Well, since so many people had their intro threads wiped out and are starting new ones, I figure I could use these events to start my own, ultra-untimely intro, seeing as how I've been around HoP for like 3 years.
So then:
Name: Vance
Alias: Van, Vanize, Add, Zaidou (my 'African' name) ... oh, and I almost forgot, Pixie Banger! (don't ask if you don't really want to know).
Age: 34 (35 now)
Location: Potchefstroom, South Africa (WSW of Jo'berg) presently. Grew up in Houston, Texas. Most of my Family lives in Austin, Texas. I'm moving to Berlin, Germany in January for 2 years. (ok, been in Berlin for a year now)
Favourite Toys: sailboats (been sailing 29 years), surfboards (been surfing 19 years), poi (3.5 years) (almost 5 years now)
Occupation: Reasearch scientist (Ph.D. in space physics)
Hobbies: Too many - sailing, surfing, poi, scale models, travelling, collecting stamps and paper money from places I visit, Dungeons & Dragons, SCUBA diving, tropical fish, reading, painting, drawing, getting projects ready for Burningman, ....
Your favourite website/s: www.burningman.com
Music: I'll listen to most anything except modern country music. My favorites are classical (e.g. vivaldi, beethoven), trance, classic rock (led zep, hendrix, beatles), and what used to be called alternative (foo fighters, pixies, whale, ...)
Movies: blade runner (director's cut), strictly ballroom, band of brothers (more like a mini series I guess), amelie, ... er, I know there are more, but I can't think of them just now.
Books: mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and history.
Philosophy: Technological Gaiaism, Quantum Fatalism
Favourite Colour: Burgandy ( sorry Alice!)

well, my financial situation is currently such that it looks like I'll be in Berlin more or less all summer except for a brief jaunt to the fullmoon trancefest in mid july and a weekend trip to paris sometime soonish. so no more real vacations for me till september and my bank account has had a few paychecks to recover.
I'm dead broke because I just took all my savings and a bit extra and paid off my credit card and a student loan.
but I have a couple extra futons that are quite comfy and I love having guests, so please come to Berlin and give me something to do this summer!

last Xmas? He was just here at the end of May. I'm not sure how long he's been in the states, but he was in CA before heading down here, and now he's back there.

Next friday is Quebec's national holiday so the group of friends I'm with are planning to find a spot where we can burn stuff play music and get very drunk, you'd be welcome to join as we'd be happy to see people in Germany who can smile ;-)

sorry rowan - sort of hurting for money right now, as I stripped my entire saving and as much extra as my bank would float me out of my german account and sent it off to pay off one of my student loans back in the states, and It'll take me another month or two to get back to a point where I can afford things like airfare.
I agonized a lot over whether or not to do falmouth, but in the end I decided to pay it conservative.
and it was a pleasure to meet Soldari! we wound up seeing "pricilla, queen of the desert" at an outdoor theater after meeting in the park for some poi practice. That movie is fantastic! (never saw it before).

Ahh well, one day I will get to Berlin. I hear there is a good tango scene there? I have been listenning to some modern tango, learning a bit. It is almost as addictive as poi!

hmmm...
slight complication in that regard has cropped up, in the form of a highly compatable female - so it may take an extra year or two...
but, I am hoping I might get a chance to visit australia, maybe next january or february.
but I have to sort a new job and figure out when that hypothetical position might start before I can make any plans.

well, I've been agonizing about the falmouth thing, even since I said I wasn't coming. But really it looks like I can't. I have to save my remaining vacation time (plus I'm low on funds right now too), which means I can only pop over for the weekend, and flights are now expensive enough and total travel time to falmouth so long, that it really isn't worth it to show up dead tired, ultra late on friday, and then turn around and spend all day sunday travelling back. One day of falmouth fun is not worth a few hundred euros and 2 days of travel despite how lovely all of you are to hang out with.
