I just went to meet this guy who had an ad on a musicians' websire saying he was looking for a girl that could play guitar and sing to start an acoustic duette, somewhere along the lines of Sheryl Crow, Counting Crows, KT Tunstall etc, and I was really looking forward to it, cause I've wanted to do something like that for quite a while.

After a brief discussion about music it turned into a "what type of guys do you like, cause I really like girls who can play the guitar" chat-up-plan. And that after several emails discussing style and guitars etc first! Grrrrr. I'm really pissed off. I've given him some un-subtle dating advice for the future. I mean, he was definitely trying to be very nice and everything, but I'm so angry he was wasting my time! I've been practicing guitar and singing for the last few days thinking he was serious about the band idea though I should've really been doing other things.

Ah well. At least I got home early enough to pop into Tesco and discover that they're now clearing mini chocolate orange easter eggs for 24 p per bag. I was definitely in a chocolate mood after tonight!

Anyways, at the beginning I got the whole "I have contacts to musicians and venues" blabla that I'm sure lots of musicians get every day, and while he was obvious enough for me to find out what he was about straight away (and quite harmless, too) I can see how younger/more ambitious/sillier girls might've gone for it, or at least for someone who's a bit better at hiding what he's about for a while! It's the first time something like that has happened to me, but I find it really upsetting frown

My Rant about mucisians is when they name themselves the wrong genre.

For example.
Avril lavigne called herself "punk rock" so did good charlotte.
when they are actually "pop"

Evanescance (sp?) called themselves metal when they are just electric rock

These are a few mainstream examples.
But i dont listen to mainstream

hug don't worry, not all male guitarists are that pathetic hug

i agree with the half ocelot Doktor but in a different kind of way. it seemed to start with Rammstein when they were the only band in the German Industrial Metal section because they wouldn't really fit in anywhere else, and then a few bands started to try to make up genres

eg: Him tried to make up a genre called love metal to try to desguise the fact that they are emo

We are the music makers, We are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams;
World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams;
We are the movers and shakers of the world for ever, it seems.

I dont know how they can even call themselves metal.
Him is definately NOT metal in any sense of the genre

Also. "Laibach" Another german band in the industrial metal section

At the risk of dragging this thread further off topic, I also hate the sheer number genres that seem to have sprung up fairly recently. I try to put things in one of 3 categories - stuff I like, stuff I'm indifferent to and stuff I don't like smile

hug to Birgit

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

thanks everyone who gave me hugs!!! I know not all guitarists are like that, I never meant to imply that. I was just so pissed off at that guy and had to get it off my chest! Luckily he's (so far) had the sense to not get back to me about the band idea wink

About the off-topic stuff: I think the definitions just change with time... "Heavy Metal" was originally the description given to Led Zeppelin who'd now probably go under "Classic Rock", and "Metal" can be mostly anything as long as the band have long hair and claim they're metal. "Rock" now seems to be anything where people can play their own guitars, and most "Pop" has a dance- or hip-hop-beat in the background. When HIM started, I was quite into the EMO-type of music (though not them...), but had never even heard of "EMO", we used to call HIM "teenie-goth" instead. And then of course there's all the bands who feel they have to start a new music genre because they don't want to be labelled rolleyes So while genres are quite useful when people want you to describe your music, I absolutely agree with BovrilMonkey about the categories!

DoktorSkell, getting upset about genres is a waste of time, especially when mainstream radio/tv/big labels will give the artist the description that'll sell best, and even more if you don't even listen to them wink I'm sure the people you hang around with will share your taste, so you can just laugh about the other stuff together smile

I dont get annoyed about it really.

Although i did get Annoyed at the iTunes id 3 tags.

I was putting my new album Silence is Sexy by Einsturzende Neubauten on my iPod. And the tags labelled it "Electronica" When Neubauten are very clearly "Industrial" mad

ooohh.... it annoyes me....
I GET SUCH VIOLENT URGES
*calms down*

Nah its cool. Genre's are getting pretty weird now days.
There used to be a handfull of genre's
Rock, Folk, Country / Western, Jazz, Blues, Funk

Mind you this was a long time ago ubblol

One more thing though birgit. I dont think that those requirements for a metal band were quite accurate.

I think the right description would probaby be.
hi speed tuned down guitars and violant drumming usually with bass drum played in 8ths. Angry lyrics and sometimes classical electronica.

A few examples of Metal genre's (please forgive me if i get these wrong)

Regular metal (Cadaveria, Death, Bloodbath)
Mainly guitar driven with powerfull sound. sometimes melodic

Death metal (Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Strapping young lad, Children of Bodom)
Quite reliant on Synth and orchestra but still with heavy guitar and drum riffs. Often uses effects coated lyrics but still generally still understandable to the trained metal ear.

Black Metal (unfamiliar with many of these bands)
Very powerfull and punchy sound only sometimes with synth and orchestra. Lyrics are sung as a completely unintelligable low growl that no one but the singer understands. sometimes referred to as the "Cookie Monster" growl. this is generally seen as the most extreme form of metal.

The best kind of music is stuff you can't pigeon hole with convenient labels.

Metal is one thing but you can't beat dance music for an endless supply of catchy names for different genres, let try:

Techno
Electro
Hardcore
Happy Hardcore
Trance
Psy-trance
Hard Trance
Drum & Bass
Trip Hop
Chill
Filter Disco
Breakbeat
Big beat
House
Progressive House
Deep House
Garage
UK garage
Ambient
Dub
Trip Hop
Gabba
Rave
Two Step
Gizzard
Geronemo
Ziphole
Paula Radcliffe

Ok so I made the last few up but you get the idea

Bov thats exactly how I classify music too. All this genre rubbish gets on my nerves. What the bejeabus is 'EMO'? I heard a DJ say the words "This is classic triphop western garage meets asia style, ain't it wicked!" the other day. I was like.... huh? what the ......? ubblol

So in that DJ's style I'd say The Darkness are a Tongue in cheek Glam meets middle America falsetto rock band. biggrin

They might find that genre a bit hard to fit on one of those little plastic dividers in the HMV CD racks though ubblol

Actually I read an interview with her when she was asked about the punk thing and said that she did pop music, it was other people doing that labelling.

#Music I can't juggle to
