hey, my name's dave thomas and im from london. i've been doing poi for about a year and a half now it's such an amazing thing. Home of poi has been a huge help, and i know theres still so much i havent looked at yet.
Im at Leeds Metropolitan university in my final year of a computer entertainment technology degree, and my dissertation is based on poi. I want to make a poi computer game, one that truly reflects the art, one which includes all the fun playful elements, while being kinda crazy at the same time. Part of my project will also include making a 'learn to poi' dvd, which i reckon will be very useful.
I've started a website, at https://poithegame.150m.com
, which contains all the work i do for the game. It may seem a little bare at the moment, but it will fill as the workload increases. There is a questionnaire in the community section i'd love everyone to fill in, part of my research.
I'd really like to hear from anyone with ideas or questions about my game, as i figure a good game is going to be one that involve players from the beginning.
Thanks for listening, hope to hear from you all soon

ooh, exciting. a poi game. you should do a search on here for poi video game. we had an interesting discussion about it once in a thread as i recall.

I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

thanks pounce! the previous conversations did kind of talk about what im planning, the game would be similar to tony hawks skateboarding, and hopefully as popular. That game taught a lot of people about skating, and encouraged them to go out and try it, and in the same way i want my game to be educational, and fun, and get people into poi, as i see poi as a growing thing, people dont put poi down after they've picked them up.
thanks for the welcomes, its great to hear from people

Hiya. Welcome to HOP wave

*muddles feet trying not to sounds negative...but* Have done your quiz and honestly I think a poi computer game wouldn't be exciting enough to pull in people to make it profitable.
But one of those interactive arcade things that has something to hold onto might work?? Know what I mean?

as long as it would'nt be one of the 'keypad mashing' games, where you pull off moves which you can never do again. Its sounds really cool, and having it in the arcade is a great idea because more people will find out about poi and such, other wise the only people that would buy the game are people who do poi (and games consol freaks who have to have EVERY game on the market) keep up the good work! xx

Hey! Wizz, i can assure you im not ripping off your idea or anything. This project is simply a combination of work and play for me. I needed an idea for my dissertation, and figured i might as well spend my final year of uni working on something enjoyable.

My original plan was to motion capture myself doing poi at uni, and then import the animation files into a program which can link them together depending on which buttons are pressed. After doing some research, i found out that motion capture is too big a thing to be a small part of my project, and so my game will be very limited when i hand it in, in april. Im going to attempt to manually animate some moves, but i figured, if i make the design plan professional enough, i might be able to sell it, and myself, to a games company, who will have the resources to make the game i wish to see.

The controls are the hardest thing at the moment to work out, they need to be simple enough to allow the player to perform weaves, reverse weaves, butterflys, etc.. but have the abilty for more advanced moves like the buzzsaw, behind the back weaves, wraps and stalls. As well as having speed under the player's control, and body movement, turns and jumps.

Anyways, thankyou all for your interest, and kind words..
i'm always ready to listen to comments and criticism.
