Well today during a game of Trivial Pursuit I found out I acutally have a condition that a small percentage of people in the world have, its a condition called Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst.

In simple English it means you are a photic sneezer meaning you are a person who sneezes when exposed to bright light, autosomal bit means it is inherited, dominant means that you only need one copy of the dodgy gene to get it (rather than two for a recessive trait), compelling means you get no choice in it, Helio-Opthalmic means whenever you see bright lights and outburst means, well outburst actually.

I thought everyone sneezed when they looked directly at the sun, like most people sneeze when exposed to dust, so I was in this room and they said the answer and i was like erm.... doesnt everyone sneeze at the sun and EVERYONE in the room looked at me and went er...no, so I was one in 11 which was odd, but cool, can I ask does anyone esle here share my interesting condition, aparently its inherited over DNA too theres a 50-50 chance offspring will inherit it, and they can also inherit how many times they sneeze, mine varies from zero to about five or maybe more, its interesting and i was surprised as hell to hear that somethign I didnt even know about me was something so does anyone else here suffer from the ADCHOO syndrome? (appropriately named ey)

whenever my boyfriend has a sneeze that he wants to get out (that makes sense doesn't it?), he looks at a bright light to induce it. i never understood why, i don't know if it's everytime he looks at bright light though. I'll ask him for you though.

i do that as well, theres nothing worse than a sneeze that wont come, the bright light makes you unintentionally squint and that somehow helps you to sneeze. it only works for me when i wanna get one out thats hanging around, i guess it could work all the time for some people. that might help explain it....

I got taught that then a sneeze stucks in your nose and doesnt want to come out (annoying) look into the sun or any bright light... and mostly it helps...

so... can't say i'm with ya guys on the whole ADCHOO thing... but maybe that's where the whole sneezes being called achoo things come from.... i mean... when you sneeze it doesn't really sound like achoo... does it?

I agree with Zim. The only thing sun-looking-at induces for me is burnt out rods in my eyes ^.^' and big spots where ever I look for the next half hour.

If i feel a sneeze coming on, I can help it along by looking towards a bright light.

I wonder how people sneezed before some clever folk invented the word achoo!

I found this web site while researching ADCHOO Syndrome for my children and grand children. (No wise cracks about age, K?) My children's father made me laugh when he sneezed EVERYTIME he looked at the sun. Then came the kids...5 of them. Mostly our 2 sons suffered. Then came my grandchildren...mostly our grandsons suffered. I have never known anyone else to have this, but it runs rampant in this family of males! (Including the # of sneezes which run in 3's +) This morning's news cast had a little documentary on it, so I started searching and found you guys. The news brief said it ocurrs in less than 10% of the population, it IS hereditary, and predominant in males of the family, although females suffer, too. I sent them all your web site so they could comment. I suggested to them one thing... cool...I'm hilarious, I know...

Here are some early thoughts on the subject of light sneezing from Francis Bacon's Sylva Sylvarum (London: John Haviland for William Lee, 1635, page 170): '

Looking against the Sunne, doth induce Sneezing. The Cause is, not the Heating of the Nosthrils; For then the Holding up of the Nostrills against the Sunne, though one Winke, would doe it; But the Drawing downe of the Moisture of the Braine. For it will make the Eyes run with Water; And the Drawing of Moisture to the Eyes, doth draw it to the Nosthrills, by Motion of Consent; And so followeth Sneezing; As contrariwise, the Tickling of the Nosthrills within, doth draw the Moisture to the Nosthrills, and to the Eyes by Consent; For they also will Water. But yet, it hath been observed, that if one be about to Sneeze, the Rubbing of the Eyes, till they run with Water, will prevent it. Whereof the Cause is, for that the Humour, which was descending to the Nosthrills, is diverted to the Eyes.'
