Ok, so now that i know Dawn wants to do some sort of gathering for HOP day i figured i'd start up a thread for us to make plans... and lets hope the fire ban is lifted... So... where do you guys wanna do this?

Yeah, sure, if it's a Sunday, which I think it is, I'll be no problem for me. But then again, I am always subject to getting volun-told to do something at the last minute >.<'

As for where? The commons? Oh, wait, we need electricity, don't we?

... Actually, the stage were we normally go with the wave is in tact, and open to the public. Anyone wanna freeze their asses down there?

We don't really need electricity since my stereo has batteries, but if we wanted to use mine and dawn's "cold fire" lamps then we'd need an outlet. Then again, there's plugs on the outside of the Pavilion, so I'm all up for the commons.
Actually, I've been scheming something for a while. HOP day is the perfect setting! See, poi is sperading like a freaking plague here, though unfortunately I've noticed that the majority of new spinners basically care nothing about technique and all they wanna do is light sh*t on fire. Now, if some just wants to burn things that's there deal, but what I reeeeeally want to do is teach people proper fire safety. Show them how to build safe fire heads, chains and other equipment as well as the stuff you need to be safe etc etc. I was kinda thinking of making a gathering someting like a "live version" of Home of Poi, for those who haven't had the chance or taken the time to thouroughly check out the site. Not that it would just be safety lectures, since that's not all this is about. We could share experience, trade tricks and techniques with others.
And have s'mores!

Definately, but i don't want to make hop day into a organized preformance... I'm going to make my double wicks before that day aswell. I started this thread so i'm gonna take it into my hands to say.. ahem... although this is Home of Poi day it is not strictly poi... All busker related preformance arts are encouraged and anything else you wanna bring, music... gee-tar... bongos... go ahead... but we gotta set a location...

Not me, unfortunately... And more bad news from me... Erm, long story short, I've been grounded for a month. No poi, no friends, no Hallowe'en. Nothing other than school, and what my parents pay for. So, I've screwed myself over.

But still, you guys should figure something out! At least you all could have fun I'll do some spinning on my own on the 26th, I suppose...

Yeah, about what Ivan was saying, I contacted the city the other day with some questions about the ban and such, and they just emailed me back saying they forwarded my letter to the fire department. I worried!>.<
The only by-law I found on their website about fire was about an open air fire ban that's been in effect since May 6th.

I've booked the day off work. I'm going to go out on a limb and say we are inviting people who want to learn to this thing... Shall i inform the people from my school? The one's who are discussed in the "Does this bother you" thread.

did we rule out the halifax waterfront?

i think if this year works out*knocks on wood*
we should do the whole 9 yards next year with advertising and everything.

My only concerns with the waterfront are that it's helluvalot colder there then pretty much anywhere else in the city, plus it's dirty and smelly!>.< I think if we're expecting a big group it should be a place with lots of space so people can sit and spin comfortably. So far, I'm hoping for Halifax commons, but maybe I'm just being biased since I live like, two minutes from there.
I got two e-mails in my inbox today, however both were asking me for my phone number so they could talk to me personaly. I don't know whether I should be happy because they're doing a good job to inform me directly or worried that they'll slap a fine on me for fire spinning so long!
If we want, we could do some makeshift advertising this year, I don't see how it would hurt. There could be a lone spinner out there somewhere that none of us knows personaly!

I would be up for the halifax commons. The thing i don't like to much about the libary is that there's a bunch of dirty punks that hang around there around then. Plus i think theres more of a chance we'd get in trouble in front of the libary in comparison to the common.

DarkDevil as a suggestion which might not be possible right away, but for next year. . . aquire a burning permit for your Fire Spinning group. . .keeps the cops off of you--especially if you have a set place (like in a park) where you'll set up all the time. . .

We've had to do that over in BC cause of troubles with the police being a pain. . .

Actually, I've done some research on this and there's only a temporary fire ban and the city will be contacting me shortly with the details on when it will be over. Ordinarily, one doesn't need a permit at all to busk with fire here in good old Hali, but because the huricane left so much dead wood and stuff on the streets they're deeming it unsafe to have open air fires. Normally the cops just stroll by and make some comment like "are you guys as good as ash circle yet?"

Deimo's is right... we usually don't have problems. Even during the fireban, me, deimos, blaize and cerberus spun for a few hours at grand parade... no troubles.. the troubles came when Rick and Ivan did a big show down by Victoria Park... the cops protrol there alot more often. Strange though.. we were right infront of town hall.

Anyway.. as for actually getting a permit.. I'm moving to Newfoundland next summer for University (yup, sorry Halifax spinners.. i've only got 9 more months with you all...) So once i move there i'm going to look into getting a fire permit for myself.
