Well, as my original intro was lost, I guess I get the chance to redo my room!!! Feel free to come on in, just PLEASE take your shoes off at the door! Thank you. smile

Well here's me (again)... biggrin

*NAME- Amanda

*SEX- female

*AGE- 23

*LOCATION- Hmmm... a tricky one! Currently in Durham. I spend my summers in France (miles from civilization), and spring and autumn in Wales (do sheep count as civilization? If so, then a thriving community!) ubblol

*FAV. TOYS- at the moment my fire poi, but also my juggling balls, diabolo, my new staff, guitar, mountain bike, and of course my beloved kayak!...too many more to mention!

*TWIRLING SINCE- learned bits of stuff since 2000, but only really got into it this year. I was on crutches for 3wks, after dislocating my knee (ow!), so I spent all the time learning new poi stuff (every cloud has a silver lining eh?).

*OCCUPATION- Outdoor Activity Instructor/ river guide

*HOBBIES- naturally my poi and stuff, but also do lots of kayaking, canoeing, climbing, mountain biking, snowboarding, and bits of other sports.

*FAV. PLACE- Specific favourite one is sat on the edge of the cliff, overlooking the gorge where I work in France, with nothing around for miles apart from the wild boar, and watching either the sunset in the distance, or one of the impressive lightning storms we have.

I also love anywhere where I can sit on a mountain or beside a river, hearing nothing but the noises of nature. A BIG reminder of the beauty of it all... ubblove

Anyway, thats pretty much me in a nutshell! Feel free to come and chill in my room- its a great place for relaxing and being at one with nature! (and who said i was a hippie?! peace ). On the plus side, tea and cakes are supplied for free!!! And if i'm feeling generous i may even let Narr in with her weird marmite/chocolate spread mix! euch!

Catch you all soon, wave

Mand.

Well what an exciting day I had yesterday. I'll try and condense it down into a fairly short account.

The plumber came to our apartment to fix a leak in one of the pipes in the bathroom- something he had to use a blowtorch inside the wall for (which straight away made me nervous).

He set fire to a small bit of the wall once, and his buddy put it out. By this time I was pacing up and down the hallway, not liking what was happening. Then all of a sudden the smoke alarm was going off, there was black smoke pouring out the wall, and the plumber was screaming for a fire extinguisher.

We managed to put the fire out, and the plumber checked the surrounding insulation, but we weren't 100% sure that nothing was still quietly smouldering. I know exactly how dangerous insulation can be for smouldering quietly out of sight, and starting up again days or weeks later.

I called the building manager to let him know what had happened. He told me that the insulation was old and the building was like a tinderbox, and could I please call the fire dept immediately.

So I found the non-emergency number, told them what had happened and that I was almost 100% sure nothing was still smouldering, but asked if they could send someone round to double check on it.

She said no problem.... and asked where the nearest stairwell is, and if I can make it there safely. I laughed and said "well of course I can, there's no fire, and not even any smoke anymore". She then gave me the talk of "close all doors and windows, evacuate the building, don't use the elevator, etc".

I didn't have time to explain again about the whole lack of fire, cos I could already hear sirens, so I just thanked her and left.

I did take the stairs, but only because it's quicker than our elevator. When I got to the bottom I didn't know whether to laugh or be horrified.

Parked outside were 2 fire trucks, an ambulance, and a police van. There were 5 fire fighters, all in full breathing apparatus, trying to gain entrance to the building.

I let them in and they were in full emergency mode. There was questions, shouting, directions, talking into radios, and needing the locations of stairwells. It took a short while in all the panic for me to convince them that there was no actual fire and it was perfectly safe to use the elevator.

There was this poor guy in the elevator, with his chihuahua in his arms, who suddenly found himself crushed into the corner as 5 fire fighters in full breathing apparatus ran in there with him, followed by a very confused/ amused me.

They all piled into our apartment where, in a very anticlimatic finish, the lead guy (breathing aparatus now removed) stuck his head in the hole, put his hand on the wall, and said "nah, the fire's out"

WELL I COULD'VE TOLD HIM THAT! Infact I had been telling him that all the way up here!

What I needed them for was to check for hotspots of smouldering insulation that we can't see. The only way to check that is by using a thermal imaging detector (TID). And yes I do know this for certain, because I was told it by Houston fire dept when the ceiling insulation in Kim's old place was smouldering.

So now I'm left with lots of stinky, burnt insulation, and we just have to hope that nothing is still quietly smouldering away in there.

Yeah, our apartment manager just came over to find out what the hell happened yesterday, and she's (hmmmmm, how can I say it on a PG board?)... not very happy.

She said she's getting in touch with the fire chief, and asking him to come and check out the insulation. Firstly to check for hidden smouldering spots, and secondly to officially say that the degraded insulation is a fire hazard.
So I guess I'm playing host to more of Calgary's fire department. Damn they'd better send me a cute one this time- I was definitely not impressed with the cuteness factor of the last lot!

No, I work in white water so I'm more than used to both of those. It's the alien things beneath the surface. *shudder*
You know, you're happily bobbing about and something slimy brushes past your leg. It's not knowing what's under the surface, and not knowing where things are, and suddenly having things wrapping round your legs.

That said, I do really want to learn how to surf, so I'm in a bit of a quandry.

Ry- thank you. I had to take a break from making them, as I lost the end off the airbrush and it took forever to get a replacement delivered. I do have 2 more that are completed, and a few more ready to paint when I get back to Canada. I'll put some photos up soon.

EVERYTHING!
Seaweed, sharks, jellyfish, ordinary fish, alien type things, and creatures of the deep. And not being able to distinguish between ANY of them.

Gah, logging onto HoP is making me cringe today with the thought of it all! eek

WOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

I JUST PASSED MY DRIVING TEST!!!!!

That's the main reason why I'm in the UK at the moment. My aim was to pass before Christmas, but figured the schedule was a bit tight!
I've been having lessons for the past 3 weeks, and really didn't know how I would do today. I had a mock test on Friday and passed it, but with 15 minor faults (the maximum allowed). Today I passed with just 2 minor faults!

Yay!!!
