Posted: Ok so I'm not really new but it has been over a year since I posted regularly... I just bought a new video from HOP and I'm getting back into poi, so would love to start up chatting again.
It's challenging when it's 32 degrees in my back yard and I have a drop ceiling in my basement studio... needless to say I have *very* short poi! but I'm only 5' 2" so a taller person probably couldn't do it at all. I guess you have to take the little advantages in life where you can!
Name: Ilanah
Toys, hobbies: Fire fingers, non-flaming poi (so far), belly dancing w/sword, cane, ribbon sticks, tambourine, veil
Other hobbies: SCA medieval reenactment, kickboxing, pottery, bardic
City: Des Moines, Iowa, USA
Biggest problem with Midwest Living: Driving 3 hours to meet any other poi folks! Lots of bellydancers here at least.
Has anyone else had absolutely NO luck with the search feature on this site? I did a search for butterfly, bf, etc. and came up with absolutely nothing related to the basic butterfly move. I was kind of surprised after all the statements on the site about "be sure to search before you ask a question that 532 people have already asked...etc." Good rule, I'm just curious... probably I can chalk it up to user error.

Posted: Yow! That is cold and you are braver than I to spin outside in that kind of weather. I stay in my basement until it hits 50 or so...I never thought about trying to spin with a big coat on. All the pictures you generally see are people wearing summer clothes... I don't know much about the "scene" or "lifestyle" or what have you since we don't have one here... unless there's some closet poi group in Des Moines I've never met.
I wonder what time it is in Europe... it's 10:30 pm central time here so it's probably 11:30 in Delaware so I have to wonder... are they sleeping? I suppose I should be sleeping but what fun is there in that?
Later,

Thanks for the welcome!

Posted: No worries! I had to change my avatar when some newbie started using the old one! Just the badger dancing. And just come up north and complain about the cold!

Posted: You're in Canada? Ok, I take back any complaining about the cold in Iowa. Dare I ask the temp there today?
PS. I took a look at your profile... please tell me "cat twirling" has nothing to do with actual housecats *as my sweet kitty Pasha looks up at me trustingly * ha!

Posted: The search or "durbs" function isn't to great, I tend to find using the " " marks makes it a little better. And if its move help you want maybe you should try narrowing your search by only looking in the moves forum etc. Or going through the free lessons if you haven't already of course
Let's relight this forum

Posted: Thanks for the help you guys. I will try making the picture smaller on my avatar although I have no idea how to do that so I may take you up on your offer, skul. thanks!
I will go through the free lesson part too to get the help with the butterfly. I can do most of the advanced wave moves on the video because I already know how to do them with swords and ribbon sticks from belly dancing. The Butterfly is a whole new animal...you would so totally laugh at me if you saw me in my basement. But so far I haven't gotten frustrated enough to throw my poi out the window, so I guess that is a good sign.
And I love the color pink.

Posted: Please excuse my sleep deprived state, and the long post. I know this isn't the official "I learned a new move area," but I just had to post that at around 4 AM this morning I finally cracked the butterfly move. *dances around in a lot of happy circles*
l know I posted in my intro thread that it was one of my recent accomplishments but that was a blatant lie really as I have only been able to get it to work a couple of times before tangling my poi and getting frustrated and moving on to something else... the last couple of weeks have been frustrating in general as I can do the waves and other harder moves but just couldn't do the friggin' bf no matter what I tried and I live 180 miles from anyone who knows how to do the darn thing properly. You can't ask a video what you are doing wrong...
I tried showing my dance troupe how cool poi are and they were encouraging I guess but not many tried it and they were mostly not interested...
So it took having a friend watch that part of the video, and then watch me try to do it. I think just having someone watch me at all was helpful as last night I was starting to feel very alone in this endeavor... so he said "try this..." and it still took awhile but by the end of the practicing I could do the darn thing over 42 times in a row without tangling...could have gone longer but just couldn't hold my arms straight out in front of me any longer.(My muscles were kind of fatigued by that point I guess.)
Also we put the black lights from my annual Halloween party up in the basement and what a difference it makes with the glowing practice poi under the UV!
Honestly last night I was feeling very alone and depressed and was thinking about leaving the list and was wondering if this poi thing was even for me.... After the 4 am revelation I was too excited to sleep for a couple more hours (hence the sleep deprivation as it is now 8:20 am and I only slept for a little while...)
Anyway, I'll stop now but I just wanted to thank you all for being a resource for people like me who don't have others in our area who do poi and are trying to spark interest in their town in such a cool pastime and art form. I think I'll stick around for awhile.
Happy Christmas Eve,
Ilanah
