Hi all,

My introduction to Fire Twirling was watching a couple of videos on a totally unrelated forum 2 nights ago - up to that point, I was completely clueless! I had never seen anything like it before. I was enthralled and captivated by the fire dances and the endless glowing circles of flame.

After watching the videos a number of times and wiping the drool off my keyboard, I carefully eyed my YoYo's sitting so innocently on the desk (hardly a good substitute, but a decent quick fix). Found the lessons on here and played and discovered that this is alot of fun and at the same time calming and mediative.

I no longer use the YoYo's but homemade sock poi's (Note: bars of soap do NOT make good weights and have since been replaced with tennis balls).

I think I may be becoming addicted redface

So, a basic rundown of what I'm consistent with so far as found at the online lessons:

bwrd/fwrd/split swings
butterfly/giant butterfly
beginnings of alternate butterfly
beginnings of low wave
(modified) chasing the sun
basic turns

I know, hardly anything compared to the repetoire of you guys, but thought it'd be good to let you know where I'm at if you have any advice or whatnot.

So, a couple of noobie questions:

Is there anywhere where there's a comprehensive listing of common moves and their acronyms (and perhaps a description of the move)?

How would a beginner know if they're doing the moves correctly, especially if they have no IRL contact with another spinner? I'd hate to settle into any bad habits which would prevent me from progressing.

Well, this post has gotten much longer than anticipated so I better stop typing. I'm glad I found the site and forum!

Hey, welcome to HoP!!

Check out the poi moves section of the forum, you can join the rest of us in total confusion at some of the descriptions wink

You'll be pretty unlucky if you don't find anyone here willing to help you out.

Well, she's got me interested too.. as Bonita's Husband I've watched as she's slipped into this interesting new world. Trust me guys, she's addicted and in need of a 12 step program weavesmiley

I hope we've agreed that if she (or I) get's into the fire that the flame and the Kites stay seperate.

I used to train in Martial Arts (Shorin-Ryu) and my first love was my 6' Oak staff which I still have. I have a back injury and hope that poi and the staff movements will help with core and back strength.

ok, I'm done stealing your thread Bonita... uhh... you may need to make another set of Poi cuz uhhm... these are mine now!!! eek wink ubbloco I've got POI Yay!!!

This is prob one of the best sites to learn stuff but there are some others as well. Mots and Spherculism have some extra lessons.
Keeping neat planes is important to make it look good I reckon. It means your poi go through the plane they are meant to nice and neat. Sometimes a reflection can help you neaten up.

Hi all,

Hi Pink! Yes, I like the color Pink, and Purple & Green (my fave color combo)

About those planes Gnu - what are the names for what plane? How many planes are there? Oh, and I do watch my reflection to see how 'neat' I'm being - recognizing my non-dominate hand is quite sloppy compared to my dominate. Anyone else having to overcome this?
I haven't heard of Mots and Spherculism - where do I find more information on those sites (I'm presuming they're web sites)?

Thanks Gita and Yoni for the welcome biggrin

I like pumpkin pie with lots of whipped cream. That's about it.

So daunting getting through the other posts with a thousand or so replies! eek

New repetoire:

bwrd/fwrd/split swings/crossovers
fwrd butterfly/giant butterfly/OTH butterfly
fwrd TTN
alternate butterfly/high wave
bwrd butterfly/low wave (rather sloppy still)
chasing the sun (both directions)
basic turns
some other stuff that I don't know the names of
some simple combo's of the above

Favorite repetitive move at the moment:
2 'punches' of TTN (a little more aggressive than 'sliding')
OTH Butterfly
(repeat, lather, rinse)
Rather smooth and cleansing - I like to inhale deeply with the TTN, then exhale with OTH Butterly (and it's 'unwind' in front of the body)

Anyone else incorporate breathing exercises with their spinning?
