About 6 years ago I saw some people spinning fire on the beach outside cafe mambo in ibiza at sunset while Roger Sanchez was playing an impromptu jazz house set on the sand. At that point I decided that I had to learn to do it one day.

Then 2 years ago my housemate got interested in poi and decided to start playing - I thought that was the perfect time to take up the fire spinning dream.

One thing led to another and now I own more toys than most kids.

I first saw poi when I was 10. My mum met some twins who fire spun together at the Exodus Festival. She came home determined to learn. As soon as she knew how she taught me. So i have been spinning for six and a half years. So really I should be a lot better than I am. Lol.

Thanks to:
Meg and Laura (for showing my mum),
My mum, Thistle on HoP (for showing me), and,
Every other poi bod who has taught me something along the way. Especially Drew, I wouldn't be able to do 3 beat weave without you.

it started by raving about 3 months ago. I saw people spinning, in my head i doubted myself to accomplish such a task. Yet i practiced it daily. As i begun learns about raving, i was soon to get bored of it. and i saw a poi video section, as i watched it, my whole point of view of raving was collapsed, poi looked beautiful and graceful, i just was forced to learn it. Started doing poi with the L.E.D. sock poi from HOP. thanks guys

i had been wanting to learn poi and a few other things for a while after seeing a girl doing it in our high school. few years later when i went to mongolia, turned out this girl also went and she made me want to try it out even more!
but i didnt actually start til another year later when i went camping and met a girl called katy who taught me the basics. she sent me home with instructions for making my own poi and soon as i got home i was off!!
that was about 2 years ago!

now im spreading the joy...so many of my friends are now hooked on poi! its great!!

I was surfing the internet, and I stumbled upon a picture of a woman spinning fire poi. I've searched and searched, but for the life of me I can't find her site again. I'd love to write her to tell her how she's changed my life.

It was a friend of mine who first showed me Poi two years ago. I was impressed, but it wasn't until late last year that the bug actually began to bite and I began to envy the ability to spin.

I'd been doing Tae Kwon Do on and off since 1990 and street skating since 1994; Poi seemed a good way to "make a triangle", as it were... sort of thing meditate

The dicovery of HoP in the New Year increased my interest to the point where, by February this year, I could resist no longer and the rest, as they say, was history... biggrin

It may stop, but it never ends.

I was going out with an amazing guy called steve and for 6 months I was walking around in a squishy daydream and convinced Ide found my soulmate, until one night he took me out dropped me off at home kissed me goodnight and I never heard from him again. I was heartbroken and I needed to do something to keep me distracted so I took up poi spinning, so you know swings and round-abouts lol

i was awful for ages.

although i had seen some people to fire poi around a friends house. one idiot refused to wear a hat and set his hair gel on fire.

it took me a while to pluck up the courage to spin with fire, i still get nervous!

I was searching for a fan website for Gigi Edgley because she is on my favorite show Farscape. In her bio she listed fire spinning as one of her skills. I did a search and ended up here. I have practice poi, fire poi, fire staff and glow poi all because I am such a scifi geek. redface

She did? Wicked smile Knew I liked her for a reason.

I started after I'd seen people in the Stone Circle field at Glastonbury 200...3 I think. I remember being absolutely stunned. Started with nunchuks first, but some strings and tennis balls later I began to do poi and then staff a bit later. Haven't done enough fire stuff yet but we do get the paraffin out for parties wink

I guess i had seen poi occasionally (movies, tv etc) but hadnt really paid much attention except for thinking, wow that looks cool.

Bought a staff a few years back and within a couple of months I really wanted to try poi since it seemed to have alot more depth and options to it. Bought and set and have been playing with them on and off for a few years now smile

*Stands up* Ahem, I'm Sam and I'm a Poiaholic...

Got into juggling at Uni, and found a few mates also did it. Then a few years later, I ran into one of them (Fearpig, alias Tom) at a party, and found he'd got into Poi. Had a go, smacked myself about, went back to juggling.....

Then at Glade last year (2005) I saw loads of people spinning, remembered Fearpig poiing at the party, and got myself a set.... At Glade this year I was poiing all the way next to the Origin stage, and I did my first fire performance a few weeks ago at my best mates wedding! Yay! I love it.... Thanks Fearpig!!!!

i have no idea....

the idea of wanting to spin poi had been rattleing around in my head for aaaaages, but i don't recal how it got there. a few of my friends were into juggling and contact and i decided i wanted to find something cool without being the same as them...

i rememberd poi but didn't really do anything about it other than tell everyone i wanted to learn.
then i bumbed into my friend Bob at rio's one night and he had his poi with him. i had a wee go, just spinning in circles before i got yelled at for poiing in the club :S

it seemed so natural when i played with them that i vowed to get some as soon as i got paid... This just so happend to be while i was at leeds festival this year and when i stumbled across some in the extream largness tent it had to be done. i learnt butterfly and 2bt weave in the two days left at leeds festival, googled poi as soon as i could and ended up here!

I started spinning poi, after I met my current gf at a juggling club when I was spinning fire. I started spinning poi so that we had something in common so I could get to know her better.
