After watching fire performers at raves and gatherings, I was inspired to try it myself. So I picked up a broom stick one day and was instantly hooked! For months I devoted my time to mastering the staff. I was at the supermarket often, buying meths (I wonder what they thought!). I used up alot of broom sticks and old t-shirts. When it was rainning I would do it inside (without fire of course). What I loved about it, why it was so addictive, was when these pure moments of unrestricted freedom would course through me. The staff, fire, dance, and me, would dissappear leaving a perfect expression of union....without fear, doubt, worry or limits. I loved it! It wasn't until years later, after learning an awesome meditation technique called Ascension, that I realized that it was a taste of God, of the Divine within everyone, that I was experiencing while fire dancing. I experienced the same "space" while being in nature as well. The only frustrating thing was that I had to dance or be in nature in order to experience it, and then it wasn't always. I couldn't fire dance at work! Nor walk in nature while shopping. I wanted that experience all the time.....even when working or doing daily activies. So, I found Ascension, which is designed to take anyone, anyone , to the peace and stillness within....and make it a permanent experience. Now, 9 years later, I experience divine joy and peace all the time.....and my fire dancing is absolutly awesome, being a simple expression of the beauty and wonder that lies within. Peace! Rama

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourself, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous and talented? Who are you NOT to be?

hmmmm, thanks ben-ja-men, sounds like it will be fun! Alas, I have other commitments in New Zealand. Perhaps I'll see some of you there some time?

Question: ever had an experience while dancing where there is no thought? No sense of a body or staff.....just a dance? Just curious..... weavesmiley I like to call it stillness in motion...pretty sweet! And yeah, maybe the meths does help! eek

Spining is different for everyone, i recently read a post (at another forum) that was totally against spiritual poi/ staff.

For me its a trip. There are so many different ways if trancending while spining. For afew of the the older crew Astral is not uncommon. (I used astral to learn hard moves with out touching my poi)

I dont know much about Ascension but maybe its the same thing smile

Astral poi a.k.a spirit poi = Yum smile Its not all i believe in by far but it works for me.

Kiaora Dragon, I love to hear about the different experiences people have. What I've noticed is that it normally is the same type of experience for everyone....yet we use different words and labels, different associations to describe it. For some, spiritual works, or maybe religion, others use Astral traveling, or highten awareness....maybe freedom or plain old joy. Trancending, ascending, floating, flying....I don't really care about the words, they are not important to me, but the experience is everything I feel. Why else would fire-dancing be sooooo friggen wonderful! Yet, we do need words to communicate, so I often use different concepts to appeal to a wider group of people. Ascension is different in that it is simple techniques that takes that "experience"...happiness, peace, bliss, whatever.....and makes it permanent. But in whatever case, I think we all can agree.....Fire rules!! Rama

I spin because it feels completely and totally natural. I agree that the staff will become an extension of yourself while dancing and you are merely manipulating your own body.

Besides, you can work faster and smoother if you train your muscles then just let your subconscious handle the dancing.^^

I'm not strange... I'm just not like you.

I agree Mr Crimson. When I was studying staff spinning I found two key things going on. One: practical. Learning each move, timing, stretching, trainning the left and right side of the body to adapt, going fast, slow, branching out, figuring out what works and what doesn't (like whacking oneself in the ooooops !)
And the other is pure mindlessness, where you sort of give yourself completly to the dance and "somthing else" takes over. Here flow and balance naturally present themselves, and this focus, that is without concentration, becomes the guiding tool. It's sort of like spinning with the head and then the heart. Both helpful and awesome in their own way.
I'm sorry if I'm blabbling too much, I'm new here and don't know the rules yet! I just really love all aspects of Fire Dancing, love sharing it and love everyones imput. What I also really love is how unserious it is.....just playin!

Yeh I've used the technique of twirling in astral projections to help learn difficult moves before. It does work pretty well because you're training your subconscious directly. I have a strange difficulty though, that a lot of the things i manifest in astral projections, slowly shrink smile. After a few minutes the staff becomes the length of a pen. I don't know why this happens but it's really annoying.

I know exactly what you mean by that sense of oneness you're referring to Rama. It can happen anytime, often during meditation, or playing music, driving your car, in nature, while dancing... and twirling. For me It's hard to maintain while twirling for very long because I concentrate too hard on getting the moves right. Ironically, i twirl much better when I'm 'in the zone'.

lolsign aint that the truth! Everything we do is soooo much better when there's no sense of limitations or doubts. The only thing I always found frustrating was that I could never make it happen.....it would just happen, and then pass. Wanting to maintain that zoniness is what led me to Ascension, where accessing "it" became very easy....while concentrating or not.

And your so right bender, fun is Very good! If I'm not having fun, in whatever I'm doing, then I'm wasting my time! I spin nowadays simply outta the pure joy of doing it.

Sometimes when I spin and I'm just freestyling and going with the flow I get in the same head-zone as I do in deep meditation... yeah, I can relate to that freedom and joy.

Your Ascension meditation sounds interesting, would you care to PM more about it? (I've studied yoga and meditation for about 9 years, but I've only recently been getting interested in the huge variety of meditation techniques out there. I'm most familiar with Yoga Nidra.)

Those familiar with theta healing see no need to restrict their awakened state to just twirling.
