When I am doing fire poi you can barley see the fire and it goes out every couple minutes. What am I doing wrong??

gonna need more information to answer that one i'm afraid.
a good start would be to describe your fire poi for us and tell us what fuel you're using...

If you can, take off the kevlar and add some demmin or towle underneath it, then blot the kevlar back on over the new material.
It should hold more fuel and therefor burn longer

erm kevlar wicking gives this weak-as blue flame when you twirl after a soak in an alocohol based fuel like metho. waste of money.
kero should give 3-5 minutes as a very general guesstimate.
I do not have any data on depleted uranium....

okay, I am new at this so you all don't need to be such smart asses. The only fuel I have been using is lamp oil becuase someone told me to use that. I didn't know if a different fuel would work better or if I should soak them for a certain amount of time or what. And no I'm not doing in the rain or during the day.

yes, when you initally light up the poi wicking, it does catch on fire, but to ensure that it has the best chance to stay lit, try to leave it burning on it's own without twirling it. Do this until the entire poi head is engulfed and is giving off a respectable amount of heat. For thinly wicked firetoys, this is the only hope!
also, try not to have your hand or the chain above the poi head when 'warming up' the poi head, as this may be too hot for your hands and soot up your chains.

If I were u I'd get some paraffin (I think it's called kerosene in America?).
If the flames still small/going out then you probably need bigger wicks.
Rule with wicks is that the bigger the surface area the bigger the flame, and the bigger the volume of wick the more fuel they hold therefore the longer the burn.
You should also ensure that on extinguishing the wicks you immediately soak them in paraffin- this stops the wick material smouldering and will make them last longer.

I know you are new to this, but what would be useful is to find out what your wicks are made from (it might not the kevalr everyone is assuming they are made from).
If you made them yourelf, could you tell us how much wick you put on them. If you bought them, could you tell us where youbought them and their exact product name. we may be able to compare with other people who have simialr items.
Until we have arough idea of what equipment you are using, its very hard to establish anything...
(PS lamp oil should be a good fuel, so I'm guessing its something other than that)

I have later learned that it is best to leave the poi in your fuel for at least 5-10 minutes for the first time you use it as the wick is quite slow in soaking up the fuel. Try leaving your wicks in the fuel for 10 minutes and then let us know how you get on.

Thanks to all who replied. Ihave learned to let them soak more and let them stay on fire longer (as big dave said I should)before I start twirling and it has helped. The fire poi I have are not very thick also, so I think that the next pair I buy I'll get some thicker ones.
