealized.

What actually happened is that the Thai government outlawed private ownership of tigers and demanded that all owners give up their pets. An enterprising monk, realised that there was no way that these born in captivity tigers would be able to survive in the wild so he solicited the Thai government for land to build a temple where he planned to look after these tigers.

The whole complex is actually a tourist attraction, and the tigers live in cages however they are brought out into the scenic gully ( actually an abandoned rock quarry ) for photo ops with paid admission tourists. You really only get about 20 seconds with an adult tiger.

The cubs, on the other hand, are great, you can actually play with them, but once they get to a year old, then, they become dangerous.

They can't ever hope to set those cats free, they'd be shot in an instant, just like every other wild tiger in Thailand, so the temple really is, and always will be, a zoo.

I know it's in Thai, but there are some photos.

I wasn't trying to pee on your parade, the temple is worth a visit. How often do you have the opportunity to actually touch a tiger?

All those other animals really do live there, but it's not in the context that the article implies. They're well away from the gully when the tigers are out ,and the cubs, though closer to the animals, do have chains around their necks.

I'll Email you a few photos to your hotmail account.

Oh jesus, don't even get me started on how lame this school is... I could be here all night and still have plenty of reasons left why it should be burnt to the ground

Ah. But these are Bhuddist tigers, see?

They won't go around mauling chavs.

And normal tigers are only good for killing those armed with fresh fruit (according to Monty Python wink )

The great advantage of the tiger in unarmed combat is that he eats not only the fruit-laden foe but also the redcurrants. Tigers however do not relish the peach. The peach assailant should be attacked with a crocodile.
