I think you have to view them as essentially different things altogether, not that one is necessarily better than the other. For me, I like practice Poi because I can do a lot more with them, the time is not restricted, I can have fun inside (which is a big deal in London!) and I know I'm not going to hurt myself too much. wink I can get into the “Zone” a lot more easily and develop my style more – I love being able to just flow with music and let my body express itself the way it wants to…With Fire, there's the sound itself (which is completely mesmerising), the added sense of danger, respect and accompanying adrenal response. It's a shorter and far more exhilarating experience granted, but not necessarily better. That’s how I feel anyway…what does everyone else think?

I agree completely with Carrey, they both have their own place and their own benefits - neither is better than the other, just different------------------Bovril - It's liquid cow y'know

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

not to be trashin fire, but people are usually more likely to let you spin at events if your using glowsticks, because they dont know yu well enough to trust you with fire in a public place. Just a Thought...

The beach is a public place isn't it? But yea, at parties you wouldn't use Fire because it's packed in and probably inside. I've never really thought of people using staff at a party, but then again, I've never been to one.Fire is different than glowie stuff. Glowie stuff stings (and occasionally leaves welts the size of a fork), Fire burns (which tells a whole new story in it's self). Like Carrey said Fire is dangerous but mesmorising like Glowsticks, but in a different sense because you don't get that whoosh sound, only a whish. (I guess? wink)Kinudin

Fire is a hassle, but it's so much easier to impress people. Glowsticks are better for the discerning performer who concentrates more on tricks (or is too lazy for fire). Most people aren't impressed by glowsticks AT ALL as far as I have seen, in my experience frownPlus you can't breath glowsticks. This alone is a turnoff for most people... I love my fire poi....but as mentioned above...it is a limited time to spin before they go out, so I made myself some light poi. Now these are no ordinary glowy things...these are super bright, and look damn flash when twirled...with the lights leaving a trail on your retina...think of mini light sabers from starwars being twirled and you will have some idea of the effect...it is just lights in plastic tube, but they are damn good!!! I think that technology is good, but I still love my fire for the primative reason that everyone loves fire!!!I think different situations call for different poi, which is why I have both!!!------------------fe fi foo fun

I've never had the feeling that glowsticks were alive. I feel the fire looking at me. I know the fire is older and wiser than I am. Fire is as close to God as man can stand.

One thing i love to do is.... no wait the court ordered me not to mention it.... BUT! another thing i like to do is twirl mixed fire / electroglow staves. It's the nicest n clearest way to show the audience staff swapping moves. I considered diff flame colour but decided to not to cop cancer.Twirly whirly!------------------"It takes a very special woman.... or several average ones"- Bill Hicks on the strain of stand up comedy

I confess to being a fire chauvinist. I used to really look down on glowstick twirling, until I tried it in the proper context--at a rave with UV lights everywhere, in a crowd of mixed twirlers, light staffs, laser lights; a huge sound system going BOOM-BOOM-BOOM, plenty of ice-cold beer, and a proper buzz.Maximus

:sigh: i myself am deficient in the fire twirling department because i have nonconsenting parents, but i can still impress the hell out of people with glowsticks, and in some cases i do actually like the look of glowsticksfirst off, you gotta get the rigth glowsticks, the little green six inch ones are ok, but i mean come on, they get so fricking boring after awhile, and thats one advantage about glowsticks, they have an incredible range of colors that are easily obtained, unlike fire. Glowsticks also i think leave better trails than fire to the naked eye, ecspecially in fog...glowsticking gives you acess to a wider range of people as you can do it at almost any event without fear of burning something down, thus you being able to show off your skills to more people (sorry thats a selfish one, but hey, im full of myself)oh and yeah, i have two words, high- intensity, those thing are incredible, they light up the whole room and are damn impressiveand ten inchers, those things are cool tooso yeah, there ya go...

There ya' go Flash fire... Way to remember the good old days... You go with your hippie, non-bathing, unemployed, tree hugging, pot smoking, two hours late for everything, leather wearing vegetarian, burning man-sellout, change begging, big business hating but cigarette smoking, left wing cuz it goes with your wardrobe, counterculture-cuz-you're-not-cool-enough-to-hang-with-the-popular-kids fire spinners...See kids... THAT'S how you start a fight. wink(You know I love you all...)By the way, I really love both my fire poi and my sauce lights. Someone once said "Apples and oranges". Oh yeah, that was me. smile

NYC: I love your fighting-talk style. Fire is hot, Glowsticks are not. Fire is dangerous, Glowsticks are not. What are audiences (being entertainment hungry and fickle) wanting? Do a fantastic trick with Glowsticks or do a mediocre trick with fire and they'll be impressed to the same degree.Fire appeals to our primeval (sp) fears so maybe, to impress our audiences more, we should try the same tricks but with poisonous snakes, spiders or sabretooth tigers.

Just ignore me. Everyone else does.

Lol, NYC you have hit it on the nail about this messy debate. I dunno about everyone else's neck of the woods, but the melbourne twirling scene is not without it's pretentious fux.Who cares what eveyone else thinks, glowsticks and fire kick total ass in a big way - and importantly, they kick ass in different ways. I found that aside from practice, the best thing for my twirling was the support and praise that others gave after each performance.Like with twirlers-jugglers, being adversarial about the difference between Fire and glow just unneccesarily creates division when there should be tree-hugging, alsation humping fun! This thread shoudl emphasis twirling as a fire AND glowies, not fire vs. glowies.Besides, all your belong to us!------------------I am not a bot.*** END STATEMENT ***
