i've been struggling with this question and this idea for about 3years now, and me being me all i ever get is other questions...like everything i suppose; the question is: did we kill our own honour? you know, did we destroy our own cultures need for the idea and the word? ...i do martial arts and meditate when i get the chance, but recently i have not been able to 'get into it'; playing with fire became the only way i could focus- now i cant even do that...the one word that stops me or keeps playing on me is honour and everything connected to it...am i being wierd here? or looking too deep? or am i one of the few minded people that can see what this lack of moral and ideal is doing to us...tell me what you think... confused

I have a very deep sense of honor. I am an honorable man. I keep my promises. I do not cheat, steal, lie, cover my errors, or intentionally hurt others or through inaction, allow them to come to harm.

I'm an Eagle Scout. I learned honor there and they turned me into the man I am now. I'm pissed at the organization about a few things, but the basic concept is a good one.

It's too bad that the only boys who stay with it are the ones who are natural leaders.

yes i know what you mean, so much of the worlds culture had been blown up, dug up, or sold that there seems to be nothing to replace the culture with, apart from fast food, quick fix evangalistic religions and the great god of consumerism.
look at chinas history, possibly one of the richest in the world and look at the cultural revolution and the waste that was laid to it, ancient monuments destroyed, the whole system ruined because of what was perceived as borgois.
and simple things, polite language, holding the door open for women, honour in small ways has gone which leads to the large...honour defecit???... that we now face.
Maybe you are looking too deep but i agree anyway.

Oooh, just discovered i am a raging feminist. Have an overwhelming urge to say that women can open doors themselves! ubbloco
Umm, honour is a hard one. I have honour if it is what lightning is talking about. Truth and decency are definately valued. But the 'honour above all else' that i have seen portrade seems pointless. Extreme example, but throwing acid in a girls face cause she refuses to marry you, multiple gang killings, standing by while your daughter is raped or killed cause she commited adultery thus tarnishing your percieved sence of honour. Its a word that loses its translation between cultures.
I know this is probably not what you meant, i just find it a strange concept.

I watched Last of the Samurai the other day and yes I know it's pretty much all wrong historically but it brings up a couple of interesting points. They valued their honour and killed themselves if they were shamed. There's a guy delivering kebabs around here because he was forced to leave his family in a different country because he killed his sister's husbands brother and that family is looking for revenge. It may not be true but events like this do occur just it's not widespread and hardly pervades most of our lives
Honour? Hell we live in an individualist society and if my sister killed someone it's so easy for me to disown her. Killing may be a harsh example. Just that things effect us more as individuals rather than as a family, this isn't true for the whole world of course but I hope you see where I'm going
I'm not very good at articulating myself and so if I can think of more of the points I wanted to make I'll come back to the thread

I can open doors for myself..... ubblol

Most of us are sheltered from what really happens in the world. When I think about it my mind goes into overload and I guess you sometimes have to look on that smaller scale at your own life

me prefers far more to act with honour than to talk of it.
honour is mitigated by pride - humble honour is selfless.
that said, i like to strive every i can that doesn't involve water fights.
In a supersoaker duel, your butt is mine, any way i can wink
