I am the proud owner of three cockatiel birds (also known as weeros or quarrions)...and they are beautiful...they are my babies.
My youngest one (Turais) hit into a wall with his wing on Friday night and tore some ligaments in his wing so he was having problems flying afterwards.
Saturday morning I took him to this vet that had been recommened to me (specialises in birds apparently)...anyway he strapped my birds wing and also gave him an injection of anti inflammatories.
During the visit the vet let go of him and because Turais couldn't fly due to his injured wing he fell to the ground like a stone.
Saturday night, Turais wouldn't eat or drink, Sunday he would only eat if we pushed the seed up to his mouth...and would only drink after putting a finger in the water and dripping it down his beak.
He wouldn't walk and when he did he kept falling over, in the end I got the strap on his wing cut off because his claw kept getting stuck in the wrapping and he kept falling over...it was too distressing to watch anymore.
Monday morning: I took my baby bird to work with me because I was REALLY worried about him. At about 9:30 he made a mess of himself so I picked him up to clean him off and he started to have a seizure in my hand. I freaked and started crying.
I called the vet and asked him what the hell he had done to my bird because before I had taken it to him my bird was fine but now he was VERY sick.
He told me that nothing he could have done would have caused the problem then told me to bring him in so he could see what he could do for him. I told him where to shove it.
Anyway to cut a really long story short I took him to another vet yesterday and have just had the phone call with the diagnosis...my bird is brain damaged.
He will never fly again, he can walk but not very well. He may not live to see out the week.
They are going to give him a prednisone injection to try to reduce any swelling in his brain and hopefully that will help him...so he may still live.
I am sad and upset by all this.
I have organised to take the next three days off work to look after my little baby and to make his life comfortable if it is going to be his last days or to HOPEFULLY nurse him back to health.
Firstly I guess I just want some hugs to make me feel a bit better cause I am feeling pretty low over all this.
Secondly, I would like some advise...would it be better to help him out and see if he lives through this even though his quality of life will not be as good as it was (and believe me I WOULD do EVERYTHING to make his life as comfortable as possible), or (as asked by the vet) should I put him down? (please believe me I do not want to go to that option but I am trying to think of him and not me).

You know Turais, you will be able to tell wether or not he is in discomfort or pain, If he isn't there is no reason why he should be put down, you love him and I am sure he loves you. I am also sure you will know what to do that is right for him.
Sometimes vets are too quick to dismiss birds who are not perfect. If you believe that he can be happy living with his injuries (as many people do) then there is no reason why you should not do everything you can to help him live as long as he can.
I really feel for you, it is so sad.

I bought Turais home last night from the Vet and he is looking so much better than what he was when I last saw him.
He was chirping and hopping around (cause he can't really walk properly it is more lke a hop and stumble) but he seems happy.
I took the next three days off work so I can keep a close eye on him.
If I see that he continues to improve I have to take him back to the Vet tomorrow for another cortisone injection.
My two other birds are so happy he is home.
On Monday night when he was gone they were so deadly quiet but last night I couldn't get them to shut up they were so excited.
I am so happy that Turais seems to be okay I hope that he only improves from here.

Wow im so glad to hear that Medusa and I hope he just keeps getting better, I have cockatiels and I love them to bits, they breed and i occassionally have to hand rear some babies if the mothers dont look after them or if they arent getting enough food so I now how distressing it can be when they look like they are on the way out
having also worked at a vets i am ashamed to say that often vets are a little bit too trigger happy to put animals down because it is quick and doesnt cost the vets as much money, they dont put animals down for the hell of it, but in some occassions if an animal is old orreally ill in which it would require the vet more effort to cure it with it also being touch n go they would just say its better if i put them down, its a shame but true
i hate it. a vet wanted to put my african grey parrot down because he had catarracts and couldnt see out of one eye and the other one is a bit blurry,he said it would affect everything for the bird, but the bird is great and has a wonderful life, shows how much vets know
i will use this thread as its quite relevant to tell a quick story about a bird incident that happened the other day to my mum, it is kind of funny but also quite sad. My mum helped secure a deal being a p.a. for some rich family and she was in their house and the cleaning lady didnt turn up so my mum was doing the hoovering and suddenly hurd a loud sucking noise followed my a thump, she saw a feather on the ground, she has only gone n sucked up the guys budgie!!!, it was stuck in the bend of the hoover and couldnt get it out, this was like a hand reared budgie and knows loads of stuff, so she rings me up going oh god need togo to pet store n buy a new budgie, i was telling her dont bother cos they'll easily tell, and at this point i was pretty upset too cos i hate the thought of that animal being in pain n ending nastily, anyway 4 hours later she takes it to a electircal shop, they cut open the hoover, pull the body out and suddenly it shakes its head off soot and is fine, funny how things turn out, my mum was relieved!
