I think it's an outrage, especially considering the Bali Bomber got 2 years jail for contributing to the death of ~180 people.
Clearly the bomber had a little more persuasive prowess....
Poor Schapelle - I totally think she's innocent. And, if she's not, well then she deserves it for being so stupid.

They screwed up the bag evidence...the cops touched the bag without wearing gloves...she also touched the bag when she pulled it out after being asked to open her body board bag.

I haven't been following it all that much but my Dad seems to think it was her brother in law who planted the drugs on her.
Yeah there was all that stuff with secruity cameras, weighing her bag, fingerprints etc.
How much marijuana was it again? 4 kilos?
Of course she's innocent but she was never going to be found innocent.
I was listening to the coverage on the radio on my way home and I was shocked and appauled at the group of Indonesians that cheered and clapped when the verdict was announced. I can't get over that.

eh Ive been following it closely, and I think there is no evidence to suggest she is innocent , there is only argument that much 'potential evidence' has not been handled well. There is a lot of dodgy stuff going on behind the scenes too - Eg she was offered two QCs specialising in this kind of defence for free by the Aussie govt, but she refused, instead electing to use Ron Bashir's (who is a proven dodgy guy) lawyer. As far as i'm concerned, the punishment doesnt fit the crime, but everyone knows the Indos are tough on drugs, and there is zero evidence that shows evidence of innocence, and she was caught with 4.1 kilos of drugs on her in bali. The only way you can think she is innocent is to swallow the argument that there was a bunch of coincidences in a row that contributed to the lack of evidence of innocence. Personally given that she has family contacts in indonesia, and that she's been involved with dodgy work before in Japan, if theres circumstancial evidence to be swallowed, its damning rather than supporting her case.

I have not followed it thoroughly and therefore will not pass any judgement on whether she is innocent or not ...
but
I find it truely disgusting that there is so much coverage of this case when so many people are wrongfully trialed in so many places for much more noble reasons such as fighting for freedom or justice...
I am well aware that this has nothing to do with shappelle s case... i also do think that any person who suffers is sad, yet i just feel somewhat repulsed by the media chosing this case over many others not because she is innocent or guilty but because it will "sell" well...
I wish Aung san su ki or so many other people who really could use media coverage and support would "sell" better...
do you know what i mean ?
As for the boycotting of bali.... I am also really not impressed and can only send much love and respect to the amazing Balinese people who, after the bombing have suffered sooo much from lack of tourism... i wish them well and good business... because even in rough times, they have truely impressed me with their kindness and warmth,

This story muchly reminds me of one of my favourite films called Midnight Express, if anyone hasnt seen it its an amazing film based ona true story where William Hayes, an american, was caught smuggling a bit of Hashish on a plane in Turkey, he was a one time offender trying to make a bit of money back home with some friends and it all went horribly wrong. Obivously its his own fault for doing the stupid thing of drug smuggling, but thats not the point of the story, first he gets 3 years but then the Turks in order to make an example on the day of his release tell him they've changed the sentence to life, which in a Turkish jail must be hell.
I'm sure Indonesia cant be much better.
The point in this is I believe these countries really should look on their sentencing laws. I dont see the logic in sentencing someone for life in prisonment for drugs when murderers and rapists can get off much lighter. thats the true crime. At the very least she shoudl be allowed to do her sentence at a jail in Austraila

well apparently the bioagent isnt harmful...
A large part of Australian law is posession too. No one has any hard evidence that shows that she didnt do it, and she was caught in possession of the drugs when caught in bali. also - there were 4 indonesian customs officers that said she tried to prevent them inspecting her bags, and that was a major part of the evidence that the judges went on. So much of the 'peoples defence' of corby is simply bullsh*t thinking.
australian weed is apparently of a much higher quality than indonesian stuff, and there is a ready market in Australians in Bali willing to pay aussie prices for the good stuff.
Her only defence is that much of the evidence that could prove her innocence has by co-incidence failed to materialise. If you ask me, she is in with ron Bakir, who is bank rolling the whole thing, and it was all set up. How else could so many of the safeguards fail to be operating? Its far more likely they were all 'taken care of' by insiders than that they all happened to be switched off / broken on the day she went through. Organised crime using planes to ship drugs around? we KNOW that happens. The chances of Security failsafes being switched off or broken in 3 airports (Brisbane, Sydney and Denpasar) on the same day someone happens to have drugs mistakenly put in their bag? very unlikely. Id put my money on the organised crime bet anyday. Also - imagine how much trouble the bungling baggage handlers would have got in for misplacing 4.1 kilos of weed? Theyd probly be looking at Cement Shoes for something like that. I dont believe they would make a mistake like that very often. So in all you are looking at at least 5 highly unlikely occurences happenning on the same day if you think she is innocent. A bit like winning lotto, but in reverse. and even more unlikely cuz any one of them NOT stuffing up would have proven her innocence. How many longshots are you willing to believe when there is a far more plausible story looking you in the face.
Of course, perhaps it was just an amazing series of conincidences and she is innocent. But if I were the judge, I wouldnt be giving her the benefit of the doubt. Especially considering she was caught with 4.1kilos of weed with no plausible story to show innocence in a country which is well-known to be tough on drugs...

The excuse 'someone else put it there' is hardly unique. If i was found with 4 kg of pot in my car boot, id have trouble getting out of it.
The entire thing of 'innocent til found guilty' doesnt really apply - she was found with drugs in her possession - she needed to be proved innocent. From the cold hard legal perspective thats how it goes.

According to indonesian law...... wether she knew the drugs were in her bag or not is irrelevant. if you have the drugs on your possession even if you dont know it your guilty.

The point i was trying to make is that if you have 4Kilo of pot in your car trunk Dentrassi. If you can prove that you didnt know it was there. You would be found innocent.

the problem is doktor skell, there is no evidence to show her innocence. and she was caught in posession. there is also 4 customs officials that said she tried to prevent them inspecting her bag. Now that would be damning evidence here too. In that case (both here and in Indonesia) she would be and was found guilty. Just cuz she might have gotten off on procedural errors (eg finger prints and missing weight evidence etc) doesnt mean she isnt guilty. Here in Adelaide we have a lawyer who recently ran down a cyclist and killed him while drink driving. He didnt stop and kept driving and there was even witnesses that saw him do it. Well he got off with a $3k fine. Anyone other than a top lawyer or a politician would be in jail. Fair? our system is a joke.

I think its a rish which if your going to be stupid enough to do it then you have to be ready to accept the consequences of your actions and respect another countries laws too.
I think its right what one of you said how the big fuss i think is people are feeling sorry for her since she's a young pretty woman, lets face it, if it was a tattood skin head guy wiht 6 teeth missing people wouldnt kick up much of a fuss would they, i doubt it'd even be in the papers!
A question i put to you is, if she stays in jail ie no appeal, do you think at the least they should ship her home to Oz to do her sentence?
