The electric ran out while the bf was using the pc last night, he had lots of progs running. he left it off for a few minutes, turned it back on but the output is all fuzzy and only just barely readable. the monitor's menu is ok but the display is distorted. we did a system restore to the other day but it didn't work. someone please help!!! (we're running xp home ed)

Well i sounds like either : -
1) your video card is fried
2) Your moniter is fried
One of thoughs. Borrow a friends moniter and see if its the same on that one. if its not the moniter, chances are its the Video Card (graphics card...whatever).
Hope that was of some use.

You can try pulling out the power cable from the computer, leaving it for about 5 minutes, holding down the power button with the cable still out and then plugging it back in again.
You might have a degauss button on the monitor, try pressing it.

Well we bought a new card - 256 nvidia geforce thingimajig, after intallation the start up was still mangled, but it seems to have rectified itself late last night.
Probably some static (thanks for the tip $niper!)
its ok now panic over (phew!)
