Well, since so many people had their intro threads wiped out and are starting new ones, I figure I could use these events to start my own, ultra-untimely intro, seeing as how I've been around HoP for like 3 years.

So then:

Name: Vance

Alias: Van, Vanize, Add, Zaidou (my 'African' name) ... oh, and I almost forgot, Pixie Banger! (don't ask if you don't really want to know).

Age: 34 (35 now)

Location: Potchefstroom, South Africa (WSW of Jo'berg) presently. Grew up in Houston, Texas. Most of my Family lives in Austin, Texas. I'm moving to Berlin, Germany in January for 2 years. (ok, been in Berlin for a year now)

Favourite Toys: sailboats (been sailing 29 years), surfboards (been surfing 19 years), poi (3.5 years) (almost 5 years now)

Occupation: Reasearch scientist (Ph.D. in space physics)

Hobbies: Too many - sailing, surfing, poi, scale models, travelling, collecting stamps and paper money from places I visit, Dungeons & Dragons, SCUBA diving, tropical fish, reading, painting, drawing, getting projects ready for Burningman, ....

Your favourite website/s: www.burningman.com

Music: I'll listen to most anything except modern country music. My favorites are classical (e.g. vivaldi, beethoven), trance, classic rock (led zep, hendrix, beatles), and what used to be called alternative (foo fighters, pixies, whale, ...)

Movies: blade runner (director's cut), strictly ballroom, band of brothers (more like a mini series I guess), amelie, ... er, I know there are more, but I can't think of them just now.

Books: mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and history.

Philosophy: Technological Gaiaism, Quantum Fatalism

Favourite Colour: Burgandy ( sorry Alice!)

Favourite Quote/Saying:

From a movie: "Gentleman, we have a blind date with destiny, and she just ordered the lobster!" - the Shoveler (Mystery Men).

From literature: "The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they cease to love" - W. Somerset Maughn

From personal life: "I was just telling Sara K. that I have no particular segway between being stone cold sober and really wasted. Then she kicked her glass of water across the room..." - Zouwera (Christmas day, 2002, west africa)

So that is that. We'll see if it goes anywhere, eh?

i ubblove sunflowers

a friend of mine had her whole room filled with sunflowers when she was giving birth to her daughter

yeh, a couple of tons of sand and some water is a great idea, and a grassy spot over there -> for people like me who don't want sand getting everywhere.....

My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely smile

well, berlin does have these "beach bars" where you can go sit on the bank of the River Spree where someone has dumed a few tons of sand and build sand castles...

... I could bring along some sunflowers for good measure.

Would work for me, as long as they put all of their outdoor heaters right around us so we would be all nice and toasty warm. We wouldn't get sticky from the salt water either that way.

well, it is my last day of travel - right now I am on the greek isle of Mykanos. It is eirily quiet here actually. In a few hours it is time to take a plane back to Berlin. Frankly I'll be glad to get home, as the weather as been rainy rainy rainy till yesterday, and my travel partner and I are not getting along well. It has been a nice trip regardless - but could have been much better given better weather and company!

till tomorrow!

Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross
To see a fine lady upon a white horse
With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes
She shall have music wherever she goes

Ride a cock horse - English history origins
The lyrics of this nursery rhyme relate to Queen Elizabeth I of England (the fine lady) who travelled to Banbury (a town in England) to see the new huge stone cross which had just been erected.
The lyrics 'With rings on her fingers' obviously relates to the fine jewellery which would adorn a Queen. The words 'And bells on her toes' refers to the fashion of attaching bells to the end of the pointed toes of each shoe!
Banbury was situated at the top of a steep hill and in order to help carriages up the steep incline a white cock horse (a large stallion) was made available to help with this task. When the Queen's carriage attempted to go up the hill a wheel broke and the Queen chose to mount the cock horse to reach the Banbury cross.
Her visit was so important that the people of the town had  decorated the cock horse with ribbons and bells and provided minstrels to accompany her - "she shall have music wherever she goes".
The big cross at Banbury was later destroyed by anti - Catholics.

GRRRR.... I hate european locks!

I let the door to my flat accidently shut this morning and figured it was no big deal since I had enough clothes to go to work on and could just get the building superintendant to let me in - but no, he has no spare key for my particular apartment.

so now I have to spend the night at someone else's house, get a locksmith in the morning, wait all friggin day for him to show up, and then pay him a ridiculous amount of money (services like that are hanously expensive in germany).

blah!
