Well I have been convinced by my boyfriend to go with him on a tour of the UK for two years (working holiday)...

Will be going sometime in the early 2006 (dates are yet to be set in stone but it will probably be in your spring cause we don't want to suffer the freezing winter as soon as we get there)...

We will be stopping in at South Africa first (probably late January) to catch up with his family and friends before heading on to the UK.

We are hoping to settle in London to start off with (have heard it is easy to get a job there)....

Any advice or assistance that anyone can offer us would be so appreciated....

I think the TNT magazine is quite good for travellers looking for work. I met a few Australians here in Edinburgh who got their job through it... I think this page is for London:

Change of plan...we are no longer stopping in South Africa...we will, however be in the UK aorund Mid December.

Yes I realise the insanity of that going from Summer to the freezing winter of the UK.

Any suggestions of where to stay who to contact etc etc would be so greatly appreciated.

bring thick woolley jumpers, scarfs, and spare cash to be able to pay for über expensive London stuff. Everything is more expensive in London than anywhere else.

Soory no advice for where to stay as I don't like there, it might be worth mentioning in social tho as more folks might read it. Or in the help forum so it stays on the first page for more than a day!

Let's relight this forum ubblove

I found this invaluable when I've been looking for flat/house shares (mucho cheaper than getting a place by yourselves). And if you pick right, you'll make some friends in the process (not like my last house mate, but he was *strange* anyway).

Moveflat.com

As for jobs, can't really help you there. I guess that London may seem easier to find jobs as it's a large population with many temp oppurtunities. Agencies are prolly a good place to start, they'll find you a job doing the leg work for you. Depends if you have any specilist skills or experience.

I've personally lived in East Acton, Norbury, Thornton Heath, Camberwell, Peckham and a brief stay near Waterloo. Haven't ever had any problems with muggings or the such - but if you seem alert and don't travel alone I don't think there will be any problems.

Busses are invaluable (when they're not getting blown up anyway frown ). Consider that a yearly tube pass (zones 1-4) costs in excess of £1200 To use just a buss pass (which covers all the zones and trams)
is £440. Go figure. For invaluable information on London transport use Transport for London

If I can be of anymore use just chuck us a PM. Oh, and make use of the many London HoPpers valuable experience smile

If you are going to london an easy one (considering you're an aussie) is to start by getting a job at a Walkabout bar.

Its crap, it pays crap and its umm crap BUT they will employ you purely on the basis that you are australian (it fits in with their theme) and they will provide cheap accomodation in a shared staff house. They usually pay minimum wage (£4.85 p/h) but only charge something like £20 a week all in for the shared accomodation.

Its not great but it should allow you the freedom you need to get over here and find a decent job.

Their website is HERE.

Not sure if its what you're looking for but its not a bad starting point if you have no other plans smile

I have never been in the Walkabout bar to be honest. But i think it has ramps, so crawling out shouldn't be a problem wink

I know the one in Croydon is ok!

Anyway, the point is: come to Sheffield smile

Walkabout is basically an aussie themed bar. Well aussie themed but whta I really mean is they take a load of stereotypical australian things and bolt them to the walls and ceiling etc. On the subject of work. Bar work is always a good thing to take up while you look for a better job or something but I wouldn't have thought you'll want to do it for the whole time your here although with a company like walkabout you could probably move from city to city fairly easily which would allow you to travel a lot more.

Could somebody stop the room please... I'd like to get off

Yeah we were thinking of getting bar work till we could get something better or even working two jobs to get enough money behind us to get round Europe.

We are going to be trying to avoid things that attract too many Australians and South Africans.....(no offense guys) we are there to experience the European way of life not to hang out day and and day out with people with the same type of background as us.

Although that being said we do have a couple of Aussie friends over there that we are going to be catching up with.

Well the tickets have been purchased and there isn't too much longer till we will be jetsetting it out of Australia.

For the official dates....we will be leaving Australia on the 15th December and arriving in Amsterdam for three days....

On the 18th December we will be then leaving Amsterdam and arriving in London.

We will be staying at the Flying Pig backpackers in Amsterdam and Streatham in London.

Would love to meet up with people in both Amsterdam and London if anyone is interested.
