ok, so whilst installing the lastes quicktime patch, i cam across a problem, telling me i had no permission to write to /library/packages/

sometimes i just get round this kinda thing by doing the operation as root, so i logged out...

instead of the loginwindow i got BSD looking through the system.log i find:

Loginwindow[185]: Login Autherisation failed (-60008)!
Loginwindow[185]: AutherisationRef doesn't have a username ()

after a bit of research (luckily meg had lent me her laptop this very evening ) i decided that it was a problem with netinfo, and so i removed local.nidb. wich should have put the computer back to the intial configuration so i just re-enter my user details.... no

now it stopped dropping down into console, just left a blue screen. I followed the instructions here but with no change, going back through my system log i see that now loginwindow is calling settupassistent (probibly to try and set up the user info again) wich is crashing

Loginwindow[266]: [Login.m:2200] Failed to launch /system/library/coreservices/Setup Assistant.app/contents/macos/setup assistant (error 11)

i know its probibly backup and wipe time, but i would prefer to fix it, any ideas?
