Get two long socks and put a tennis ball in each. There is no better set of beginner poi. Check out the free lessons here to get started.

If you happen to have any of those nets you get with washing up powder tablets, thread some long string (I used shoelaces) through them and put tennis balls or something else heavy in them.
Anything long with a weight on the end will do - if you look at the "Strangest thing ever spun" thread that lives, errrr, somewhere, then you'll see that people have spun pretty much everything Shopping bags with something in will do just fine, or something on a bit of string. Got any old yoyo's?
