This has been mentioned before.

The problem is that if you search for "spinning" or "twirling", you will get literally thousands of results.

I kinda found a happy compromise.

Twirling has a definition on Webster's that is:
To move or turn round rapidly; to whirl round; to move and turn rapidly with the fingers.

So I'd say most of the time in staff, you're spinning. But if you're doing a 'finger twirl' you're twirling.

That's why batons are often referred to as 'baton twirling' whereas staff is 'staff spinning'.

So:
Fingers 'twirl' (things like batons, pencils, and sometimes, in some moves staff)
The rest of the time, it's 'spin' (things like staff most of the time, the earth, records, CDs, Basketballs.)

You'd never hear anyone talk about the Earth 'twirling' on it's axis, nor ask your local DJ where they are twirling records on Friday, nor twirl a roulette wheel.

If it don't use fingers, it's spinning.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.
[They do not move.]

Firedancing

That's what I call it. Twirling makes me think of poxy marching bands and spinning (which is a term I use from time to time) is too broad a term when speaking with non-firedancing types.

So is it spinning or twirling?

Neither I’m afraid.

I’m a swinger biggrin

And, I’d have to agree with Flash, because it’s always been Firedancing in my part of the world. Like, let’s go and watch the Firedancing.

Hey, now. Be nice to the band geeks. Color guard people "spin" flags, rifles and sabers. The only thing that ever gets "twirled" is a baton--something that only applies to drum majors in a parade situation.

When it comes to poi or staff and the like--it's "spinning" to me, although I do use the phrase "going to play with fire" as well. "Firedancing" also has a nice ring.

I think last time this was brought up there was a good point used that over in the Uk it is refered to as spinning where as here in australia it is known more as twirling.

Hmm NYC's definition means that pen spinning should actully be called pen twirling... Well now that I have forgotton that lets get some pen or poi spinning going.

But as for me I will call poi spinning Whappage because for me thats about all that happens, Man I need to practice more.

well konsti, as DFZ puts it, in oz its apparently twirling, so thats probly where i got it from, but nowadays i wouldnt say that.. its always a spinning sesh.. or spinnage, or sometimes playing with fire.. thats a good one.. although firedancing also depends on the body movement one has when spinning/twirling/swirling/twinning/spirling/whatever
